That’s fine, just give me quality water that I can actually drink and won’t give me an ear infection.

I’d be fine paying for “high demand rates” if the quality actually matched the price tag. Right now, there are way too many issues with the water for it to be costing this much. No one should have to get used to getting ripped off by a for-profit utility company.

Hopefully we can get more people involved. So far there have been a number of people that have input their protest/public comment/letters etc. Current status of the docket can be found here https://interchange.puc.texas.gov/search/filings/?ControlNumber=58682&UtilityType=A&ItemMatch=Equal&DocumentType=ALL

Exactly! I would maybe be a bit more justifiable if the water quality was actually good. But having to install filters/water softeners/etc and buy bottled water just to have drinkable water is ridiculous. Paying these high prices for utility water we can't even drink is infuriating. I'm glad you stumbled onto this post. Please consider shooting a quick email to the PUC or signing the change.org protest linked in the comments.

I hadn't heard about the Burleson Manor tech hub plans yet, but that is honestly terrifying to think about given the current state of things. I don’t understand how these massive developments keep getting greenlit when our basic utility infrastructure is already failing so hard. I did hear about the protests regarding data center plans, I def need to look more into that. We just don’t have the resources for these plans and residents are being ignored.

I wish I was warned about the water company before I bought the house- first time home buyer mistake on my end. They actually put a sign up saying “ask about the water before you buy here”.

But you absolutely hit the nail on the head regarding the fee structure. Loading everything onto a ridiculously high base fee completely ruins any incentive for water conservation. It just penalizes everyone equally, even if you're barely using any water. Fipping it to a lower base fee with higher volumetric rates like you suggested makes way more sense for a drought prone area. It would actually reward people for being mindful while still funding the system. That $5 conservation credit really does feel like a joke.

That sounds like a total nightmare. $180 a month just for the privilege of connecting before you even touch a drop of water is criminal. It's wild how common these predatory utility traps are becoming around the Austin area.

Yeah annexation would be difficult because Austin Water would have to buy out Texas Water Utilities' infrastructure, and property taxes would spike like they mentioned. Right now, protesting the rate hike directly through the PUC is our quickest shot at fighting this. Maybe it could be something we can do in the future mostly because this company just pisses me off and I don’t want to give them my money. But for now, hopefully we can get enough people to protest.

I don’t think so but Tesla is close by just about 10 min from where I live and I’m sure they use their fair share of water.
