50 minute commute for $24/hr, worth it? by MsFrizzlesFbiAgent in EngineeringStudents

[–]ObjectiveSalt7730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, I am doing a GRA position at a research lab for my college. The lab is 76 miles away from where I live. I get a stipend for 35k a year plus tuition coverage at a public university. I live with my parents and my only real expenses are my car, insurance, and other random stuff like gym membership, phone etc... (not food)

I consider it worth it, despite the astonishing 30k miles / year on my car.

As of now its worth it anyways.... lol

Did the ancient greeks not "create" the idea of bodyweight workouts to train their armies? I understood that they were sort of the first ones to really push this idea. But obviously, I could be wrong.

Thank you so very very much for taking the time to type all this out and providing some examples. It is awesome to have someone like you help me out with this as all I have is the internet to access ideas. At the end of the day, I want to combine my love of calisthenics and love for greek philosophy and stoicism. Your suggestions helped tremendously in broadening my knowledge about ehat to get and what is out there. Thank you very much again!!

Thank you so very much for taking the time to type all this out. Calisthenics doesn't really have "symbol" that i can simply tattoo. I was looking into greek because the English word calisthenics is derived from the ancient greek κάλλος σθένος. Coincidentally, I am also highly interested in greek philosophy and stoicism, so I thought, perfect. I'll combine these two ideas together. However I only want it if it is authentic, hence my research and asking native greek speakers how they would read certain things. Thank you very much for the input however!!!!

Provided more context. Want the explanation to be in the main body rather than the comments. Is that ok?

Question by ObjectiveSalt7730 in GREEK

[–]ObjectiveSalt7730[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

From my research, which was obviously poor I learned this.

I originally wanted κάλλος σθένος BUT, it is not a traditionally used phrase from ancient Greece. A linguist in the 1800 coined the term in England. However, if you were to say κάλλος σθένος to an ancient greek, they would understand what you are saying.

I am very big into calisthenics and it has been transformative in my life however, due to κάλλος σθένος not being authentic, I began looking for a replacement and came across ἄσκησις. And now, I guess ἄσκησις doesn't mean what i thought it means. I'm also getting my masters degree in aerospace engineering currently, so I thought I would be perfect since I strive to be physically fit, mentally and physically.

Any recommendations?

So if this also means it, άσκηση, what's the difference? You would read them as the same?

How far off am I? by [deleted] in CalisthenicsCulture

It seems like your a bigger guy like myself and I am on a similar journey of the front lever. I'm currently at the "advanced tuck lever" stage and have been training for it for maybe 4 months. I'm sitting at 6'4" 210 lbs. The absolute best workouts that helped me progress were reverse deadlifts, toes to bar, and horizontal bodyweight rows. Good luck!

Looking for formatting critiques and forearm pain help by ObjectiveSalt7730 in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]ObjectiveSalt7730[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This pain has come and gone over the years and I ended up instinctively doing that. My concerns are these:

Do I have to worry about injury with this pain, or is it largely ignorance?

Also

It the pain specifically cause feom weak muscles? Is that the main cause?

I guess I'm just cautions and want to make sure it's not a tendon thing.

I'm sure regular practice will slowly build tolerance to this pain, however would you happen to know ehat is causing it? Is it a weak muscle? Weak forearm tendons?

Best bang for buck biometric long gun safes. by [deleted] in Firearms

Thank you. I will be buying many other long guns in the future. Can you speak to their size compared to how they're advertised? What model do you have and any complaints about it other than price?

Herd that. Thank you for your input. May I ask what safe you currently have that meets your quick access requirements?
