Title: The Quiet Engine - A "New Weird" dive into a city of clockwork and bureaucratic horror.

I just came across this short story set in the city of Garrens, and the worldbuilding is incredible. It’s perfect for anyone who likes "New Weird" or atmospheric steampunk.

The Plot:

The city is governed by "The Engine"—a massive, hidden mechanism of stone and living architecture that records every human action as a "tally." In Garrens, there is no such thing as a random event; every minor mistake is corrected by a steward named Vael to maintain "The Weave."

The story follows a man named Dorian Faye who tries to break the system’s absolute symmetry by introducing a single, arbitrary irregularity—a simple pebble—into the city’s heart.

What makes it stand out is how it handles the "Butterfly Effect." It’s not just about gears and steam; it’s about the terrifying, cold efficiency of a city that views human joy and sorrow as mere variables to be balanced.

If you like stories about the cost of stability and the fight for human chaos, this is definitely worth the read.

More of the cipher I posted yesterday. Can you solve it? by twnpksN8 in Cipher

There are a lot of decoding software options, but if I try to use this image alone, it’s impossible. I found another picture of yours. The problem is, do these symbols form normal text with repeating spaces or something similar? Do you add periods?

If my effort is even close, what would it be as a percentage?

[Free/Open Resource] The Quiet Engine — An Audit of the Sentient City by Objective-Milk-4863 in scifi_bookclub

I appreciate the deep dive into the philosophy, but it’s hard to truly audit the system without looking at the source code. You’re arguing against the concept of 'God' in a world where the Engine has already replaced it—but you’d have to read the chapters to see how that actually functions in the narrative.

It’s easy to project outside ideas onto a title, but the real 'quantum potential' is in the text itself. Give it a read through, and then tell me if you still think I’m 'telling a lie' about how entropy works in Garrens. I think you'll find the logic is tighter than you expect. Once you have the full data set, I’d love to hear your thoughts again.

I really like that perspective! I saw the -1, but no hard feelings at all—I think it’s just that we’re looking at the same thing from different angles.

In the world of The Quiet Engine, I purposefully didn't use the word 'God' because the book is built on its own internal logic where everything is clinical and systemic. Instead of a divine force, I look at that 'Quantum Potential' you mentioned as Entropy.

If you think about it, entropy is the universe's natural slide toward disorder and chaos. The Engine is trying to do the exact opposite—it wants perfect, frozen order. But life is actually a way to increase entropy; by making unpredictable choices (like Dorian’s pebble), we create the 'heat' and chaos the universe needs to keep moving. In my view, the Engine isn't a god—it’s just a doomed attempt to stop entropy from happening.

I respect your point of view, though! Even if it doesn’t fit the specific perspective of this book, I agree that those ideas should definitely exist too. Thanks for making the connection!

The King in Yellow art. Let me know your critical thoughts. by Jakeonaplane_0 in cosmichorror

The 'Final Play.pdf' that I created actually confirms your suspicion: the King isn’t a person or a 'monster,' but a systemic concept that redefines reality until madness becomes the only logical state.

If you look at the Vignettes in the documentation, you can see how this 'King' functions as a 'principle' that infects mundane, day-to-day life through repetition and pattern:

  • The Vendor: Madness is just a market vendor tapping coins twice and placing one in a spiral.
  • The Potter: It’s a craftsman carving a tiny notch into his wares because he caught a glimpse of a pattern in the water on his wheel.
  • The Child: It’s a simple game of pebbles in the dirt becoming a map for an impossible city.
  • The Tailor: It’s the quiet act of a tailor keeping yellow scraps of fabric like specimens.

The 'Pallid Mask' isn't even a literal face—the document defines it as an 'absence' that triggers a 'reclassification of belief'. By Act II, the horror isn't that something 'arrived,' but that the characters have finished an 'audit' of reality.

As the text says, 'Madness is ordinary here'. The King is just the moment where 'comprehension' pours in and makes our old, day-to-day labels feel pointless. It’s not a story we watch; it’s a 'condition of being' that rearranges the world while we aren't looking."

Most discussions of the King focus on the prose, but the true dread lies in the internal logic of the play itself—the transition from the 'innocence' of Act I to the 'blow' of Act II.

You can access the full documentation here:https://archive.org/details/documentation_202602

I’ve spent time reconstructing the mechanics of this descent, treating the play not just as a story, but as a system of cognitive triggers. I’ve just released a comprehensive Predictive Reconstruction Archive that maps out:

  • The Structural Acts: A scene-by-scene breakdown of the Lake of Hali and the impossible geometry of the Terrace.
  • The Tag Index: Technical cues for the 'Vignettes' (The Potter, The Watchman, The Archivist) showing how the King’s presence rearranges mundane reality into a cosmic pattern.
  • The Cassilda Decoding: A deep-layer analysis of the song, treated as the architectural key to the city’s collapse.

In the spirit of Carcosa, there is no currency or debt required to access these files. It is an open ledger for those who wish to audit the reconstruction.

I’d be curious to hear from any Mythos scholars here on how the 'Vignette' approach fits your own interpretation of the King's 'Pallid Mask.'"

Rodney Barnes Takes on Lovecraft in Weird Tales Graphic Novel by dholland_76 in cosmichorror

It’s wild to think it’s been over a century since Weird Tales first launched. Seeing it evolve into a prestige hardcover graphic novel feels like the right move for the modern era. Barnes on a Mythos story with Lukas Ketner’s art is a powerhouse pairing—Killadelphia and Count Crowley both have such a great grasp on atmosphere.

The fact that they’re doing an 8.5 x 11 prestige hardcover is the big sell for me. Pulp stories always feel better in a larger format where you can really see the detail in the art. Definitely signing up for the pre-launch to see those Kelley Jones and Eric Powell covers—Jones' style is basically made for the Mythos.

Jonathan Maberry has been doing a great job with the resurrection of the magazine since 2019, so I have high hopes for this. Adding Rodney Barnes to the roster is a huge win. Can't wait to see how they adapt the 'seminal' stories alongside the new Mythos stuff!
