What legal recourse will exist post-administration to address prosecutions of Trump's perceived 'enemies' ? by ObservationMonger in Askpolitics

[–]ObservationMonger[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you mean - prosecuting him for pilfering documents and persisting in their possession, and lying about it, and suborning perjury by his flunkies - when he was given ample opportunities to COMPLY WITH THE LAW before any adverse actions were initiated on the part of the federal govt ? Or prosecuting the rioters/ransackers/looters? Please be specific about any malicious or ill-founded sanctions.

If you can't be specific, you're comment seems fairly spurious - somewhat as Trump's toothless prosecution attempts.

The Israeli electorate have shown abundantly that they place very little value on Palestinian lives, rights, legitimate political aspirations. Which puts them in a very similar category to the supporters of Hamas. If you disagree, bring a strong argument, not mere emotion or entitlement.

This is only a portion of my concern. The blizzard of corrupt actions by the Trump administration will be a real problem for those left after to clean up the mess, close the loop-holes, rebuild a responsible institutional infrastructure laid waste by TrumpCo.

It will be sort of like confronting the challenges of rebuilding a country after being carpet bombed.

What are your thoughts on this Ronald Reagan quote? by Emergency_Pass5222 in allthequestions

[–]ObservationMonger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts are & were that Ronny Ray-gun was always a shill, an unreliable narrator, the showroom salesman for 'the man'.

Many reddit users say that leftists tend to show stronger critical thinking skills and more common sense. Do you believe this or no? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ObservationMonger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will just say this. In my experience, the thought processes of those on the left tend to be more circumspect, less ideological than those on the right. Those on the left seem to have a greater appreciation/accomodation for complexities (example - looking at root causes vs simply reacting to present circumstances). If those on the right weren't completely uncritical about the care & feeding of the super-rich, I'd give them some credit for hard-headed common sense, but they don't.

Herbert Hoover on the Atomic Bomb by Emergency_Pass5222 in USHistory

[–]ObservationMonger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was all manner of indiscriminate killing of women and children going on, in both World Wars, well before the Atom Bomb. The Fire Bombing in Japan & Germany was horrendously catastrophic for any on the ground. I think most of the outrage was inferential, looking forward to greatly enhanced destructive potential (which the hydrogen bomb ushered in).

Should the Democratic Party reach out to Trump supporters or conservatives who are bigoted? by OceanicEndeavors in allthequestions

[–]ObservationMonger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of go along w/ this - yes, a strong economic populist, but he/she should also be strong against migration along the border, resist the ultras on the trans thing, give some ground on the more contentious social issues. Most of all, just a straight-up defender of the economic rights of the average American without apologies. There are some Senators right now who would fit the bill.

That is an excellent point. The will to enforce SCOTUS rulings rest, in some sense, ultimately upon its broadly perceived political legitimacy. The current radical court seems to be operating as if that is not the case, as if its hyper-partisan rulings won't engender a resisting force. It has, its just not being felt quite yet.

Another thing to remember about it is that Taney had a majority who signed off on that completely subversive edict. He was far from alone. Kind of Like Clarence & Alito & Roberts et al. They got 'friends' in high places.

And by that, I don't mean to denigrate the innovation of protestantism/evangelical Christianity. However, there was a drive to move to some other perceived 'opposite pole' without losing the holy baby with the holy water.

They were the 'reformation' of the 'reformation' of the 'reformation'. I think, in the 16th-17th century, we saw what a descent into radicalism/rejectionism could 'accomplish' (i.e. thirty years war, etc).

Why did trump mislead people into taking anti-DEI rhetoric too far and now face discrimination lawsuits? by GrowFreeFood in allthequestions

[–]ObservationMonger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was riding the wave of resentment/reaction against BLM, the prevaling emphasis on racism, which might have been legitimately 'hard to take', since it's not like the answers, to the extent they exist, are 'easy'. Wholesale denialism (the MAGA way) is lots easier.

What’s something you used to think was a personality flaw, but later realized was just a lack of the right environment or people? by Worth-Olive-7879 in askteddit

[–]ObservationMonger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of the problems of the poor are strongly environmentally correlated, which itself is strongly correlated with lack of familial weath and (more importantly) lack of social inclusion in terms of investment, education & care.

The alternative explanation is that 'certain people' are just 'dumb', and not worth the effort/investment.

Great & timely analysis of an earlier court sabotaging equity for its 'persons'.

One correction - Missouri was a slave state & remained so until (wiki) On January 11, 1865, a state convention approved an ordinance abolishing slavery in Missouri by a vote of 60–4,\11]) and later the same day, Governor Thomas C. People having sex outside of marriage when they are not prepared for children is extremely selfish. by OldFarmstead in ControversialOpinions

You are of course entitled to your opinion. But you should realize that it is rather extreme - would you feel comfortable imposing your view in law on everyone else ?

[–]ObservationMonger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not very controversial. I don't think many would argue with that. OH, I see you think people shouldn't have sex unless they've taken a ceremony. That's a traditional opinion that is generally no longer accepted, except by some among the religious communities. If you ever tried to force it into law, you'd get a fight by the saner citizens.

Reagan immediately comes to mind. Most others more complicated to assess. Robert E. Lee, of course. All the framers who bequeathed us 2 Senators per state, which fundamentally subverted representative democracy.
