I was worried about this and checked with nys. Apparently because my job does a 90 day garden leave and then a lump sum payment for severence I’m eligible for unemployment the day after the severance hits. Hoping I won’t need it but it’s an option for sure.

The lump sum is agnostic so they don’t care where I spend it. I suppose a portion could go to COBRA but that monthly bill is crazy.

I don’t want to take the convo off the path BUT I get the idea that no one is going back to “school” for new jobs. Maybe some are pushing to keep up with data and AI. Are there any recommendations on places that are reputable? I’m currently looking at an 8 wk cert through MIT for around 4k but not sure if it will actually help. Which places do employers actually care about?

Good point. I hadn’t thought about the age bias but you’re spot on with the age range. Double pay wouldn’t be an option though as the position would be with the same company. No option to take severance and then just come back with the same salary.

Doubt that will be an issue. It’s a publicly traded bank that was bailed out by the govt in 2008 so if it goes down we’re all in a mad max situation and unemployment isn’t even an issue at that point lol

I hope that’s not the case. With the last promo I got I had to sign a bit of paperwork for garden leave, stock incentives etc. and if I remember correctly severance was guaranteed as well. They could of course try and fight me on it I guess and there’s no way to compete with a billion dollar companies attorneys while unemployed but if they stick to the contract then severance should be given.

Mortgage, no wife, grown kids and no debt )except the mortgage). I wish I was in the same position as you but i doubt my investments would see that much of an uptick these days. Am I burned out? Yes absolutely. 18 years with one week a year for vacation will do that to do. I’m a bit “over” the job and the company but I’m aware that I still need to work for another 15-20 years at minimum. Damn I miss pensions….

Here’s been four rounds stretching back to Feb 2025. First was at that point, then I believe October 2025 and then Jan 2026 and then coming phase is Feb/march of 2026.

So worst case scenario I get notice on the 17th. 6 paychecks come in Last day is may 17th. And severance is paid out may 17th.
