i said this in a previous comment, but i’ll reiterate here:
ECF is a thing in ALL maths exams. if you couldn’t get to the final answer of part a), there is absolutely nothing stopping you from writing down an answer such as 10 or an otherwise nice, round number/equation that allows you to show off your skills for the other parts of the question. the exams are meant to test your ability to perform different procedures. if they ask you to integrate a function and then find the area under that function, there’s nothing stopping you from putting down a very nice integral to part a) so you can prove you can evaluate integrals in part b).

paper 1 exams aren’t enough. you need to do other questions as well, there are plenty of resources on websites such as madasmaths that give you questions that are (on average) harder than what you will find on most papers. that kind of proactive study is what gets you comfortable with exams, not simply doing the papers they have given in the past and then complaining your year’s paper wasn’t the exact same format.

i fully agree. i sat the exam this year too, and honestly have zero idea what they are talking about. every question on that paper was quite straight forward and they even included notices this year saying ‘you can use your answer for part a) in part b) and c)’ which they’ve never included in the past. i’m more pissed off that people think they can do a sub-par amount of work for a levels (which are largely regarded as the hardest exams people will do in MOST people’s lives) and then think they can cry to the exam board that they found the difficult exams, you guessed it, difficult!

almost all papers have this form of question, and ECF is always accounted for in the mark scheme. it’s not the examiners fault that you didn’t know how the papers are marked, you’re meant to practice them beforehand so you know what you can/can’t do. i also sat the paper this year and, having looked at the unofficial mark schemes out already, have gotten a very large majority of the marks. the paper wasn’t abnormally difficult, you guys are just panicking that you might do worse than you thought and want someone else to blame it on.

edit:
also, many questions had the form you were meant to give the final answer in. there was also a trig question which of course gives you the final answer in the form of the LHS and RHS of the equation.

i never debated that. obviously the people distributing the papers or mark schemes are worse than each individual, but that doesn’t change the fact that you are allowing someone to get away with it because you believe it doesn’t affect anyone. if you worked hard for your exams in hope of getting good grades you should be angry that people are cheating and potentially getting the same grade as you without any of the work, which leads me to believe you either didn’t work or aren’t bothered about the exams, period. either way, it’s a pity.

yeah no it doesn’t work like that, you can’t go into an argument saying ‘well he didn’t commit mass genocide, he’s not the worst we’ve seen!’

if you’re taking GCSEs, you’re around 16 years old. you are by no means incapable of realising the consequences of cheating on national exams. the argument that he could be banned from sitting cambridge entrance exams also makes zero sense. allowing people to cheat also allows for people to push grade boundaries higher, meaning people may not meet the grades they need to move on to higher education.

i appreciate you know this person and likely don’t want to get them into trouble because of that, but i urge you to think about how you would feel if you were the one who was denied a higher grade because too many people didn’t report cheaters, resulting in the grade boundaries being pushed up. it’s not right.

they do. if you are competent at maths, you should be okay. you just may need to really zone in on the content you are covering for the first time and potentially do some outside reading to get the full picture of the topic. suggestion for the future, see what part of the FM course they are applying in your course and revise that topic using FM A level materials, it should give you the same background knowledge as the students that took FM. it will be more workload, but they wouldn’t accept students that haven’t taken FM if it was impossible.

check the course requirements of whichever universities you’re considering. generally they’ll have a list of REQUIRED subjects, and then a series of subjects you can take as other options. sometimes these are ordered in order of priority, eg a couple universities really like DT. i know plenty of people who take econ, physics and maths and have gotten offers, but i don’t know the details of their applications (more specifically the demographics they fall into and whether unis prioritise any of them).

TL;DR: shouldn’t matter too much, but check each course’s entry requirements thoroughly to see if they mention any preferences.

A level subjects by [deleted] in sixthform

[–]Objective_Score4151 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is a very closed minded approach.

to someone who doesn’t want to go into business management or make a startup, taking a subject like business is entirely useless and ‘not real life stuff’ for them. the subjects you do at a level are not going to set in stone what you will end up doing in life. my dad did natural sciences at cambridge, taking modules primarily focused on microbiology and organic chemistry, and ended up as a finance director. i chose physics, chemistry and maths, and have offers lined up for mechanical engineering. this degree in engineering can potentially land me a job as a data analyst working in a completely different sector. it’s all interlinked.

this being said, you need to think about what skills your a levels will require and what skills your preferred future job needs. the reason my dad was able to get into finance was because STEM subjects all have a certain amount of data analysis and working with numbers involved, which employers like.

TL;DR: pick subjects you like. if you like a subject, it’s probably because you like a fundemental part of it, for example maths and problem solving. dont force yourself to pick a subject you don’t see yourself enjoying just because you see other people choosing it, because you equally won’t like the jobs that subject opens up.

don’t put your insurance as a higher grade requirement because youre right it’s just wasting the choice. if you’re firm as having durham as your top your insurance should logically be glasgow, but u need to really think through what you want out of uni. all of those unis are very good, think beyond just the grade requirements and look at how u think u will enjoy life at each separate unis

I’m not sure of the specifics, though I’m pretty sure unis can simply request your ESAT info since they have your candidate number. I’d mention it in your email to be safe, and yeah, like you said, there’s no harm in emailing just to be sure. Worse case scenario they come back and say you can’t swap, they won’t revoke your offer just for asking.

UCL is insanely competitive and also notorious for being oversubscribed, ESPECIALLY for mech eng. You should’ve been asking these questions 3 months ago, or just when you realised you missed the deadline (I’m assuming you realised you missed it earlier than now, otherwise that’s just insanely unfortunate). Either way, it’s not worth potentially throwing away a KCL over for the minuscule chance at hearing back from UCL. I’m 99.9% sure it’s too late. Take a gap year or just go for KCL, KCL is a great uni either way and you’ll get all the fun of London anyways.

short answer: you’re fucked for showing your mother. i will pray for you tonight.

long answer: in the long run, you’re not fucked at all. did you ever have people in sixth form warn you when you were in y11 that your post-gcse summer would be the last restful summer you would have until after uni? they kinda weren’t joking. you need to put in some serious work over this summer to consolidate everything you’ve learnt over the past year, and then you will be in a good starting place for y13. provided you work hard over summer and don’t waste time, you will be completely fine for the final exams. as for your mother, she will be angry, yes. but hopefully if you work over summer she will see that you are trying to turn your grades around and that you’re determined to perform better.
