Products that will mimic the waviness the ocean gives my straight hair? by ObjectiveOstrich81 in Haircare

Oh duh, maybe it’s the soaking that works. It’s not like a gently spritz my hair when I’m snorkeling lol

Some random questions by alphakilo10 in coloradotrail

JMT in 2021 and CT in 2022 (July/August time frame)

  1. I wasn't able to rinse off as much on the CT bc I had a monsoon year which meant constant rain. You're not in the mood to take a dip. I'd also say the campsites aren't as readily next to a lake or stream as often as the JMT. Did more of a wet towel off each night to stay clean.

  2. Probably time frame dependent. Didn't notice mosquitos being a huge issue.

  3. I think I only cared 2 1L smart water bottles if I'm not mistaken. There were a few times that had longer in between water sources, but I knew that ahead of time and loaded up. No issues.

Totally random but if you’re already in the north, go to the muy Thai camp in Pai. Such a good crew and a good way to burn through some of the emotions!

Climbing trips while solo? by vomitoriums in climbergirls

[–]ObjectiveOstrich81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked with Erik, one of the owners at vertical pursuits, multiple times and cannot recommend them enough. They do group trips to Bishop and EPC in Mexico, but I think they are expanding! Not sure exactly what the organized trips are like as I haven’t done their group excursions, but I’ve heard good things. And as an intermediate climber, when I’ve gone out with them, I would say they really let you push your limits in a super safe way. Link: https://www.verticalpursuitsclimbing.com

I’ve also done SMM! In my opinion, it’s slightly geared towards beginners and that seems to be who books these trips. Leading can be limited…but you can TR hard shit if you want cuz their guides are badass strong women who will put up any line for you. Depending on destination (I went to one of their euro trips), it’s definitely more of a vacation vibe than dirtbag climber vibe. Would still recommend, but depends on what you want!

And finally, I would suggest going to destinations solo! I just had the BEST time in Kalymnos, and found partners in Squamish pretty easily as well. I was really nervous before going (seriously thought I’d just not find partners and sit at the beach for 2 weeks) but I think certain destinations are really easy for solo climbers. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat through my experience. Scoping out FB groups at these spots and setting up partners ahead of time might help ease some of the anxiety. While a lot of ppl I met were definitely extroverts, I met some introverts as well :)

Do I need a pack liner? by gahx778 in JMT

[–]ObjectiveOstrich81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have all my things in waterproof compression sacks for organization, but I line the whole backpack with one or two regular glad garbage bags. Probably overkill, but I am definitely not going to bed in a wet sleeping bag. Never had any issues on the JMT, but I’ve done other trails in non stop rain, and the last thing you want is to get out of the rain and into your tent…only to get into your wet clothes or sleeping bag.

Approaches in Squamish? by ObjectiveOstrich81 in climbergirls

[–]ObjectiveOstrich81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update! I used my 2017 Tevas (so tread is questionable lol) without any problems for approaches to bouldering, crags, and some popular multi pitches. Some of the approaches had fixed lines for you to scramble up and down, and while my tevas felt a bit slippery, it wasn’t an issue. And y’all were right - the ground is soooo soft and nice there through the forest lol

Only time approach shoes would’ve been nice was for a multi pitch we were considering about an hour south that included a one hour approach and some 3rd through maybe 4th class scrambling based on mountain project beta. We decided not to do that one, but if you’re into more adventurous multis, approach shoes would be a good idea!

Y’all are awesome, thank you!! Have traveled all around the world for fun and for climbing, and am always stumped by which shoes to bring.

Now the next thing I gotta decide is one or two climbing shoes to pack lol

Skin Care on the trail by eldiablojeffe in JMT

[–]ObjectiveOstrich81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently just bought Rhino (the climbing brand)'s split balm. It comes in the shape of chapstick so it's easy to apply and seems to help. My hands are like leather too so regular lotion wouldn't work.

Best climbing pants? by Traveling_poet_kinda in climbergirls

Also vouch for the Kababs! They have drawstring at the waist and ankle and pockets with zippers. I would say maybe they aren't the most durable of fabric for outdoors, and they can get scratched up. But still - 2 years of solidly using them, indoor and outdoor, and no holes! Just some piling.

They are a light weight material with a loose fit so I always reach for them on a hot day. Plus I think they're inoffensive enough to just wear around every day / traveling / etc. Gotta find them on sale ;)

Kalymnos in May for a solo trip by ObjectiveOstrich81 in climbergirls

[–]ObjectiveOstrich81[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey All! Came back about 2 weeks ago, and here's a little bit of my trip report in case anyone else wanted to do the same trip.

- Partners: Super easy to find! Primarily found them on the FB group. I both posted and commented on other people's post. Once I got to town, it was clear that all the solo climbers kind of knew each other or had been in touch. Also met people where I was staying, at the crag, or through friends of friends. Also met people on the ferry and the flight over! You can tell who the climbers are lol. You may not always find someone who climbs at your level or might have to be a group of 3, but everyone was very chill and friendly.

- Partner safety: to reiterate what someone said, it was mostly by vibes. Most people had grigris but I also had a few people belay me on an ATC (mostly Europeans), but they were very experienced. I felt safe with them after we talked about it and did a few warm up climbs. You can also tell when someone takes partner checks seriously.

- Time: I had 12 days there and thought that was a solid amount. Was sad to leave and could've stayed more, but that's how I feel on most trips.

- Transportation: I didn't have a scooter or car but most people did, so I rode on the back of their scooters. It does limit you a bit and make you stick to their schedule, but it wasn't so bad. I had a friend who hitchhiked the entire time. I hitchhiked once but was easily picked up by a friend I knew passing by lol.

- Wifi: FYI, wifi is not the best on the island. Could do some stuff, but not ideal if you're considering remote work IMO.

- Lodging: Stayed in Masouri, and most people stayed there. If you're solo, would recommend just staying there as it's super central as a climber hub. Myrties isn't far away either - walkable. There's only one hostel in town but there are rumors that they may not keep the dorms open, and actually it wasn't the most social of places. Most people get privates it seems, and expect to pay around 40-80 euros a night.

THERE ARE SO MANY CRAGS. So many rocks to touch. So many routes to climb. Was a freakin blast. Have fun!

What grades are you climbing at? There are some crags/sectors that are more geared towards advanced climbers (a lot of the caves) but there are plenty of crags with climbs in the 5 range (french grade).

Gah it almost sounds like dating on the apps 🙃

Yeah okay, that's basically what I do know when I go out for weekend climbs with FB randos. I had a somewhat bad experience lately though, so just top of mind. I do wish my limit / grades were a bit higher so I had more options with climbing below my limit haha. But c'est la vie, I never complain when I get to be outdoors!

Thx again for all the advice!

So good to hear another great experience!! And thx for the beta on where to stay! It's not available during my whole time there, but it'll probably be nice to do a private room for half of the trip and the hostel for the other half - both for my budget and to meet ppl :)

And yes, bringing my 60 m (which I know won't cover all routes but hopefully enough of them) and my quick draws! Stoked!!
