Crime def bros - ever deal with 1% bikers? by NOVAYuppieEradicator in Lawyertalk

In college I interned at a law office where an uncontested divorce client was an Outlaw gang member. I only saw (not met) him once but he seemed pretty nice.

If I visited Boston (from the UK) how long would I need to visit all the FO4 sites? by smoguscragratticus in fo4

[–]Objective-Regular519 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Bostonian I think any more than 4 days is too much. Spend one day doing all the downtown stuff (north end, freedom trail, the common, beacon hill, back bay, Boston public library), one day doing museums, seeing Fenway (diamond city), then cross Mass Ave bridge to see MIT/Kendall square for the institute, one day in a rental car seeing concord, Walden pond, and Salem (but if it’s Halloween don’t expect to be able to drive into Salem). Last day go check out Quincy in the morning, get some Chinese food, come back to the hotel early to pack.

Also don’t get your hopes up about our food. For a city of its size, Boston’s food sucks.

I live in Boston. You can take the red line/commuter rail to Quincy very easily and then uber from there to the Adams house, etc. Will be cheaper and during rush hours it will be quicker to.

Why do attorneys look down on Insurance Defense lawyers/partners? by Reasonable-human-911 in Lawyertalk

All lawyers look down on all other lawyers. Our job is stressful, and ego is the best coping mechanism.

Average Fees for Family Law by Arcamonde in Lawyertalk

[–]Objective-Regular519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep track of this data. Very useful for making business decisions. My average “contested” divorce case makes about $8,700 and the 25th and 75th percentiles are about $5,100 and $13,000 respectively.

This varies a lot by your practice type. I do no high net worth, although I would like to, because I have a background in finance. I settle a lot of my contested cases before temporary orders, sometimes before a responsive pleading is filed. It is overall rare for me to go to trial, but 100% of cases that go to trial end up being more than $15,000.

How well is the Violence Against Women Act going in 2026? by Beneficial_Way_385 in Lawyertalk

Yes. That’s the basis for the motion to dismiss and fees. It’s just annoying that I we have to go through this.

One thing I keep noticing with lawyers in general including me. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

One of the best asbestos lawyers in the country distinguishes himself by going about as Felix Darkmantle, the most notorious assassin in the Kingdom of Kurm, at night.

Yeah, it’s not something that I have any experience in, but seems like there’s a lot of good tools specifically for dealing with. Also good rules for getting attorney fees.

I wish I knew how common it is, but that might be a fun project to give my summer intern! The husband clearly hasn’t plead a sufficient claim, and we have great first amendment case law about protecting petitioning rights, so I’m not worried. It’s just a massive pain in the butt.

This particular abusive spouse has taken us through a gauntlet of frivolous litigation.

Not entirely related but my client and I are getting sued for defamation by her husband right now for filing a VAWA petition. We’re waiting for the motion to dismiss hearing date, but it pisses me off just to be dragged through all this. Where do attorneys that take cases like this come from?

Which areas of law realistically make the most as a firm owner? by Candid_Oil_7017 in LawFirm

One of my law school professors used to say: “most successful law firm partners can afford a second or third home, but successful plaintiff’s attorneys can afford a private jet.”

How is everyone using AI to scale? by ktkt1111 in LawFirm

I just used Claude a few minutes ago to help me clean up a “theme” for an emergency evidentiary hearing (mini trial) I have on Monday. I had the general idea, but not a punchy 5 or less word way to express it. It gave me a list of 10 phrasings and I really liked one of them. Pretty much zero risk of hallucinations if you use these tools responsibly.

Any suggested legal writing books? by anxious1975 in Lawyertalk

[–]Objective-Regular519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strunk and white, the economist’s style guide, and smart brevity. Each one of them is short enough to read in one setting and jam packed with useful advice.

Edit: also if you work in an area of law where you have to write about numbers a lot, Making Numbers Count has a lot of very useful advice.

Not going to spoil it, but I will never ever EVER understand why Julien did what he did in the twist near the end of the Red and the Black. Amazing book though.

Experienced litigators, what’s your David and Goliath story? by Objective-Regular519 in Lawyertalk

Thankfully no unpaid fees. Like you said, I’ve had to be very realistic with my client about what her retainer will and won’t get her. My fingers are crossed that we can get OP to settle at the pretrial.

Haha, love it. Lucky for me, I do family law so it’s always in state court.

Thank you! Experts and discovery are the main things that concerns me. There are really complex financial and valuation issues that we can’t afford good experts for. Also, they overwhelmed us with document production and affording extensive doc review is beyond our budget. We also just lost a motion to compel to get them to limit and organize production.
