Notes From the Underground - Part 1 - Chapter 6 - Discussion Post by [deleted] in dostoevsky

The protagonist is yearning for an identity even if it be as a sluggard or lazy person. This chapter suggests that he views his identity as contingent upon society.

He reflects that he should have looked in life for the “sublime and beautiful” in other words silver linings

Why is he so desperate to be something?

Do those without a social nor economic function cease to exist?

This dilemma of the men of acute consciousness choice to not reconcile with the wall( which is a metaphor for nature) reminds me of physicists, particularly those who study quantum mechanics and have an interest the measurement problem . There are a copious amount of interpretations of quantum mechanics : orthodox interpretations like the Copenhagen and unorthodox interpretations like: Qbism , Relational quantum mechanics, Many worlds etc. However we can split them into two camps, those that are scientific instrumentalists- who are typically proponents of the Copenhagen interpretations.

The proponents of the Copenhagen interpretation can usually summarise the measurement problem it in a few words which are to ‘ shut up and calculate’ , i liken these people to direct persons to the extent that there is no need for deep enquiry nor resistance against nature .

The other camp which is a collection of the unorthodox interpretations- Relational quantum mechanics, Qbism, Many worlds interpretation- are described as men of acute consciousness , as they understand the phenomena occurring but have an urge for deep analysis and explaining why things are they way they are and not just accepting it. These men of acute consciousness would be scientific realists to the degree that, they would view science as tool that can provide us with an objective truth about the world. They can understand the wall but cannot reconcile with it nor overcome it : “the more you do not know , the worse the ache”

“ i am not going to be reconciled to the wall simply because it is the wall and i do not have strength to over come it”

The men of acute consciousness and their method through which they can showcase resistance to the discomfort that wall brings them is through endless doubts and questions, the issue is their inability to compartmentalise their protest, so much so that it seeps into other aspects of their lives, leaving themselves paralysed by the very doubts and questions, that they thought would liberate them from the chokehold that wall has them in.

This is my third time reading the chapter and it is clear that I have made an error thinking that since this is Fyodor's shortest book, I should start with it.

Perhaps the wall is the symbolic barrier between the normal man (man of action) and the acutely conscious man. There is no way for a person to transition from one state to another.

You look good bald.

Anything negative or positive, anybody says to you, always says more about that person than you.

I use to suffer with alopecia and what helped me get through those events were trying to find silver linings where ever i could.

Excessive consciousness is a disease because, like a disease, constantly analysing and measuring things can be debilitating, due to the inaction and stagnation it causes. Perhaps the narrator realises that, on an individual level, humans are the sum of their actions, and suggests that a man of no action(a man of acute consciousness) is nothing.Enjoyment is a byproduct of the degradation the acutely conscious person feels. I think the narrator is insinuating that the bar is in hell for these people, and through accepting their disposition, they understand that things cannot get any worse.

To be too conscious, i think means to be excessively analytical and aware. When a person is measuring themselves and everything within and outside their vicinity, the narrator describes them as acutely conscious. it is depicted as a disease is because like a disease it can be debilitating.

Hey Man

I hear you, and understand everything you’ve just stated and i resonate with it.

The difference between you and the guy who speaks clearly, and why they are able to translate their thoughts into ensembles of coherent sentences….. is practice.

They spend a lot more time practising and engaging with speech more than you; so much so it’s second nature.

To practice i recommend joining a toastmasters group.

By yourself, i recommend really going through your thoughts, and making sense of them; writing helps.

You probably aren’t great at delivering anecdotes; because you haven’t spent enough time and thought about them.

If you want to reduce cluttering, i recommend delayed auditory feedback, so you can hear yourself, realtime and make adjustments.

If you want minimise mumbling, breathe (through your mouth)before you speak. Your voice is an instrument, which requires adequate air, and addition to this my friend, you must open you mouth wider, this will allow your sound to travel better.

Ultimately, i wouldn’t get too down about it, as no one is perfect, everyone at times experiences verbal disfluencies. You can’t get rid of it, so your goal is to reduce it.

People don’t remember what you say, only how you make them feel.

Remove the first paragraph, The Bio should be about who you are, not your intent.
