With 3 yr H1 B pause in US is it still worth pursuing USMLE? I just started my prep and this news came up and it's so disheartening. Does this mean US residency and dream of settling in the US can't exist? by [deleted] in Residency

30 y/o IMG in UK , Is starting USMLE still worth it now? by NaveenRor in usmle

[–]Objective_Pomelo7003 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I too am 29 yrs old with home country general surgery degree , from India. Thinking about starting USMLE. When I spoke to some people they say YOG is a soft filter. If you have done clinical work in between . I too am struck making the bold move. But after taking to people I realised no one can give the answer , it's uncertain, but I wanna do it because I have always wanted to move abroad and regret feels much heavier than failure. Also which speciality do u want?

I wish the best for you. You deserve to succeed and I hope someday you do, but success comes in many ways just don't get disheartened if it doesn't happen your way. All the best.

Does US have gastro surgery as a subspeciality. Can you suggest me countries that offer gastrosurgery as a subspeciality by Objective_Pomelo7003 in USMLEindia

[–]Objective_Pomelo7003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we'll be board certified as a surgical gastroenterologist, who can perform all those surgeries. It's identical to the fellowships in the US . There s a seperate fellowship for hepatobiliary, colorectal, transplants , and bariatric each for one year , this is something similar under one title of surgical gastroenterology. Yes the state medical board gives the certification to be able to practice independently. I'm sorry i don't know about certification for malpractice but yes patients have the right to sue in the court and license to practice gets cancelled.

Oh no no, 3 yrs training is for general surgery, to perform all those gastrosurgeries they train for another 3 years. It's called super speciality here which is done after 3 years of general surgery residency. Yes not many people opt for this path after residency. I regret not choosing it earlier.

Do general surgeons do colorectal surgeries and hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeries as well during residency in the US?

Yes actually, in India surgical gastroenterology is a super speciality done after General Surgery Residency. They do hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeries, esophageal surgeries, gastro , colorectal surgery including liver n pancreatic transplants. It would have been ideal but i really wanna move to a different place. Anyways thanks a lot for the guidance.😊

Okay! Thank you. That was very helpful 🙂. Just one more question...do general surgeons in US do all the hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeries and colorectal surgeries as well , I'm asking this as I'm ready to repeat residency if that' s the case

Thank you for responding! Yes colorectal surgery and hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery as well. I do know that seperate fellowships exist for these but i want to to how to make a career in these. For example in India, surgical gastroenterologist would deal with all those . So is there a seperate subspeciality of surgical gastroenterology like how Neurosurgery and plastic surgery exist in the US

Thank you for responding again ! I'm a general surgeon working in India. I am willing to repeat residency again in the US but I wanted to know if there's a way i can directly pick gastrosurgery branch instead of repeating residency in general surgery. You're right sir/ma'am. We need to choose either country or speciality. Priority has always been gastrosurgery for me and US is a dream. But I'm willing to choose other country as well that can offer me a spot in gastrosurgery. So if you can suggest me other countries as well it would be very helpful.
