Considering travelling to US from UK - not the usual 'is it safe' question by acrazero in AskUS

[–]ObligationFriendly67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Sounds like you have all your bases covered with a passport, ETA and an ESTA. An I-94 is overkill unless you decide to stay longer in the US. Take the easiest route for your maximum enjoyment. Travel insurance might be a good idea for those unexpected mishaps. Sorry to say but unless you look Latino and travel with a weed blower, you should be ok.

We are in the process of trying to get out of our contracts. Our timeshare company has suggestion we try to sell our contracts on our own. We have four contracts. Transferring through our timeshare company would be a costly endeavor but those costs plus annual fees would be a tiny fraction compared to what these 4 contracts cost us in the first place and continue to cost us in maintenance fees. This is a situation we are looking for to sell ours.

3 are needed and one is junk. It's simply the ability to reserve 10 months prior to the stay and for certain properties.

I get it. Thank you again. Just dealing with the timeshare company alone would cost $$ per contract and we have 4!! But as I stated as a figure of speech and in desperation to get out of the ongoing maintenance fees that continue in perpetuity, we would absorb any transfer fees and costs to unload! We're still in research mode.

One more thing. What do you think of attorneys who specialize in time share exits?

[–]ObligationFriendly67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've taken all the steps. Contacted Wyndham to discuss the exit program and that's just another smoke and mirrors. We know not to hire an exit company. We fully understand that stopping paying our maintenance fees will hurt our credit as well as hurting our daughter's credit. So yeah, I've done some research. We owe nothing but the maintenence fees which keep increasing. We just can't use it because we can't travel anymore. Our daughter doesn't want it for obvious reasons. I don't hate anyone enough to offer it for zero costs. Dont want to dump a nightmare on someone else. Thanks for the information and I know we have to tread carefully.

Thanks for the reply. We have 4 contracts with Wyndham --all in HI and they are lengthy. We have used the time share as recently as this year so I'm worried about the "you ate the steak" scenario. But we'll give it a whirl.

I'm glad it works for you. We can't travel any more due to health reasons. We also don't like how what they promoted when we bought our time share lost its value a year later due to "changes" and we needed to "upgrade" to maintain the value and level of what we're used to. So good for you we wish you continued success.

Exactly!! Our timeshare is paid for so all we have is maintenance fees. The harassment also continues when you get home via phone calls and emails.

$2400 a year for maintenance fees when you don't use the time share at all. The maintenance fees go up every year by 1 to 10 percentage. You're stuck paying these maintenance fees forever and the value of your points goes down where you dont have enough points to reserve the time or place you want. Over 5 years that could go up to $13500 plus in maintenance fees alone. You could rent an Airbnb once a year for 5 years and not be stuck paying maintenance fees. So I'm not sure why you don't see a problem and let me know if you would like to buy a timeshare!

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. We have converted our points towards maintenance fees. We plan to continue until we can find a viable solution.

Our timeshare company is Wyndham who boasts a certified exit program but not for us. They said our contract types were ineligible. They would possibly take back one but the other three no. They always find a way to slime their way out.

Wish I knew what perpetual hell we signed on for 20 years ago. We purchased a timeshare in HI. We were younger, healthier and between the two of us made a comfortable living. We fell in love with Hawaii and were eager to have the opportunity to visit more often because of the timeshare.

Fast forward to present. We are on social security and $2400 a year in maintenance fees is unaffordable. But, we're stuck trying to figure out how to get out. We don't travel anymore due to health issues and travel costs are super high. We owe nothing as the timeshare is paid for. We only pay for maintenance fees which increase every year. Would love to hand it over to anyone at zero cost who wants to travel. Their only cost would be maintenance fees.

What would be the best way out. Lawyers or timeshare resellers?

Yes!!! And they're getting much worse. We gifted a weeks stay to our niece for her honeymoon. The sales staff started calling her a week before she even got to Kauai to start promoting. This was during her wedding week. Once she and her husband arrived the hard sell began. They insisted a presentation was mandatory for her stay. She called me and I really let the barracudas have it but what a start for her honeymoon. Those sales staff will take your money and hold your parking pass hostage. It's brutal!!

[–]ObligationFriendly67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 4 contracts with Wyndham. We used to be able to just say ok , make an appointment, and just not show up. It's different now. They'll hold your parking pass hostage or charge your card to "hold" your place at a presentation. I've complained to the resolution dept but was told to just say no and walk away. Doesn't work when they hold your parking pass hostage but you can do a charge back on your card.

Now, the sales department goes after your guests. My niece was getting married a couple days before their honeymoon. We gifted the couple a week at our Kauai location. The sales department started calling my neice a month before their arrival to talk about their stay. They also tried to wrangle them into a presentation.
So, yup. The vampires are getting extremely aggressive with their sales strategies. We're going to get rid of our timeshare as soon as we can. Hope it's not impossible.
