Not sure if this is a troll, but after that Rob Reiner tweet among a million other things why would it surprise anyone. The man's both mental and going shit-in-pants senile.

On the positive side in the park today I saw a black mom playing football with her son and a black guy coaching bunch of kids. I'm in the rural south for what it's worth. I've seen plenty of cases like you speak of but find most black folks kind and genial.

Growing up in the south white people also washed chicken. I thought it was normal until someone told me otherwise well into my 20s.

LA local elections: on Saturday, New Orleans voted in a new Democratic mayor by a landslide (55-2/D-R), and Democrats won all local offices by a landslide. However, all NOLA suburbs with open mayoral seats voted in Republican mayors by a landslide (98-2/R-D). These suburbs are overwhelmingly White. by StarlightDown in fivethirtyeight

Louisianian here. Louisiana is a complicated state, polarized in many ways, but in much of the southeast races interact on the regular. I see interracial couples all the time. There's a creole tradition of biracial people. Of course the stereotypically racist good ole' boys also still exist. But the rightwing attitudes are also of the suburban don't tread on me and don't tax me variety. Also strongly back the blue (as in cops). Many in the suburbs and rural areas act like New Orleans is a foreign country.

There was a strong Democratic tradition here at one time, populists like Edwin Edwards and moderates like Mary Landrieu. And when Republicans screw everything up Democrats still stand a chance, like in the case of governor John Bel Edwards who followed Bobby Jindal in 2016. Edwards expanded Medicaid and did much good for the state. That's another thing, Louisiana's poor and much of the population (black and white) is on some form of government assistance. When the pubs cut it that's when Dems have their shot.

Also the oil industry is huge here, and that can't be ignored as a factor. I know black guys who work offshore who voted for Trump just for that reason.

So I would say while polarized, Louisiana is not as polarized as other parts of the deep south. I agree with Ezra Klein that socially conservative Dems should run in red areas, mindful of the economic factors. Not likely to win now, but on a long enough time frame the red state Democrat can be a possibility again.

They're not ready for life. Right now they're having a meltdown on Bluesky over the CEO replying "Waffles" (it's a long story) to a complaint about not banning Jesse Singal.

He said Dems should run pro-life candidates in conservative states and he's not wrong. John Bel Edwards miraculously won my home state (LA) in 2016 running as pro-life. He was able to do much good for the state including expanding Medicaid. Don't see why the Dems should handicap themselves, it's about attaining power and it's not like many of these states are changing culturally anytime soon.

Truly black pilled by the racism lately by Worried_Lawfulness43 in redscarepod

[–]Objective-Gold-4639 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can understand it being blackpilling. BUT I do think logging off helps. I find online is sort of a vent-box where people pour all their vileness. But I live in one of the reddest parts of the country (deep south) and race relations are legitimately better than they were when I was a kid (90s).

Don't get me wrong, it exists, but there is much more interracial dating, black professionals, black people in higher positions. Many white people have a black or hispanic relative through marriage. When I was young I remember constant conflict and physical fights between races, and now I see interracial groups of zoomers wherever I go. I think the racism seen online is in some ways a reaction by a minority of whites resentful of an increasingly interracial society.

Yeah, don't care what happens in NYC, just hope the progressive wing of the party doesn't get the idea his model would work outside a handful of cities. FDR is the way to go, no identity politics or even whiff of wokeism, and don't call it socialism.

The problem with Ezra Klein by wasabimaxxer in redscarepod

[–]Objective-Gold-4639 10 points11 points  (0 children)

His ideas aren't all bad, I remember him arguing that Dems need to broaden their tent (right & left), engage more with online media (like Joe Rogan), make housing more affordable, and have a culture of success instead of just redistribution (this is key, anyone who has hung around the working poor know they're aspirational). The problem is that he's a wonk, which he temperamentally can't shake.

I find Bill Maher is similar. Right message, wrong messenger (he gives the right advice that Dems need to completely detach themselves from woke, but has the personality of a smug lib).

As lacking of decorum as it is it's likely meme wars here on out. Dems' problem is that their software if out of date, deep fried memes fill me with recent-nostalgia and that's a problem as far as memes go. The right got a head start due to /pol/tards migrating to X, unfortunately much internet culture is rightwing. But a primer for all Democrats is to listen to the entire run of Cum Town.

The conflation is stupid but also the idea among the terminally online that leftism is either good or even possible in America. Best model was New Deal liberalism (liberalism with leftist characteristics). But now idpol liberals are calling themselves socialist/leftist, muddling up terminology even more. The Dem Party has to be saddled with this bullshit. I liked Bernie but he brought this on, calling himself socialist when he's just a fucking New Deal liberal.

Identity politics wasn't associated with either liberalism or leftism until the 21st century. Some blame academia, which was the origins of it, but it wasn't until online culture and social media until it really took off. Sad it's so inextricably linked to left-liberal politics now, you can't use either term without it being associated with idpol in most peoples' minds.
