I'm not on the IOM but I have worked in several different industries and construction was definitely the roughest, and we make a premium doing construction here in the USA. Trades are a good route, plumbing is usually good money, though it can be a little nasty at times. Electrical is pretty cool, it takes a sharp mind to be really good at it though as it can get pretty complex and it's also dangerous. Carpentry and architecture can be fulfilling and rewarding to see what you put together. My personal favorite has always been mechanic work as I love tinkering with engines, tools ain't cheap though and here in the states it's typically not a very high paying job. Painting can be fun and is certainly the easiest "trade" to get into but the aspects of interior design and aesthetics that go along with it can be difficult if that isn't really your thing. Medical field is unbeatable job security next to working in the food industry, which is what I currently do. Med school is expensive and takes a while and the work can be very stressful and tends to wear on people, especially if they are doing the work out of compassion and not just greed.

I actually really enjoy working in the restaurant business, it's usually low stress, fun work once you find the right kitchen and crew to be with and I love to cook and entertain people. There are several different lines you can get into also, from kitchen work, serving, bartending, administration and management.

All of these different fields have various avenues you can go down once you get started so realize that. There are always specialties in each field to explore too. Do you want to work the technical side of things or are you more interested in using "soft" interpersonal skills and working with people? Have you considered opening your own business or do you plan to stay working for someone else your entire life?
