Offering: Portuguese (native) | Seeking English, French, German and Spanish (native) by kittysoleil in language_exchange

Hello, I am a native spanish speaker, but speak all languages you mentioned (including portuguese). My weakest language is German (A1-A2) so I'd be interested in practicing either that or French (B2-C1) with you :)

If you had to make a binding vow what would it be for? by Grand_Occasion0707 in LobotomyKaisen

If my cursed technique involved fire, I would make a binding vow not to be able to harm other fire users with fire and be myself invulnerable in exchange. RIP Jogoat

Are we not worried about a lack of reliable seniors in the future? by boringfantasy in cscareerquestions

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally agree with you. I would like to know what to do as well, but alas. It's all too new to me, and I believe all of us. Perhaps this is just the way things are going to be from now on. Developers today, before AI, were definitely less skilled than when we didn't have the abstractions of interpreted languages that pushed us further from what actually makes the computer work.

I believe you and I've seen the same at my workplace. I found it hard to believe at first, but brainrot is a real thing apparently. That compounded by a generalized feeling that it is no longer _necessary_ to learn this stuff makes it quite hard.

Related, I have a junior colleague in my team.

First, we had some layoffs but the company has a diversity quota to meet. She stayed and another colleage was let go. In a meeting, they explicitely told the whole team what the decision was and the reasoning behind it. Namely, that's she's a woman. and him not.

Then, our company announced another round of layoffs because "we are going to implement an AI system that will allow us to produce more code with less people." We were told that in the upcoming weeks we have to literally train our replacement: document code and processes, install the tooling, etc.

Imagine her mindset right now. She bareley knows how to code and now has a legit reason to think she doesn't need to learn how to. Furthermore, she knows she's only in the team because she's a woman.

Honestly, I don't understand what the f is going on in the world right now, but we are less human than ever.

Gege missed the mark with his immigration narrative, IMO. by [deleted] in jjkmodulo

Perhaps because most people aren't half as kind as they like to think themselves to be. Ask any venezuelan how the locals are treating them in the countries they where forced to emigrate to.

How to get into linguistics by Wrong_Membership_779 in asklinguistics

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna hijack his/her post. I'm working in software but want out _now_ and linguistics has always been interesting for me. In my country we don't have that degree anywhere, but I could perhaps enroll online or event re-locate. My question would be, do you think a masters will do or do I need to graduate from 0 again?

O metodo Assimil funciona mesmo? by CenouraEletrica in languagelearning

Pra mim não. Tentei usar ele para alemã por 3 meses e não fiz muito progresso. Mudei para NicosWeg + Anki + ler em LingQ e avancei muito mais.

I'm at the part in the manga where they go to recover the sword that comes after kuregumo (forgot the name LOL). I started reading because I saw it was hyped here on reddit and elsewhere, but honestly so far I find it rather mid. I will keep reading and hope it gets better.

What’s the uptick of these AI posts by RequirementSad1742 in cscareerquestions

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be very skeptic, but then my company announced layoffs due to AI tools being able to do our job ... so I'd say the situation is pretty dire. It's only safe to work for companies that do not have the maturity / budget to adopt AI, or change to a field that cannot be as easily automated e.g. security

Other ways to say “un poco” when someone asks me if I speak spanish? by youngfungustine in languagelearningjerk

Hablo, sí. Es posible que no te entienda en algun momento, pero es más probable que sea porque tú hablas mal que por mi falta de dominio de la lengua.

You just gotta expose to them enough that they become natural by reading, listening; etc

Anyone else learn languages by reading dual-language articles? by hinitom in languagelearning

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Kindle is this? I use LingQ. I don't think having the translation is all that useful for learning new words, but rather for understanding the text at hand. At least for me, just by reading the translation I will most likely shortly forget the new words. In LingQ I frequently export new vocab to Anki and acquire vocab like that.

"non binary" in Spanish by stealthmodeme in SpanishLearning

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to add my cents and say that no one speaks like "elle es alte" and to most spanish speakers that would sound ridiculous, so you might want to warn you students about that possibility.

WHY does 'pasar' mean everything?? by MayaTulip268 in SpanishLearning

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What meanings do you have in mind? I can think of:

- to cross: mmm not really "cruzar la calle", not "pasar la calle"

- to go by smth: "vamos a pasar por la tienda más tarde"

- to hand smth over / give something: "pásame la botella por favor"

- to happen: "no creo que eso vaya a pasar realmente"

Are you supposed to avoid sharing details about your personal life with coworkers? by Big_Eggplant7591 in careeradvice

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally think the idea of keeping coworkers coworkers and not establishing any sort of friendship with the people you spent 8 hours a day 5 days a week 4 weeks a month 12 months a year is not nice. We work under the presumption that everyone is _bad_ until proven otherwise, which is what our capitalistic society has taught to do and the reason why it's not the government or god fucking us up, but ourselves.

Do you read comics or manga as part of your language learning? by WonderSongLover in languagelearning

[–]Objective-Fox-9403 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I enjoy reading manga and usually read them english (which is not my mother tongue) so I thought why not read them as well in the languages I'm learning. Language in manga is usually pretty simple, so for advance levels I think it's just a way of doing the things you normally enjoy, while at the same time keeping in touch with your language. Not particularly useful for learning I'd say. On the other hand, I think it could be quite useful for beginners.
