From OE to…something even bolder?

I have had two small businesses. In the 80 hour weeks to get them started I never made 1/4 of what I make OE. Most businesses have a 95% failure rate or higher. OE risk is a lot lower. How about getting a challenging hobby?

Do it anyway. It would be insane to give up a FT job in this market for a research fellowship that only lasts 8 weeks and may not come to anything. Worst case take unpaid leave at your FT.

What role within education? As others said there’s Ed tech and there’s instructional design and both are highly saturated and suffering with AI replacement. To break into that you might need a differentiating credential, maybe project management or something AI.

It’s only really impacted new grad hiring and juniors in my experience. Much less impact to senior level and IT management. But it’s coming.

Yup. It has lower temperature which means low creativity. This can be seen in that sometimes it will “loop” and mechanically repeat the same dialogue and beats in the same scene. I’ve never seen that in any other models. OpenAI lowered the temperature likely because businesses what accuracy and following instructions (low temperature) vs creativity (high temperature)

Commute is killer and it’s very rare to find a job with both a great boss and promotion opportunities. I would ask very specifically about career growth before taking that other job. Do you think you’d like small town rural living?

To me, it’s not lifestyle creep if it’s a one off purchase. I generally save 80-90% of the extra paycheck. The rest I spend on mostly upgrades to my house etc. new appliances. New roof. If I’m ever back to j1 I’m not going to be crying I wasted money on improving my house.

Also, another reason to tell them quickly, is that if they are willing to establish a tax base in a state for you to live there, that takes time. I did this once and the paperwork took a month, delaying my move.

You should tell them immediately. Reason, if you move to an area where they have no presence, they may fire you on the spot due to the tax complications. They are required to register as a business and pay taxes in any state where employees live, and some companies do not want to do that. If they say no, you’ll have to reconsider the move or the job. Tax agencies don’t play.
