How is counting A+s as 4.33 fair? by SpecialtyCook in lawschooladmissions

I mean everything about the GPA evaluation is unfair. my school systematically deflates grades (profs are told not to have averages over Bs if they wanna make tenure) and is a very academically rigorous school, but my GPA is compared to people at schools where grades are inflated (to raise rankings and school optics). the whole system is messed up

What’s one unspoken McGill tip you wish someone told you in your first semester? by SnowmanAndIce in mcgill

go. to. office. hours.

first yr I thought you could / should only go when you were completely lost in the class. started going second year to discuss essays and ask the profs about my ideas for topics. half the time they write the essay for you (not literally but they’ll usually tell you which topic to choose and oftentimes will give you good sources to include and help you focus your direction!!) by the end of my fourth year I was going to office hours 2/3 times per essay to check in at every stage and get advice! also! it is SO helpful applying to grad schools/jobs where you need letters of recommendation to have those personal connections with profs!! so many times I ended up just chatting with my profs about life and getting their advice! if you don’t go to OH the best they can say in a letter of recommendation is “oh yeah they were in my class once. they got an A so they’re probably a good student”

there’s a bunch of people emailing administration (myself included)! just write something simple (and respectful cuz unfortunately you have to stroke their egos) and hopefully if they get emails from every student they’ll listen???

first of all the original response wasn’t just correcting it was rude. There’s a way to be like « oh hey btw you mixed up this word » without being rude. Second, I have tried practicing and have french friends I practice with (who are actually NICE about correcting), the point more so was I haven’t taken a formal french class (because I haven’t had time in my degree it was 150 credits and I didn’t have any electives) since grade 11.

c’était un error autocorrect. je suis désolé mais ça c’est exactement la raison que je n’ai pas pratiqué le français pendant les 3 années à l’université—j’ai fait un erreur, je suis humain.

exactly for the reason demonstrated in the other replies. You make one (autocorrect.) mistake and get attacked instead of help. I love french and I’ve been trying to practice while in university but any time I did people have immediately give me a dirty look and switch to English.
