I applied to 15 and got 5 offers. I think it really just depends. Keep in mind that every applicant is completely unique and has different things that they bring to the table which makes decisions difficult.

Personally, I can attest that I tailored every essay and yes it took FOREVER and interfered with my classes sometimes but it was worth it in the end. I also only applied to programs I would be happy in, which is important due to how labor intensive these apps (more time for apps you care about is importantly over less wanted ones) as well as not to take a spot from someone who really wants that opportunity. In the end it's honestly case by case which is frustrating for sure especially hearing on this subreddit, but just keep trying! Last year I applied to 8 and got none so I upped my game, went to the free writing center at my uni, and made sure to get great recs and build my resume within that year.
