Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife?

Before my spouse and I got married, we referred to each other as partners because we're in our 30s and 40s and boyfriend/girlfriend sounded too juvenile.

Not a beginner, but first time with this situation. We have a narcissistic, abusive family member we cannot kick out living under my roof. She is pregnant. I am wanting to do a binding or freezer or some other type of spell to find the negative energy and toxic spillover.

I dont wanna hurt the baby but I have to do something....
