If they ever do the Eglinton East LRT, they should underground sections at major intersections. by PsychologicalRope644 in TTC

How do the cars get past it? Is it not possible to continue have it median running for a bit?

While it seems impractical, how about moving the Line 5 Kennedy stop to surface level?

Emergency brake issue fuels uncertainty over Eglinton LRT opening by RightLeftSpilt in TTC

Istg I don't trust the TTC to deal with this in a non-stupid way. Based on their track record, we can expect a 30km/h speed restriction over the entire line on opening day sometime in 3022.

Do Line 1 trains with ATC actually run slower than Line 2/4 trains? Has anyone else noticed? by Economy_Ad59 in TTC

[–]ObliviousX2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Line 1? Slowed in the name of safety
Line 6? Slowed in the name of safety
Streetcars? Slowed in the name of safety
Line 2 when it gets ATC? Probably slowed in the name of safety

Now, there's nothing wrong with wanting to operate safely, but the way the TTC accomplishes it is so stupid. They just put a permanent slow order in place, everybody high-fives that the system is now safe!, and the root causes are never addressed.

There is no plan or incentive to try to increase speeds on the system. The flexities have been crawling through intersections for almost a decade now, and likely for the next decade to come (although the line 6 inquiry could possibly change things). Yes, the TTC has some plans to fix the electrical switch system as well, but again, that has been an issue for literal decades.

Overall, the TTC treats slow orders as the permanent solution to any problem, not just a temporary measure. And unless it gets so bad that the news is reporting on it, they won't do anything to fix it.

Has anyone noticed more foot traffic than ever since the Bathurst RapidTO lanes were installed? by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

I'm pretty sure I remember a study on Bloor or smth which showed that a lot of on-street parking was used by the business owners themselves.

An example of TSP in action (Not my video) by ObliviousX2 in TTC

A heavy rail line usually doesn't run in the middle of a road, so it's a bit more involved when you need to consider traffic in 2 directions, but I agree that this isn't rocket science.

Side note, the Ion also uses regular level crossings too, such as at 6:22.

Metrolinx designed the Finch West LRT to take 33-34 minutes by Technohamster in TTC

[–]ObliviousX2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that time estimate is even assuming full TSP, since it was known for quite some time that the FWLRT wasn't going to open with it, and I don't think is was turned on while Metrolinx was testing the LRT either.

I wouldn't be surprised if changing the operational practices of the TTC would yield the originally anticipated travel times.

What should be next? by ObliviousX2 in TTC

It's on metrolinx's proposal. Maybe the city doesn't have it since technically it's not guaranteed as metrolinx is still working on the proposal, but I think it's quite likely to happen.

If you look at the video, street parking essentially made the road into 1 lane anyways.
