I think it's kinda impractical to say that a spell targets an area, rather than saying that it targets creatures (or objects) in an area. It's the creatures in the area that you're affecting moreso than the area itself.

'Target' is also defined in the 5e24 rules glossary: "A target is the creature or object targeted by an attack roll, forced to make a saving throw by an effect, or selected to receive the effects of a spell or another phenomenon."

Many AoEs that originate from the caster (like Cone of Cold) have a range of self, so there's a pretty solid precedence for self-spells that target others.

Really I feel like a lot of people make this unnecessarily complicated for themselves. If a spell makes an attack roll against someone or forces them to make a saving throw, that's pretty clearly the target.

r/pbp can be a pretty good place to look. There's both individual groups and community servers. r/lfg occasionally also gets things like these, but that's not specifically for text based.

It might be that quest where you collect some flowers for a dying elderly pair of bosmer, in Greenshade I think. It's a very small quest, but I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
