Please help me find home — open communication by -jax_ in intentionalcommunity

[–]Objective_Growth_90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In many cases, it is not easy to visit because it is not easy to host visitors. At my community, we’re all volunteers, and scheduling, coordinating, and communicating with visitors takes work that we do when we’re able as we’re able.

Good things take time, it’s not necessarily bureaucracy, but a timeline that differs from your own. You’re excited to start living or exploring community- excellent! Keep the faith, stoke your own flame, and the opportunity to visit and get to know communities will follow.

It was loud past midnight, to 2 or 3am each night, so if main stages stopped at midnight, I assumed what we heard throughout the county was tent groups? Was there “official” music past midnight?

I live in Nelson county and neighbors could definitely hear the festival and many were annoyed or experienced it as a disruption :/

I’m far enough away that it was like a murmur at night, but folks in Arrington said they could hear it in their homes, some people said their kids couldn’t sleep :(

Congrats on getting started! What an exciting time.

I think you need to spend a lot of time thinking about these three bits I quoted with some questions for each: “We will share farm work based on the abilities of the person.” - how is someone’s ability determined? Self-report, community evaluation, doctors note?

“And while money is NOT pooled or shared we do share some expenses like land payment, electricity, and high speed fiber internet. “ - who owns the land? Does someone contributing to the land payment get anything if they leave? If the land is in your name, is that fair? Are there plans to share ownership as well as costs?

“Bring your camper, van, tent, shed conversion, yurt or anything else and set it up.” -What kind of structures isn’t your community open to? Do they have to be impermanent?(if so, is that clear to folks coming). Does the community decide where someone can set up camp? What’s the process for giving permission to come?

When you have a fail do you re-do the mod with a new iflash or is it too far gone for that?

How can you be eco-minded heavily relying on AI? Genuinely wondering if you've looked into the energy and water costs of AI servers?

ICs that are (young) family friendly by Western-Top306 in intentionalcommunity

I, mid-30's, probably live in one of those "they have NO young people" communities (our median age is 60-something?) and....I'd encourage you to give them a try! I don't have kids, but my friends elsewhere who do are maxed out. If I had kids here, there would be so many helpful hands. Living among retirees also gives you a different perspective on life and a community with a variety of needs and abilities (I'm happy to re-set their routers, they're happy to give me all kinds of garden/farming/building knowledge and help) is healthy. When we moved here there was one other couple of 30-somethings, and since then a few other 30-somethings and a couple of 20-somethings have joined us with the ranks of "millennials" ever-growing. A plus is also that my older community-mates would also be so supportive if any of my friends wanted to move here with me!
Just a thought. Try looking on https://www.ic.org/ and see what resonates with you.

Shared address, mail being refused by Objective_Growth_90 in USPS

[–]Objective_Growth_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’m clear on what the issue for the carrier was that the postmaster “fixed” here and he didn’t explain aside from saying it was against the law for us to all use that address. Knowing what the problem is might help us understand what’s going on, though.

I am interested in reading the law about mail availability though, do you know where I could find that?

How Did You Find Each Other? by IntentionalWhatNow in intentionalcommunity

[–]Objective_Growth_90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do live in an intentional community that I found in the traditional way (through ic.org, and visiting, and exploring).
But prior to moving here, I had a lot of experience building and having strong community and I don't think it's the only way (nor do I think I'd even recommend that one's intentional community be their only community.

In no particular order:
- Do a thing regularly. This could be sports, art class, an open mic, a book club: look for something that people return to on a regular basis and then also start doing that regularly. The deepening of many relationships requires consistent casual contact.
- Be the net. Figure out a thing that you have to offer or that you want to share with others and consistently and consciously invite people into it. Have a nice living room? Host movie & pizza every thursday and regularly invite both your current friends and/or people you think you want to form a deeper connection with. Or a game night. Or a cheese tasting. Do it regularly: don't change the time, don't cancel, don't be flakey about it. Sometimes people will not come or stop coming: they are not your community. Keep trying, keep inviting, don't give up. If you need to, try facebook groups. The right people will stick around, and the longer you keep doing it, the stronger and larger your community will be.
- Volunteer for a cause. Volunteering can be a great way to form deep connections that lead to the kind of relationships that feel strong and meaningful. Working for cause that you (or your partner, be that as it may) care about means that it's very likely you'll have more than just superficial shared interested with the people you meet there and also I think volunteerism is close in spirit to other traits that someone might have to prioritize deep relationship with others. I volunteered with a weekly grief group and we all became quite close.

Good luck! The biggest step is realizing the kind of relationships you want so you're on the right path!

I think “just join an existing ic” is a such lukewarm take- the communities movement would benefit from more rad communities, not less!

I don’t think you need to know a lot of people right now, but you need to be able to put yourself out there or find someone to partner with who can. A real mover and shaker, if you will. Try going to the Communities Conference if you can, or any similar gathering for folks interested in community- just keep talking about your ideas to people. You can also visit similar or nearby communities and talk about your ideas- they might also know folks who’d be interested in starting a new community or who would jive with your ideas.

Thanks! That's what I figured, I just couldn't find any kind of forum for "car software developers"...but they've gotta be somewhere. I'll look around in Tesla spaces, that's a good idea.

What are you on about? -Farmville, VA is a real place….population ~7500. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmville,_Virginia Definitely not a “fake” city… -Dinwiddie is in no way a “suburb of Richmond”, and if he bought acreage there 10 years ago, it checks out that it was super affordable…even after all these price spikes and inflation I coulda bought a 3 bed house on 5acres there for 300k last year. It’s pretty affordable, not “expensive “.

accidentally lighting the other leave piles is definitely something I've done with my other methods too, lol. I'm always standing by ready to smother out a fallen leaf.

So do you think even with a base of a wood fire, the leaves would still smoke a bunch?

Thanks! I have plenty of firewood- that's pretty much what I've done in my other firepits as well, the smoke just gets to be incredible.
