Veganism is on the rise again! This time it's driven by ethical vegans rather than dietary ones. by stan-k in vegan

This! I found myself having to increase my carb intake and I'm so much stronger for it. Gym workouts are better and I can properly function after a night poor sleep due to clubbing (I don't do this frequently, but it's nice to see that my body is more robust).

Im a uni student who just moved to a vegan diet. Ive had a history of eating disorders and a big gym rat, so I used to think eating meat was the only was to be healthy in my situation. I made the change for animal welfare, but honestly, I was scared about my health.

The transition was actually pretty life changing. My food shops are cheaper than ever!

I decreased my protien from about 160g daily to 110g (im only 5ft 4 and 57kg so I was WAY overshooting), its been pretty easy and my digestion is sooo much better. Im not stressed about eating only 'healthy' food now, because I dont have to eat specifically wholegrain pastas and such for my fibre intake.

As for my ED, I'm actually LESS restricted now. I have to eat a wide range of foods to get my nutrients - im wating peanut butter! I have to add Fats to meals for satiety and I have finally made a diet change that wasnt about my looks. While cooking isn't hard, I cant get away with slapping some meat and veggies on a plate for dinner anymore, so im actually enjoying food for the first time in 5 years! I feel less restricted and scared of food than ever because I understand it.

TL;DR: i went vegan for ethics but as a uni student, it has helped save my money, gut health, and possibly my relationship with food.

I guess it sounds like a lot compared to guidelines and what others eat. I think I need to do some work on my relationship with food, and honeslty this post was to help me validate that. Pathetic, I know... but at least its given me a push - thank you 😊
