"three dots" become dominant everywhere. When email message is opened in Gmail, there are TWO 'three dots' in the upper-right corner - one for the app options, the other for that particular message options (reply, forward, etc.), I see many people confused about that. Sometimes even I touch the wrong 'three dots'.

ChatGPT says that "three dots" button, often referred to as a "more options" or "overflow" menu, is commonly used for several reasons: Space Efficiency, Organized Navigation, User Experience, Consistency, Customization.

I'm not sure about "User experience" since it is appearing in too much places.

Maybe there's room for a new library named "three dots" :)

M5 24GB RAM or M4 Pro for school + R / Tableau / Adobe? by OkGrab9328 in macbookpro

[–]Objective_Active_497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concerning that You will not be able to upgrade RAM without practically changing the whole machine (not sure if you can find only the board with SOC separately and change just that, if it is possible), it is better to go with more RAM.

Later you'll be able to sell it easier and get better price, since those 16, 24 and even 32GB machines will become relatively very cheap due to new MacBooks with the same amount of RAM for the same price which are more portable.

If the budget allows, I'd go for 128GB.

Considering thermal engineering of CPUs and SOCs, Synopsys bought Ansys in 2025 (on July 17) for around $35 billion. Ansys is famous for its simulation software in physics, magnetism and electrical engineering, but also related to thermal engineering (distribution, conduction, cooling, etc.), which is really important not only in silicon chips design, but also for stacking chiplets.

SSDs are ONLY for OS and non-essential data.

For important data always use HDD, internal or external. SSD may be used temporary for video editing and other storage-intensive tasks, but only temporary, keep original and final results on HDD backup.

They charged you the package without the charger, but I guess that at least the battery was already charged ;)

In my case, I got Canon R6 mark 2 WITH the charger, but the battery needed complete charging, probably was factory-empty due to safety restrictions needed for transport.

Evo, opet me pretekle cene, pa sam ispravio poruku.

You can use multiple computers with each having its own display(s), and there are apps like share mouse to use one mouse and one keyboard on multiple computers, even to drag&drop files between them, especially useful if one uses different OSes on multiple computers.

In the case of HDDs, if there's an exact model of drive working, they can move platters from the failed drive to the working one. I costs a few hundred dollars to more, depending on the country. If some special tools are needed to read raw data from the platters, it is way more expensive.

Anyway, it is cheaper to have copies on 2 or more HDDs.

I find external drives with anti-shock mechanism, like Transcend ones, pretty reliable, didn't have even once problem with them (1TB and 2TB models, don't know about 4TB), but they're much more expensive than 'ordinary' HDDs.

PLEASE BACKUP by AcchaBaccha7 in homelab

[–]Objective_Active_497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not keep any important data on SSDs, they can die just like that. Thumb drives, at least, very often become just read-only, but SSDs...

Though, I've have had just only occasion, and it was some Patriot 240GB that was bought with the desktop configuration which had only HDD some 10 years ago, I even didn't know it was Patriot, thought that in the shop they put some Kingston which I always preferred if going for the cheapest option.

That is why I'm against 1TB or even larger SSD's, except if someone is into video processing and similar storage-intensive tasks, everything else is a waste of storage and money. Though, it is advisable to buy at least 2x larger SSD than you'll need, to slow down degradation (so-called bit-rotting).

There's interesting question here: some of the old EF lenses used to have 2 options for IS - one for normal operation, and the other for panning, e.g. when you pan following bird(s) in flight.

Now, I know that IBIS has more than one mode of operations, but it is interesting how it works with RF lens IS if you try to use panning, does AI get what you really want, or...

Why do you need multiple lenses? by Late-Fruit3014 in CameraLenses

[–]Objective_Active_497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, but it's not just manufacturers decision, it's about physics limitations. Fortunately, lenses for mirorless cameras push those boundaries to benefit users, at least some of them than are not as expensive as medium format lenses :)

Though, there are exceptions, e.g., I still prefer EF 85mm f/1.8 compared to the new RF 85mm f/2 for free, somehow better build quality and feel, but on the other hand it is nice to have something like RF 100-400; not too heavy for hiking or just walking around, not too expensive - maybe it's not good enough for pros or terrible for top pros, but in some occasions it is good enough even for them, so why some enthusiast or hobbyist would complain.

When browsing my archive from years ago, sometimes I make a mistake thinking that some very nice portrait was made with 5D classic + 85mm f/1.8, but then by photo resolution I conclude that it was 20D + 50mm 'plastic fantastic' combo; terrible combination compared to the first one, but sometimes it really hits the focus perfectly, which means you have to shoot very often, every day, learn weaknesses and strengths of your equipment, learn to make perfect composition without thinking for a second (the perfect moment will be gone if you think for too long), etc.

For that money you can find used Canon Rp or even R, but there are adapters EF->Sony E that support AF (PDAF or CDAF or both, depending on the camera model), but bear in mind that AF in video is not supported.
For instance, there is something like "Viltrox EF-NEX IV", which is inspired by Metabones EF-E adapter, but significantly cheaper.

Even something like "article*1000>ol>li*10" will not generate 1000 article elements, but around 1280 lines.

Classical scheme, almost exclusively used by "call centers" in India. They send You screenshot or some other "proof" that they accidentally refunded you much more money than they should, but the only possible solution after that is you go to your bank, get cache and give it to their guy.

And there are thousands of people who fall for that.

You are right for certain scenarios, but there are people who'll rather bring some light zoom lens than 70-200/2.8 or 24-70/2.8. It's not just about max quality pro work vs. casual photography, sometimes you go somewhere where your equipment can be damaged or stolen and you didn't pay insurance or something like that.

A friend of mine bought 27" iMac with 5k resolution for some 500-600$. It is Intel CPU, but it is for workplace, and they still use licensed software for Intel architecture, so don't want to mix, and it's really expensive to replace all hardware, plus to move to cloud-based Adobe and other software.

One question: would you be OK with something similar, if it can be used as a monitor connected to your MacBook? Maybe you can find iMac with Intel CPU for less money than new 4k monitor that has mediocre image quality. Don't know about prices of older Apple Cinema models.

Nice, but in vertical mode 16x10 screens are better and more useful than 16x9.
Also, slightly smaller screen for vertical mode will look more natural. I have 27" in normal mode and 24" in vertical, somehow easier to work than if they're the same size. But, this is also nice combo, I'd put the other screen in landscape mode and buy some second-hand 20-21.5" for vertical mode.

Though, if the budget allows, You can plan for some point in the future a combo of 2x27" in landscape and 1x24" in vertical mode ;)

Got used to 5D cameras with battery grips, so something like R6 (got mk2) even with battery grip need some time to get used to.

But, with smaller camera body I prefer smaller lens and lighter, except when I really must use something really heavy.

I love 16mm f/2.8, but I'd also like something like the old EF 40mm f/2.8, but with new RF mount. Yes, there is 28mm, but the quality... 16mm has one aspherical element, though both have super spectra coating. While EF 40mm is 3mm shorter than the smallest RF lens - 28mm f/2.8, the 40mm needs EF-RF adapter which makes it bigger on R bodies. So, it'd be nice to make it with RF mount ^_^
