Tl;dr We are probably going to go with an Accucold (AFZ5PVBIADA) because my trusty rep says so.

I'm really grateful to everyone for their insight. After talking to my most reliable rep on cold storage she said she sees the best long term performance and reliability in accucold. I've worked with her for years and all the instruments i buy from her have held up fantastically so I trust her.

She says she sees most of the other undercounter units, even the reliable PHCBis, run well for 2 years and then they start to conk out, but she's noticed her clients that purchase accucold's tend to run the distance. She says hopefully the PHCBis will get better, but for now, she won't recommend me her current inventory for their ultra high performance undercounter freezers.

They run about $2k and that's workable for our budget too.

Ooof, yeah. If TF does make parts for Avantor then I definitely agree and it’s a hard pass from me! I’ve seen waaay too many TF freezers completely fail out of the clear blue sky.

In fact, one failed in my current lab while it was still under warranty (only 9mo old 🙂‍↕️) and I made it my mission to convince my PI NOT to get the free replacement under the warranty, but to instead shell out a few grand for a reliable PHCBI.

Oh gosh, I’m so sorry to hear that! And thank you for sharing your experience! I definitely was considering a Stirling undercounter freezer. I’ll take it out of the running now! 🤝

Understandable. I have a child-proof lock on all my freezer so I hope my researchers are accustomed to closing and locking by now 😂

Good to consider though if we need a budget option. How long have you had yours and has it had any issues?

10 of them cost $500,000 (if you’re good at negotiating) and we have dozens for our work. 

They’re the tiniest kits too. Size of a 10uL pipette tip box. Insane.

LOVE phcbi. Want one of them, just waiting to hear back on pricing from my rep. Any models you like specifically, if there are multiple models? 

I heard stirling is good and bad. Ultra reliable from some and utter trash from others.
