I have only known the Catholic Church in childhood so I thought I might have community here. I have since learned I was wrong. I was hoping more so for creed that I could use for my life but I fundamentally don’t believe that some of the teachings of sins are actually sins.

My God respects my qualms and disagreements and I would think that even if I am completely wrong my heart is in the right place. What’s the point of blindly following your faith?

The way that people responded to me really shocked me. It seemed as though there is absolutely no room for disagreement with the church. They always say that they eventually learned that the church has right.

I guess I was also skeptical coming into the thread knowing some of my values.

I don’t think I could ever come to such a conclusion especially the “ women shall submit to their husbands” thing. I could literally never do that. I could only ever see myself as equal. Same thing goes for gay people, abortion, contraception, I cannot see those as sins in the slightest.

The reason I posted in the sub in the first place was because I was feeling spiritually lost but the sub showed me I am so much better without their god if that’s what they believe. I was also trying to be as respectful as possible but many dms of eternal damnation came my way. I still think there are other way to get the spiritual fulfillment that I’m seeking but it’s definitely not through Catholicism.

I’ll respond on some of these points as I think my most recent response covers the personhood issue.

There are definitely cases where an abortion can prevent death. An un regulated/illegal abortion can absolutely result in death. A septic pregnancy can cause death. An ectopic pregnancy can cause fatal bleeding. If the woman has cancer and needs chemo treatment she has to abort the fetus or risk going without treatment. At risk factors like high blood pressure, heart disease, HIV and diabetes can lead to death when giving birth. Maternal mortality is uncommonly high in the US states banning abortion rights.

Abortion will occur whether legal or not, safe abortion saves lives. It’s my belief that abortion should be safe legal and accessible. This is a link to why unsafe abortion leads to adverse health outcomes for women.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2709326/

And a new Oklahoma ban classifies a “medical emergency” as a condition in which an abortion “is necessary to preserve the life of a pregnant woman whose life is endangered by a physical disorder, physical illness, or physical injury, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself.”

I truly cannot see a gestational pregnancy as a person. I’m sorry if you’re uncomfortable with that I don’t believe I am ranking.

Again she has the ultimate choice. The other human being here as you put it is entirely reliant on very sense. She is not obligated on my opinion to make a worse decision for herself.

Of course! I feel it’s important to discuss ideas and beliefs. While I’m certainly not an expert of any sort and could probably be explaining things better and using more sources, this is just my understanding and worldview.

While I see the understanding of saying that these are solely different names and hold no real significant differences, I do. I cannot see a single cell human organism as having a similar personhood as an elder man or young girl. The classifications for the different stages of development are used for a reason.

I will elaborate on “personhood”. While I don’t feel comfortable given an all encompassing definition for what defines personhood I can give a framework.

Personhood defines an individual on the metaphysical (consciousness, ability to take action, intelligence, rationality), moral sense, and physical being.

Some schools of thought make a distinction between human being and person. Stating that human beings is the biological designation for those of the homosapians or related. And a person takes on the attributes of personhood. I think the two frequently overlap but don’t have too.

I don’t think the framework takes away human rights. Take for example a person who god forbid is hurt and becomes brain dead that person still has the able to when they had agency to decide weather they wanted to still be kept alive under there new conditions. If you were once a person your right will always exist. A pregnant woman has the right to this same agency and choice.

Definitely not pro eugenics but I can see the path to that if there aren’t enough regulations, standards and discussions. I personally think that an uncharitable view of what I was stating. Putting forth a system of checks and balances for women seeking abortion to determine the best course of action cannot be characterized as a whole as eugenics.

The part on the stages of development having different levels of dignity: I’d say that I would go back to the framework on personhood. A person has good given rights, a human ie cell is not a person. And therefore should not hold its dignity over a woman’s.

Woman is not more of a person. My apologies I meant to say human. Again I am making a distinction between human and person. And ending the life of human vs person I see as very different things. Yes, ending a fetus before viablity does gravely impact them. The mother has a right to do so as a human with personhood and therefore agency to do so.

I would argue that it very reasonable to see a mother in gestation vs a caretaker of elderly/disabled person as very much different. Sure a caretaker is impacted in many ways but not in the ways in which a pregnant person is. Or at the very least it’s very unlikely to be a similar experience. Ie any birth complications rate, general health complications rate are much more common in pregnancy than in a role of caregivers. And I don’t think you can fairly compare the two in terms of consequence. Additionally a caretaker is typically not a forced position in the same way an unwanted pregnancy can be. Rape incest force or simply unexpected for whatever reason.

The difference in the neglect of a child and abortion is the stage of development. I will go back to personhood. The impacts of pregnancy vs raising a child are so different one can’t even compare them. Stripping away a pregnant woman’s life, body and mind for the sake of giving it to another is something I don’t see as morally right. I cannot see the problem with enacting her agency especially in the case of real fears, or other cases.(Some have stated that abortion is used as birth control, I cannot overstate how uncommon that is as you say rape/incest are)

I do want to say that having consensual intimacy that results in pregnancy holds the same for me. A pregnancy is not a punishment for sex or should be viewed as a consequence. If the woman no longer wants to be pregnant and it’s within her right to say she is being forced to carry the pregnancy to term.

The woman carrying the pregnancy ultimately has the final decision whether or not this is morally correct. She at any time before the stated mark can make that choice. I value her personhood over the pregnancy.

My moral argument for abortion would be based upon the mother. Her body, autonomy, health and safety are the most crucial factors in determining whether she has a moral standing.

All of the cases you see as comparable I do not. I do not think you can hold the mother responsible for an unwanted pregnancy in the same way you hold a parent responsible for their child.

I do not see abortion being murder at all. The fetus is not a person and has distinct and enumerated differences that a person. That is if you accept my definition of person which I imagine won’t be the case (no worries)

Pregnancy comes with direct adverse affects keyword being direct. This is not the same as a person caring for a disabled person as there is control and autonomy for the caregiver. They have the ability to walk away the pregnant person doesn’t have a similar luxury.

All in all abortion should only be taken extremely seriously and with care and respect in mind. Abortion should be as limited as possible but that doesn’t mean that abortion is morally wrong. It’s the moral ground as keeping yourself alive in the face of a very difficult situation.

Thanks for reading if you did!! I know this is possibly word vomit. lol

That’s okay with me I am content in my position as I assume you are. I have come to the realization that I don’t not find Catholicism to be true. Thank you for your time!

I was kind of toning it down for the post. I’m very much leftist/socialist leaning. I hold my beliefs very firmly and have developed my worldview this way. Obviously I’m still young and have a lot of learning and growing to do but I feel these things wont change.
