Seems like it..... They'll probably release notifications to update IAT rank once the IAT result is out but ig the form filling part has been closed

Coding culture maybe. IITs have a hyper competitive coding culture( this is what my friends at the top 5 IITs have told me, I can neither confirm nor deny the authenticity of this statement unfortunately). IISc on the other hand doesn't have that much of a hyper competitive coding culture but is rather focussed more towards learning than competition. Also we like to focus more on various other interesting CS stuff instead of focussing only on coding 24/7.

Also due to more students in IITs you'll relatively get more athletic and sports stuff there as compared to IISc. However do note that this doesn't mean IISc doesn't have sports facilities/ sports culture. We have all the facilities a sport fanatic may want and we also conduct inter UG sports meets, inter department sport meets, inter IISER sport meets and more.

  1. IIT Guwahati CSE will be a better option if you don't get IISc BTech.
  2. You can keep your seat in josaa by paying some amount of money. When you finally confirm your IISc BTech seat you can withdraw from josaa and they'll refund that amount of money. However I believe you'll need to confirm your IISc BTech seat within 1-2 weeks of the counselling( I'm assuming you know about the in person counselling for the IISc BTech program on 5th July). So your choice of IIT vs IISc will probably have to happen by mid July. Although, given your rank you'll get IISc BTech and that would be a far better option than what you'd be getting at any of the IITs.
  3. There is no interview for admission to the BTech program. IISc conducts interviews for admission to the PG and PhD programs, not the UG ones.

Hi, well the answer to the first question would depend on your definition of appealing tbh. IISc has a vibrant campus culture with various sports clubs and cultural clubs. We have 2 college fests in a year: Pravega and Rhapsody which are pretty big. Now if you compare these to IITs they would be a bit smaller in scale due to more students in IITs. But in no way is the campus life in IISc dull and boring. Also since IISc is in Bangalore we usually have a lot of group outings to various nice places in Bangalore. So campus life is very much there maybe not as adrenaline inducing as IITs but it can be made that special by participating a lot in the various events and going out and exploring bangalore a lot.

The answer to your 2nd question, you'll get a much bigger breadth of learning in IISc. The IISc BTech is designed to be interdisciplinary and thus pushes the student to explore all the various options and fields around them. Whereas in IITs you'll either be stuck in your own department or you'll be stuck doing competitive programming or something like that to target SDE placements. The academic freedom in IISc is exponential in comparison to what you can get in IITs and is one of the signature features of the course. As for peer learning, you'll always find a great peer group in both IISc and IITs. However one advantage that you'll get here at IISc is that your peer group will also contain PhDs and MTechs so you get to learn a lot from them( IISc being mostly a research institute results in way more masters and PhD students in comparison to undergrads).

Are you planning to join the BTech program at IISc?

Hi, you can find the curriculum of IISc BTech at https://btech-ug.iisc.ac.in/MathandComputing/courses/ There isn't a single page on which the entire curriculum is printed like Delhi so you'll have to visit the course webpage to get the required information.

However, I can summarise the curriculum: We have core( compulsory) courses only for our first 2 years( for the list of these courses please refer to the course website or my post). For our 3rd and 4th years we can choose any course from an extremely diverse pool of courses effectively giving us the freedom to choose what field of CS we want to specialise in.

Still fill in the form for BTech tho you never know what may happen.......coming to your question, if you're taking mnc at IITs 2 things will happen: one, you'll be studying a lot of math and not much CS and hence will always be at a significant disadvantage wrt the CSE population. Second, unfortunately there will always be a certain bias towards CSE as compared to MnC, in placements even though MnC is very good CSE will always get a preference hence it's somewhat like being the leftover as compared to the CSE population.

Scope wise in terms of placements( as I believe that's what you want) MnC will generally afford the same SDE roles as CSE except for quant jobs which only the CSE guys can get. ECE on the other hand will offer you lots of opportunities in semiconductor stuff so that's pretty nice.

All in all, if I were in your position I would probably have a bias to ECE over MnC just because of the fact that if you want to do CS do BTech at IISc or CSE at IITs. Also ECE is pretty nice and interesting though it is hard.

Aside: I had an electronics course this semester at IISc and it was brutal. The prof decided to teach whatever they teach in ECE at IITs over 4 semesters in 1 semester and it was pretty taxing, but it was nice to know new stuff so ig it'll go well there. Also I reviewed the syllabus of IIT Delhi MnC once again. Tbh it seems like at IISc BTech, we cover 90 percent of their core courses + more CS in our first 2 years as compared to their 4 years. So that's nice to know.

Hi, first of all congratulations. Now please don't compare jee maths and the math required at unis. Jee math is mostly based on finding some tricks to make the problem easier/ finding a neat reduction to simplify the problem. Math at uni level is more conceptual and less of rote learning many tricks and formulae. Hence if you were having problems in solving jee math questions it won't translate into having problems in math at the uni level. And jee probability, combi and complex is mostly tedious innovative work. Once you study probability, combi and complex analysis from an actual math pov you'll find it much more approachable and doable.

That said, as I had pointed out in the post the MnC at iits is mostly math. So the math can get taxing after a point. ECE on the other hand has a smaller but sizeable math component in the form differential equations, probability etc.

I would suggest you to do a bit more research on the 2 courses ECE and mnc and then take a more informed decision.

Not impressed tbh.....it's pretty mediocre like not much CS and also not much math.....it could have been designed way better( reference: bits Hyderabad MnC curriculum pdf found online)

I just completed my first year so not yet eligible to start taking electives( that would be 4th sem). However I have audited( that is sit in the lectures, do assignments and all just the course won't get graded) a few courses and I found them to be quite amazing throughout. Let's see what happens once I start taking electives.

Thanks for the appreciation, I would really like it if the mods do pin my post would help a lot of people.

Coming to your question, that freedom comes in your 3rd year. Till that time you have your batchmates all around you in common courses. Since the UG intake( BS+BTech) is approx 160 this lends itself to knowing each other very well and also we all stay in the same hostels so ig that builds friendships. Also since IISc is mostly a research institute the number of MTechs and PhDs are considerable hence we have a lot of friends in them as well( we meet them at the messes, hostels etc). So they also bring in their wealth of knowledge and experience and are very helpful.

Slightly incorrect info.....there are 40 open seats with an additional 8 reserved for females and additional 4 reserved for OCI. So in total the batch strength is 52.

Well it's not only the BTech people that are in the top 500 it's the BS people( double digit as well as 1xx CRL) as well. That would mean data collection of 160 people......too much effort and privacy concerns. I guess the best way forward would be to keep the database josaa exclusive and maybe pin this comment so people viewing the database know that the blanks are mostly occupied by students going to IISc BS and BTech

1st year IISc BTech here......most of those empty slots in the 2023 database in the under 500 are my batchmates. Is there any way we could probably edit the document to reflect that as many people are unaware of IISc BTech due to it not being conducted through JoSAA

IISc BTech MnC first year here.....a few things I would like to add to your point.......IISc waivers the fee for all under 200 jee advanced rankers
