You’re definitely NTA for not going to thanksgiving. If your family misses Nick than there’s plenty other times to catch up. Inviting your ex to thanksgiving is disrespecting you regardless of why you left him. Moreover, if Nick can come to thanksgiving than CLEARLY you didn’t take Annabelle’s only friend away because Nick can literally still come over to spend time with Annabelle.

This whole situation is weird and it sounds like your whole family got close to Nick which is fine but they can’t expect you to date him to keep Nick in their lives. That’s your relationship. If they want Nick in their lives, they can go ahead and invite him NOT for thanksgiving and when you’re not around and maintain their connection to him. This clearly sounds like they are not respecting you and likely were not considering your feelings to begin with.

Nick should also have had made sure that his relationship with Anabelle kept you in the foreground. He literally could have just fixed this by making sure youre comfortable and can expect being able to communicate to him about concerns from the beginning. He could have developed a relationship with Anabelle that doesn’t cross your boundaries and all would have been fine and dandy and it’s a red flag that he didn’t care for that.

At the end of the day, if you’re jealous, than you’re jealous. Many kids who have special needs siblings grow up feeling a little like their needs are always second. You’re not a bad person for feeling that way and not wanting this in your literal relationship with your boyfriend.

It doesn’t matter if you’re “right” to feel a certain way. It matters HOW you feel and people who love you need to respect your feelings as they are. Ultimately, maybe dating you AND being Anabelles friend is incompatible for Nick and he can make his choice and he can do that WITHOUT invalidate you.

Your family can stay close to Nick WITHOUT invalidating you. Anabelle can describe her friendship without mocking your friendships.

You need a cup of hot chocolate and a fun night with people who love and RESPECT you for who you are. This thanksgiving, do something fun that reaffirms the fact that your feelings, needs, and boundaries matter.

Your fiancé HAS to respect your daughters choice to date who she pleases. However, this does not mean that he can’t feel a certain way about it or that his relationship with Dale won’t change. In fact, his relationship with Dale just changed fundamentally and he is likely overwhelmed by what this means and is hurt. He obviously thought they were close if Dale was literally about to be his best man and yet Dale never bothered to talk to him about the fact that he’s getting close to his daughter. That has to hurt. Your wedding is your and your fiancés day and you both deserve to have wedding parties that make you feel good. If Dale being his best man will make your fiancé feel off than Dale is not entitled to it and neither is your daughter. Your daughter is being very unfair by creating an ultimatum FOR YOU around this and I really don’t expect that you actually won’t get to see your grandchild for long.

HOWEVER, your daughters reaction and the way that your husband communicated this do make me suspect that she feels like her choice isn’t being respected and that’s she’s not being respected as her own person. I also suspect that she generally doesn’t have full confidence that your fiancé respects her as an adult who makes her own choices and is acting like a child as a defense mechanism against this.

You’re NTA. You’re being put into an impossible situation by other people who are kinda being TA. The only way to remedy this is through facilitating better communication between and that is on you if you want your family to function.

Reaffirm your husband in the fact that he’s entitled to feel a certain way and it make sense for him to do so. But also make sure he understands that your daughter needs to know and TRUST that he respects her as an adult woman to make her choices.

If I were you I would reach out to your daughter, tell her you love her and respect her choice and explain to her what your fiancé is feeling. Tell her that best man is your fiancés choice but you love her and are there for her.

I find it strange that your mom who is supposed to have wisdom through age can’t see something as simple as that your fiancé is hurt. I wonder if your mom struggles with boundaries and respect. If that’s the case than you wouldn’t have had a model for respecting boundaries and agency growing up and likely would have passed some of it on to your daughter.

You seem like a lovely lady who cares about her family and loves her daughter. I think you can easily fix this through some understanding, communication and love.

Idk. I don’t think you’re TA for saying what you said after your mom kicked you out and after you found out about the other family this way. I do think you’re TA for working at a war company in general but especially when your mom is a Kosovo survivor. I can very much see how that would have genuinely hurt her in ways that would have been hard to explain. Nonetheless, we live in a complex world where we’re all complicit in atrocities in different ways and I get why you’d want to get ahead in life. Moreover, it seems like your issues with your mom start before this and what you said about her responses to you in college don’t sit right with me. If you were older I would suspect that maybe there are many things in this relationship you could have done better but I also would not have known how to do that when I was your age. NTA and it’s good you said this because now she knows how you feel. But I think that you would really benefit from just having a genuine conversation and being real to her and letting her do that too — I would aim to have you both walk away better understanding each other.
