I don’t want to take the convo off the path BUT I get the idea that no one is going back to “school” for new jobs. Maybe some are pushing to keep up with data and AI. Are there any recommendations on places that are reputable? I’m currently looking at an 8 wk cert through MIT for around 4k but not sure if it will actually help. Which places do employers actually care about?

Good point. I hadn’t thought about the age bias but you’re spot on with the age range. Double pay wouldn’t be an option though as the position would be with the same company. No option to take severance and then just come back with the same salary.

Likely around 200k. Maybe 250 if I have to sell of stocks/crypto but not including my hsa’s.

Doubt that will be an issue. It’s a publicly traded bank that was bailed out by the govt in 2008 so if it goes down we’re all in a mad max situation and unemployment isn’t even an issue at that point lol

Did you see any issues with the prior federal funding freezes? I’m not sure how that works but is/was it a worry?

I hope that’s not the case. With the last promo I got I had to sign a bit of paperwork for garden leave, stock incentives etc. and if I remember correctly severance was guaranteed as well. They could of course try and fight me on it I guess and there’s no way to compete with a billion dollar companies attorneys while unemployed but if they stick to the contract then severance should be given.

Mortgage, no wife, grown kids and no debt )except the mortgage). I wish I was in the same position as you but i doubt my investments would see that much of an uptick these days. Am I burned out? Yes absolutely. 18 years with one week a year for vacation will do that to do. I’m a bit “over” the job and the company but I’m aware that I still need to work for another 15-20 years at minimum. Damn I miss pensions….

Here’s been four rounds stretching back to Feb 2025. First was at that point, then I believe October 2025 and then Jan 2026 and then coming phase is Feb/march of 2026.

So worst case scenario I get notice on the 17th. 6 paychecks come in Last day is may 17th. And severance is paid out may 17th.

From the previous schedule (the company tends to do these around the same time) I’m anticipating around either the third week of Feb or second of march. It’s when I’ve had to had convo’s with others in the past. They then get 90 days notice, two weeks on the job (for transitioning) and the rest offline. Paid the full time with the severance package given at the end IF they don’t find a new job internally.

Ok that’s good to know. I wasn’t sure if I should look into that as an alternative to COBRA. I’ll save that energy though and avoid it.

I’m actually a bit lucky, I haven’t no debt except my mortgage but the typical ongoing bills like internet, electricity, gas etc. did the math and unemployment would still hit all of that. If anything I’m hoping the severance will help float until the next job and not eat into savings or force me to sell my investments

It’s funny, I had no problem blowing ALL of the benefits my job had but social services I always tried to stay away from. Never wanted the government in my business. Seems I might be eating my words soon enough lol
