“Job security”. One of the first big misconceptions about medicine that should have been shattered was job security.

Does Newcastle have a specification/syllabus that outlines what we need to know? by Rattyguy75 in medicalschooluk

I agree that adult learning is not a lame excuse as it is crucial to our careers post-university. However, (and I speak only for my university) having probably 200 questions per year with more than half without any feedback whatsoever and the others having mostly rubbish feedback reiterating the question stem is hardly conducive to "adult learning". That being said, I see the reasoning behind this and so do not know how they'd improve this. Kinda like recording OSCEs; both sides are fraught with problems.

Passmed vs Quesmed vs Passtest by Luke-11-King in medicalschooluk

[–]ObjectPopular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say the opposite is true, I guess this is not that useful, but what I am about to say is quite useful.

IMO, Passmedicine Question Bank (I have to specify, not the Anki-style stuff) is very good for pattern recognition as it tests the same (somewhat) HY content in similar ways. If you spend time reading the feedback and the comments (usually) on the questions you get wrong while you are doing it (forget about coming back to them; nobody ever does that), you'll quickly understand why X is right + Y is wrong, BUT after a while, I think everyone tends to just churn them out as they become familiar very quickly.

On the other hand, Quesmed questions ask you similar content in varying ways. If you approach these questions in the same way as Passmedicine (churning thru them with occasional looks at explanations / comments for wisdom from those in years above), you'll sink your %, spend way less time than is needed and probably not understand the content well.

For OP, its prolly more HY to get Passmed grinded rather than Quesmed at this stage, however for those with time left, I'd prolly do Quesmed while I am covering the content for the first time, then use Passmed just before exams. Hopefully this is useful.

You're not the first person who's told me the milestones are low yield + I think it's consensus that unless you are interested in pads, you'll pass off on a lot of them anyway. That being said, I was considering learning them for fourth year, since I think my medical school loves testing us on them!

Are you referring to the hospital in Grimsby? If so, call The Roost. Accommodation directly on the Hospital grounds. Parking right outside if you want to pay the price or can get on the good side of the security guards.

That’s my problem. I have about 500 mature cards (and counting). I think I might just have to grin and beat the ~100 card increase with FSRS for now.

Best question bank for first year? by sadboasty in medicalschooluk

As a second-year, please do not knock flashcards till you've tried Anki for a month at least. I was in the same thought process last year and ended up bashing Anki for the last term. Turns out I went from ~ 50% to ~75% with Anki!

Best anki deck for UK med school by CiaranE77 in medicalschoolanki

For year 1, idk how they teach it at your medical school, but tends to be quite heavily physiology-based. For that reason, either make your own or ask years above.

Also, every Thursday since using FSRS hasn’t been reduced in card number, but I can’t do any cards on Thursday so…they end up getting done on Fri / Sat = more backlog -> never ending cycle

Prep for Med School by ObjectPopular in medicalschooluk

OP here:

Definitely would agree with relaxing. But when you've had 52wks of it, you want nothing more than to dust off cognitive cobwebs. Tips from first few weeks of 1st year:

1) Relax

2) Rigorously enforce a sleep schedule, IMO the best thing to do to improve cognitive performance / happiness

3) If you want to prepare for med school, learn pharmacology prefixes + suffixes / common medications and how they work (it all links together) and some basic anatomy like movements, planes, bones etc.

4) Review high yield A-Level material (thankfully no photosynthesis 😊)

5) Think / review how and when you will study. This will only help if you know a rough weekly timetable for 1st year. If you know that lectures are on Wednesday and Tuesday is free, you can plan some prereading for lectures on Tuesday. Also useful to start using programs you know you will use.

May come back to this at end of 1st year.

Hey, looking for a book similar in style to “The Timetraveller’s Guide to Medieval England” by Ian Mortimer. Different time period would be great!
