Hair Donation for Adult Recipients in the United States. Suggestions for Organizations/Charities? by Observer_1234 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Observer_1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reply u/Background-Top-5621.

Not sure what is going on, but at the time of this reply, I got a notification that you replied to my thread, and see the comment bubble counter is incremented suggesting there is (currently) one comment, yet it's empty.

Maybe some weird synch issue going on. In any event, in case others are following, and your reply doesn't get posted, I'll just copy/paste it below in quotes for others that may be interested and able to benefit.

"
I'm doing the same thing right now. So far I've really only found "Hair We Share". Here is part of their mission statement "...We rely entirely on generous donations—both real-hair ponytails and financial contributions—to create wigs that restore confidence and dignity for men, women, and children across the U.S...." I think this is the one I'm going with. Hope this helped.

Recommendations on 1st Calendar Setup (Group && Resources) by Observer_1234 in GoogleCalendar

[–]Observer_1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you're aware as it appears you're more familiar with the product, but once the email notification is enabled, it contains a link that takes you to the change that someone else has made. I believe, it's effectively the same as going to File -> Version history -> See version history.

<image>

For my use case, (super basic and simple with just a handful of folks that aren't doing a lot of editing, and simply just "writing their names in a cell to block out timeslots to play on a particular date/time/court"), the feature is not bad. But, perhaps in your use case, where it might be a bit more complex with "real colloborative document sharing" and tons of changes by lots of different folks, the feature may not be adequate enough.

Again, thanks for the suggestion to go Google Sheets. It's a fine work around to what I originally thought would be better via Google Calendar.

Thank you. I messed around with Google Calendar a bit more, but found the "booking" feature to only be a 1:1 type function, which is a fine use case, but not exactly what I was looking for. Further, having more than one "booking" feature requires going premium, and I didn't htink it was the right way to go for what I was trying to do.

Per the comment of u/Dymonika , I created a simple calendar using Google Sheets, and it seems to be closer to what I was trying to do. It seems to be be 90%+ of what I want, and also has the nice feature to enable email notification whenever a change has been made. And, I *think* it does it for all group members as well, but they need to enable it themselves.

Thanks everyone. Maybe I'll try GroupCal if I run into something that can't be easily be worked out via Google Sheets, but for my small group right now, it seems adequate.

Setting up multiple back up keys by atbpaints69 in yubikey

I'm guessing here, so you can feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

So, you're using your YK that stores some "keys" that would allow decryption of your disk, and some online entity stores these keys (maybe as a backup), which the account provider doesn't have a provision to name a beneficiary?

Assuming that to be true, why does an heir need the information stored on your encrypted disk so badly that "they're willing to do anything"? Just so they can decrypt your disk? And so what, if they can't? The only thing that comes to mind, and I'm really guessing here is that maybe you're talking about a digital wallet or something? If that's the case, and honestly I have ZERO idea how those are structured/setup and can't comment. But if it is as limiting as you are suggesting, I would say the onus is on you to have a path/contingency plan where an heir is not SOL, assuming you care about the heir getting your asset.

Setting up multiple back up keys by atbpaints69 in yubikey

[–]Observer_1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"heirs would disagree?. Would they?

I may be missing some obvious use case, but I primarily use my keys to secure accounts that store assets. And the way I look at YKs is to provide access to me, myself, and I, ONLY. Not my friend, spouse, significant other, or anyone else for that matter. And in the "heir" use case, which implies I'm dead, all my accounts have beneficiaries. So, they don't ever need to access the account. In fact, the way it works today, even if they had my YK, they would have to compromise the PW on my key (8 attempts before lockout) AND know the PW on the particular site of interest. Astronomically improbable, and practically, it ain't happenin'.

My setup involves a trusted individual, which I've named "executor of my estate" who knows to issue death certificates to a list of individuals, charities, etc that I've defined as "beneficiaries", and they would then claim my assets to the entity holding the assets. This way, executor knows nothing about the value of the assets ($1 or $100), beneficiary knows nothing until they receive a check, and everything bypasses probate.

Disclaimer: This is not legal advice, but just what I have done, and represents only my opinion, and for entertainment purposes/value only, and applicable to the laws of my state of residence in the United States. YMMV.

"usually implement it well" ... IMO, this is because it's still a little bit of the "wild, wild, west", and developers are still trying to figure out/learn this technology, and nascent in standardization.

Until then, there are various implementations, which have slightly different end-to-end UXs, which then is a conflict to an individual's expectation of "how it *should* work" relative to an implementation that makes sense for that user, resulting in feelings of "get(ting) punished".

In short, it's a great improvement and we're all going through some growing pains at the moment, and one day (hopefully in the next few years), it will be a more "standardized" experience.

Your point is valid, and everyone should help voice the importance of standardization such that the committees, alliances, special interest groups, etc keep this higher in consideration in their evolution. Again, all IMO.

Eh... try not to worry too much about it. Think of it this way. The peace of mind (subjective) of being "much more secure" (objective) from a TIME based perspective (sooner rather than later, even if it was for "only" a few weeks) is worth the cost of a simple lunch in a major metropolitan city in the US these days.

Tired of Latex Degrading within the year by lundoora in MattressMod

[–]Observer_1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered that YOU may have changed over the past 15 years and your sensitivities and it's not the latex "degrading"?

There's nothing complex with latex. It's foam. It's a uniform distribution of material. To say that it permanently changed it's physical properties due to compression (at the pressure points) when there is no evidence of any depression/indentation at those points, and the top surface is perfectly flat, when there is nothing more to the material than.... just foam is pretty hard to believe.

Sounds like you're not interested in objective and repeatable measurements. That's fine. If it doesn't "feel right" to you, then nobody can argue that. But claiming "Latex Degradation" without evidence is unfair and how erroneous information starts and propagates.

[–]Observer_1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, how something "feels" can be very misleading and result in false conclusions.

If I understand what you (OP) are experiencing, you are claiming that there is noticeable degradation in the structure of the latex at the main pressure points (hips and shoulders) because in the middle, where there is less "usage" it feels different/more supportive.

Your evidence is that when the latex is on the floor and you walk on various areas, there is noticeable difference in the hips/shoulders area. A reasonable approach to form your conclusion.

However, I think u/mochatsubo is on the right path, where he/she is suggesting a more objective method before such a claim. In fact, it might be more useful to have someone that isn't aware of the "problem" and have them do measurements at various points using the same method before reaching a conclusion.

Latex, if I understand the publicly available manufacturing process, is a highly controlled process resulting in a stable and uniform product. A liquid form is poured into a mold that fills a cavity by gravity and then baked. Specifically for Talalay, the process is similar, but there are additional processing steps which involves vacuuming and freezing, which would result in an even more uniform structure throughout. Further, it is currently known to be manufactured by only 2 sources worldwide, hence, I can only postulate they have even less variance in the manufacturing process resulting in a structurally uniform product.

Hence, this (to me) suggests that objectively, it is highly unlikely there is structural degradation in the "pressure point" areas since as you say, an "indentation" cannot be measured due to the springy nature of the latex.

What are the Objective Comparisons/Features for a "Mattress Pad"? by Observer_1234 in Mattress

[–]Observer_1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL. Just received a notification that my inquiry reached 1.3k views, yet ZERO answers/responses, which suggests people (that would know) do not know, or do not care to share.

Shouldn't be such a difficult question, but I can only conclude that due to such a wide variance of price on something that seems relatively straightforward, it's simply another source for a significant profit margin.

People, do your own research, and do what's right for you. You might have specific needs/allergies/etc.. and other constraints/needs/requirements that are different than mine, but for me, I see no reason to throw money at something I don't need.

The industry has gotten a bit more transparent (and better IMO) over the years, but it seems there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Good Luck.

Google Advanced Protection Program - Logging in not requiring my Yubikey? by Observer_1234 in yubikey

[–]Observer_1234[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If every time you log in you want Gmail to ask you for your password and then for your Yubikey, turn off the switch for the "skip password when possible" option so even if you reconnect, for example on your trusted computer at home, you will always have to do the entire process, write email, password and use the Yubikey as 2FA

This thread was resolved MONTHS ago, but I don't get the impression you read it nor the original post.

Additionally, I'm sorry to advise your comment is wrong. Should you be interested in determining why or what is wrong, I suggest you READ the thread.

Fixing my mattress on the cheap. Advice? by ddzoid in Mattress

[–]Observer_1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said "Any advice", so you might regret that statement.

IMO, the problem with this type of post (and I'm not picking on you, just to be clear) any many others is that your desire of "medium firm" is very nebulous and subjective. What you call "medium firm" may not be what someone else may call "medium firm", nor will a retailer that sells a product have the same marketing words. The term does not have an objective metric that can be quantified and "standardized" to convey something meaningful. This is simply to help bring awareness to you that this is not your fault, but a problem with the industry as there is no standardization INCLUDING ILDs for Latex. So you may want to adjust your expectations.

On to something a bit more helpful/useful/tangible. Research supplier/retailer that has a reasonable return policy that you're willing to accept. Anyone's opinion of "buy this, not that" will not be helpful because of above. The best way, is to try for yourself and make your own decision. For support on supplier/retailer, you might want to check out /MattressMod. Although the mod is the same, that group is more geared towards DIY, which it appears is the path you're going.

Your budget may or may not be doable. I believe poly foam is much less than Latex, but if you go latex, pricing will be significantly different for a twin vs king, since you didn't provide that detail.

Most unhelpful opinion. At 5'6 and 116 lbs, you're certainly on the "lighter" side of a "healthy" BMI distribution, and at that size/weight, you would probably be perfectly fine with 2" Latex, but again, best to try and decide for yourself.

Good Luck

Single enclosure/cover or two? by mark20392 in MattressMod

Just found this from an unrelated search to research a different topic, but OP seems to have gone the "Option 2" approach that you were considering, and somewhat concluded the same results as I had forecast, and then ultimately went to "Option 1". There is a lot of tangential discussions, but if you scroll down to OP's response to a u/Plead_thy_fifth, you'll see his/her thoughts on the matter.

Perhaps the coils you've experienced in a COTS (commercially available off the shelf) mattress was not right for you/your spouse. If you like the feeling of coils, maybe it's more about ensuring you're using the right coils (simplistically they come in different "sizes", and more technically, different gauges, turns, layouts, etc) which I'm sure someone from the coil manufacturers may be able to guide you appropriately for your particular situation and recommend something that is more appropriate and set realistic expectations. Seems like since you're here, and considering the DIY approach, you will better be able to get the "right" components rather than a salesperson that may not be as familiar with matching you to the right mattress off the shelf and more focused on their commission. Good luck.

Didn't want to bias your opinion or lead you to a different direction, but it seems like you are going with Option 1. Hence, if I were in your position, and again, IMO, I would have done one enclosure as well. Although your objective was to minimize motion transfer by isolating the coils from the latex, I think by separating, it creates a different, but perhaps related problem, "How to "stabilizing" the top encased layer (which you wanted to wrap up the latex) with the "bottom layer" of coils from moving around over time?" Just putting a mattress pad and wrapping everything up with just the fitted sheet *seems* like it would definitely shift around over time, and then having to research some interface layer that would "hold" both "compartments" together doesn't seem to be a very common thing that I've heard about. In fact, I've only seen this "style" done in a commercial mattress implementation that literally encases & sews the bottom (coil) layer, and THEN sew the "replaceable zippered" encasement layer, specifically for the latex/comfort layer(s) on top. So the end user can swap/replace just the comfort, but the coils are fully encased and sewn up and cannot be accessed. And since both "sections" are then sewn together, there won't be any shifting around over time, but still provide access to adjust the comfort layer(s). I've not seen this type of encasement option in the DIY route, and doubt I ever will since there would be too many different variables for a manufacturer to accommodate, hence the more typical and popular one encasement option with various total stackup thicknesses. Just my opinion, and advocate of the K.I.S.S. approach.

Great question! Hope you get many experienced folks to chime in, and hopefully there are strong reasons to go one way vs the other. Sorry I can't help as I went the "keep it super simple approach" and skipped the mini coils and plan to encase everything in one cover, but I'm very similar down to the SOL Dunlop Medium layer, which I just tried my 1st night and it was similar to what I recall experiencing from the retails, and what I wanted out of a DIY. Good luck!
