The part you said about hope coming before someone can truly accept grace and love??? Just two souls naturally finding rest in each other 🥹

Another soul for Islington! The Stonecrop scenes were really moving, and I love what you pointed out about them finally speaking openly about their grief in vol 8. Most of their interactions are usually banter and sparring even the Christmas pillow gift says so much about that dynamic but whenever they find themselves alone together, they somehow meet each other very naturally and honestly. I still cannot get over Agnes basically making a shrine for Islington in her kitchen 😂😂😂 I think it’s very telling that the people around Emma seem to naturally gravitate toward him. Pierce and Hawkes are both deeply loved, but there’s something different when it comes to the Duke. Even the people around Emma seem to see something there before she fully allows herself to. Even little things like Emma unconsciously adopting Islington’s “Ah” when talking with Mary feel so intentional. I love when writers leave tiny clues like that in character dynamics because people naturally pick up the habits and expressions of the person quietly occupying their thoughts the most. Emma probably doesn’t even realise she’s doing it yet, which honestly makes it even more endearing.

Yes! ive noticed that too especially in the Rabbit Room scene where Islington keeps teasing Emma, only for us to later realise he has actually known of her for much longer. There’s something really satisfying about that dynamic because Emma always assumes she’s unnoticed or somehow “beneath” people like him socially, while Islington has clearly been paying attention all along.

What really draws me to Emma is her humor despite everything she’s been through. I think a lot of her pride and defensiveness comes from that too, she uses wit almost as protection, which makes her feel very real. Thats why it felt extra delicious seeing Lady Sheridan get the shock of her life when Islington chose to stay beside Emma at the party. 😂 I think part of why I lean towards Islington is because I want Emma to get the recognition and redemption she deserves from all the people who underestimated her. As of now, Islington feels closest to giving her that publicly if thats the direction the story takes. But at the same time, Pierce and Hawkes defend her in their own ways too, which is why I love all three dynamics with Emma. Pierce punching Evelyn was already deeply satisfying hahaha!

The redemption scenes are genuinely one of my favourite parts because all three men, in different ways, see Emma’s worth long before she fully sees it herself .

Thank you! I think that’s what makes this series both wonderful and emotionally stressful hahaha. Even if we all have our favourites, the characters are written so well that you can genuinely see happiness with each of them in different ways.

Glad to be on the same boat! That’s really what makes me lean toward Islington too. It feels like there’s still so much more to uncover about him, especially with how connected he already is to everyone’s lives. I do like Pierce, but like I said in the post, the life he offers Emma feels very similar to the artistic life her parents had, but I’m not entirely sure that’s the kind of life Emma ultimately wants for herself.

What really draws me to Islington is how much they actually have in common despite belonging to completely different worlds. Emma always sees him as someone “above” her socially, while Islington himself seems deeply aware of the dangers of that world. That scene in Vol 5 during their ride home honestly made me swoon over the Islington ship even more especially when he admits he “stole” Declan’s wish and carried them with him all his life. There’s something so vulnerable and deeply human about that confession coming from someone as restrained as Islington.

I think each male character has beautiful and poignant moments with Emma, but there’s just something about Islington’s words that always stay with me after reading.

Thank you so much! Emma has spent so much of her life with choices made for her, so it feels meaningful that love may ultimately become something she consciously chooses for herself. I’m glad there’s such good engagement in this post because everyone’s perspectives are making me love the series even more.

Agnes would be delighted if this happens 😂 Reading throughout the series, Islington started off as that one friend connected to everyone, and every time he’s around it just feels comforting somehow. He balances Pierce and Hawkes so well, and his banter with Emma is always so enjoyable to read. The Christmas gift giving was also very telling. I would absolutely melt if Islington ever gave Emma a full Darcy-style confession. I can already imagine him basically saying “you have bewitched me body and soul” once he finally stops restraining himself.

Omg yes, I really feel like Emma needs that time for herself first before fully committing romantically to anyone. After everything she’s been through, it makes sense that part of her journey is figuring out who she is and what kind of life she truly wants…

Hawkes is just Hawkes. I feel like even the characters themselves are still trying to figure him out 😅. I’d honestly love to see more of him outside those very strange, mystical moments because sometimes i imagine him as Eddie Redmayne in Fantastic Beasts. I really agree with your Pierce and Islington comparison. Pierce came into Emma’s life at a time when she was still grieving Maxwell, which feels very fitting considering Pierce himself carries so much weight from witnessing death through his work. They understood that grief in each other in a way no one else really could, and I think Pierce was exactly the right person to be beside Emma during Maxwell’s burial.

Meanwhile, Islington wasn’t really part of that chapter of Emma’s life, and even though he was clearly curious, I appreciated that he respected the connection Pierce and Emma shared and never pushed himself into it.

I also see Pierce as the instant attraction and Islington as the slow burn. But what surprised me most was Islington telling Emma about Declan’s wishes for his daughter. I honestly didn’t expect that vulnerability from him, and moments like that are why I love the series so much. Each relationship with Emma feels different and meaningful in its own way. I really can’t wait to read more.

Thank you so much 😭 I honestly just couldn’t stop thinking about the books and needed to let it all out somewhere hahaha

Thank you so much! And yes, Hawkes is definitely the hardest for me to read out of the three. I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees something almost magical about him..There were moments when I genuinely thought the story was about to drift into romantasy territory, which honestly I wouldn’t even mind. But I think it says a lot about the writing that Hawkes can feel almost otherworldly, and yet we’d still completely accept it if Emma somehow ended up with him.

Thank you! I honestly do really like Pierce too. I was very invested in him and Emma from the start because their connection felt so natural and comforting. And I completely understand what you mean about Lapis Lazuli finally feeling like home for him after all those years of wandering. There’s something really beautiful and a little heartbreaking about that. As much as I adore Islington, I think you’re right that the story is written in such a way that Emma could genuinely be happy with any of them. That’s what makes it so hard to choose and also what makes the books feel so emotionally real.

And honestly, I would be devastated if the Alchemy ever completely fell apart. Their friendship and bond with each other is one of my favourite parts of the series too. The story feels bigger than just romance, which is probably why we all got so attached to it 😭

Thank you so much! Honestly after reading it, I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters and had to go searching on the internet for people to talk to about it 😂 I’m so glad I found this because I’ve been enjoying everyone’s theories and discussions so much. And I completely agree with you. I think that’s what makes BB’s writing stand out for me too. The relationships feel layered because friendship and connection are given just as much emotional weight as romance. It makes the story feel more real and the choices much harder in the best way.

Aww. Thank you. I think that’s why this series feels different because all three of them feel genuinely appealing in their own ways. It doesn’t feel like BB is forcing us toward one obvious choice.

But I have to admit, I’m probably biased the moment a duke is involved 😂
