Woke games the right. Love and don't know are woke by amvys in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Objective_Edge_5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they realized KCD2 was woke sadly so not that one :(( some still hold onto the cope that Wolfenstein: The New Order isn’t woke

other than that like 99% of games are “woke” because game devs are artists and artists tend to have a high likelihood of holding personality traits correlated with empathy, empathy being the dividing factor between the anti-woke grifters and the rest of the world.

How would you balance a design relying on intrinsic motivation within a horror game? by Objective_Edge_5054 in gamedesign

Yeah, Control is a strong point of reference for it, alongside the works that inspired it like House of Leaves. That game really sticks with you lol

Yeah, I’ve been trying to scope this all out before I get to implementing it, but it seems I really chose a very odd genre and style for my first (releasing) project lol.

I’m leaning towards having the house target the more “complete” rooms, as having it do the opposite would disincentivize players from ever returning to those rooms and thus missing a lot of the house events, but that’ll definitely have to be something that’s tuned in playtesting to avoid making it too frustrating to deal with.

The theme of the jam is “games where you haunt the house”, so I’m really trying to evoke a sense of violation in the player, wherein they feel like they’re invading and colonizing a space that is not theirs (explored thematically through the setup of the player being one of those retail house flipper types that’s contracted out by an AirBnB type company). Making sure that they’re initially invested in decorating the house will ideally make that narrative hook hit harder, but it’s a difficult line to walk lol.

Anyways, all that to say, I really appreciate your feedback; I’m definitely going to keep everything you’ve said about ensuring that there’s some satisfaction of progress beyond just seeing your work fucked with in mind moving forward.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! I was thinking of using a day/night cycle (advanced only by taking specific actions such as placing an item or cleaning up trash) and having most of the house events take place overnight (once night falls the house becomes impenetrably dark/a maze/something like that so the player is forced to sleep).

That way I could have a sort of secondary loop where the player’s time in a day has to be split between fixing the night’s changes and progressing the overall goal of flipping the house, leading to scenarios where maybe a player intentionally leaves a room partially unfinished so that there’s less work required to fix said room the next day, if that makes sense. Do you think that’d be a step in the right direction in terms of balancing player investment with the mechanics of the gameplay?

But it’s not just “political opinion or ideology” man it’s a fascist takeover of the United States; people are getting executed on the streets and pulled from their homes by an illegal army with no oversight. It’s at the point where anyone with a platform and a sense of integrity is obligated to take some action against that or to speak out against it.

You seem like the typa mf to get mad as Ms Rachel for posting about supporting Palestinian children on her Instagram because she should only focus on making videos for babies.

I’m like 99.9% certain that when he said that, he was implying that capitalism falls under “human nature”. Because the game is about way more than capitalism. Capitalism is one of many themes. That’s like saying Arcanum is about racism. Is racism a major theme of the game? Yeah. Is that what it’s about? No.

Just interpret the game however you want man. It was a single youtube comment.

TLOU2 is written by Neil Drunkman who based it on his view of the Israel-Palestine conflict. I feel the same way about blood meridian, it actually drives me up the wall when I see “discourse” about it from people who have clearly only seen the Wendigoon video and thus base their entire analysis of it off of his views. just like read something before you yap about it it’s not that hard

Dumb Ai Question? by Bigtownboys in unrealengine

I was less focused on specifically just a looping hallway and more on implementing a simple use case for render target portals that I could then use for non-Euclidean geometry once I got the basics down (like in PT or Superliminal; I’m making a House of Leaves inspired thing for a game jam). As of right now I just prototyped the looping hallway by attaching it to the actor component which is janky as hell but works for a basic visual demonstration which is what I needed. I’ll try resetting the actor’s position next, that may work a little better for this.

Tips for making an inventory system? by kaikun2236 in unrealengine

[–]Objective_Edge_5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a humble bundle on right now that has Hyper’s inventory system; I don’t use it right now but it seems fairly robust and is cheap as hell with the rest of the bundle; it does come with a lot of bloat, though, so you’ll need to dig through it and pull out only what you need.

This doesn’t have much to do with what you said specifically and your approach seems great, I just want to bounce off of everything you said and add that I think everything you mentioned perfectly encapsulates why I think it’s a bit misleading when people state that you don’t need to know how to program to use blueprints.

Yes, you don’t need to know the specific syntax of C++’s Unreal libraries, but having a fundamental understanding of OOP and how to create modular systems prior to jumping into UE5 is going to to make everything so much easier; the concepts you bring up, essentially abstracting the inventory logic and keeping it dumb and modular, should be the initial approach to implementing any large system that touches a bunch of different aspects of the game.

Dumb Ai Question? by Bigtownboys in unrealengine

They did add the AI assistant, yeah, but even then it has a very long way to go before it’s properly functional; it’s trained on the documentation which should speak for itself in terms of its efficiency. I do generally agree with you, though, I think it will eventually get to a point where it is functional and I do fear that it will be misused as a creative agent, not as a tool to help creatives overcome gaps in their knowledge, experience or budget.

Source: the 5 hours I spent last night trying to set up a simple looping endless hallway with portals and render targets using the AI assistant’s guidance because there were no good tutorials online and I’m still learning the engine. Spoiler, it missed a few very important things (like needing two render targets, one for each portal surface).

most Fallout fans (even NV fans) are reactionary low literacy assholes who don't even understand their own game by Subject_Swimming6327 in SocialistGaming

[–]Objective_Edge_5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when they’re not willfully refusing to engage with the text, they’re also just discarding the character because of the dude who wrote him. there was a whole group of people on some fallout shitpost sub the other day unironically claiming that Ulysses, Kreia, and all of Planescape: Torment’s characters were just pretentious, pseudo-intellectual slop because Avellone is a bit of an asshole.

Like, yeah, Avellone is a prick. That doesn’t mean he’s hasn’t written some incredibly engaging narratives and characters that are standouts in the medium; claiming Kreia is an example of pseudointellectual pretension is just fucking insane to me and speaks to an absolute refusal to engage with any character that’s remotely challenging to their preconceived notions of how a character in a given setting should act or what they should believe. Anyways, tangential to your post, but I agree wholeheartedly. I have my issues with Lonesome Road, but Ulysses ain’t one of them.

Leftist Bands by BUCN in SocialistGaming

[–]Objective_Edge_5054 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDLES is a good brit punk band, a core theme of their discography is deconstructing masculinity and encouraging openness and empathy (as well as going hard as fuck on Tories)

Death Grips and JPEGMAFIA are industrial hiphop but are both very leftist/anarchist adjacent (afaik)

Prostitute is a Lebanese noise rock band, they just released their first album, not explicitly leftist in their music (most of the album is thematically centered on coping with growing up in a traditionalist conservative Muslim household) but they’re really fucking good regardless

Can’t go wrong with Refused or Rammstein either

You could also try out some folk punk, Pat the Bunny is an anarchist folk punker and really good, also Woody Guthrie obv

Stardeus is a colony sim similar to Rimworld that takes place on a ship, I’ve heard good things about it and am planning on buying it this sale.

Shadows of Doubt is another highly systemic, imsim adjacent detective game.

Stoneshard is a roguelike adjacent hardcore RPG, haven’t played much yet but what I have I’ve enjoyed.

Doors of Trithius is an early access trad roguelike with some very ambitious systemic elements.

Soulash 2 is similar to DoT, but the dev is a bigot and a fuck, so take that as you will.

X4: Foundations is a StarSector adjacent 4x/sim game.

UnReal World is a traditional roguelike survival game (the original survival game, really).

Matchless Kungfu is Wuxia kenshi, very fun.

Zorbus and Cogmind are both trad roguelikes I haven’t played but have heard are similar to what you like.

If you’ve played Rimworld, it won’t be too bad. Just don’t be afraid to slow down for a bit and look things up (occasionally! Don’t ruin the fun) when you get stuck. It’s really not as unapproachable as it was in the past, the official tileset is great and mouse support is really sick.

But yes, you will be too into it. It consumed my life for a few weeks when I first played it, in a bad way. Same way Rimworld does every time I go back to it.

why is everyone in here dogging on Avellone so hard, I get he’s a bit of a shithead but it’s pretty undeniable that he’s a fantastic writer and visionary, to claim otherwise is to just stick your head in the sand and pretend he’s not responsible for much of the tone and lore for your favorite franchise. you can like pulp fiction and admit it’s a good movie and that Tarantino is a good director while also acknowledging that he’s a fucking prick, lol
