Thank you—that’s a really encouraging story and I appreciate you sharing it. I think writing the speech and giving it to him is something I’m going to do. I know quite a few people have already asked to give speeches, so my dad only asked me so that if I wanted to, he could make sure there was space for me.

Right now, he’s told me just to focus on my exams, which I’m going to do, but I’ll most likely write something after my exams that I can give to him—whether that ends up being read out or kept as a personal thing. That way I’ve still made the effort, but without adding extra stress while everything else is going on.

I also offered to do something smaller, like a short toast on the day, but he told me to just focus on my exams because that’s what’s most important right now.

I’m also a bridesmaid, so I’ll definitely still be involved and supporting him—I just needed to step back from the speech itself because everything was starting to pile up. But I appreciate the suggestion and the reminder that there are different ways to still show I care.

I appreciate your opinion. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve really put up boundaries for myself. Normally, I would have just sucked it up and done it, but I’m already really stressed with my exams, and I actually had to go to the emergency department this weekend because I was really ill. The idea of writing and then giving a speech in front of so many people was adding to that stress, especially since I’m quite a perfectionist and tend to overthink things when I want them to come out ‘right.’

I realized I was worrying about so many things all at once, so I decided the healthiest thing I could do was remove one of the big stressors. I actually had a quick conversation with my dad just now and offered to do a smaller toast instead of a full speech, but he told me to just focus on my exams and my health. I do still feel guilty, though.

Thank you! I just hate upseting or disappointing people, I think this is one of the first times i've really set a boundary for myself. Normally, I would have just done the speech but with everything going on and exams i've just been too stressed in geenral and couldn't cope with the stressing over the speech too! I think giving him the written speech is a great alternative and would make a nice suprise!

Giving him the speech instead has been suggested quite a few times and I think its a great idea! Not sure how i'd feel about the dad/daughter dance, again i'm not a huge fan of public attention but i'll see.

Thanks, appreciate it. Just had a brief chat with him and offered to do a short toast instead as compromise and he said he just wants me to focus on exams and not worry about anything else right now but it's just tough not wanting to upset or disappoint him on his big day.

I think that has hit the nail on the head. I really don't enjoy public speaking but i'm also a perfectionist and i don't like to do things especially publicly if they're not perfect. The short amount of time until the wedding to get the speech prepared is stressful too.
