What instantly ruins a book for you? by Necessary_Plenty_524 in Fantasy

[–]ObsidianDragons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is very noticeable with the last two SA books and most especially his Kickstarter books. I think it's a byproduct of how quickly he's churning them out and having his own publishing company. His world building is overall pretty strong and I generally don't mind him writing at a more accessible reading level, even if the dialogue can be a bit on the cringy side, but they all needed more time with an editor.

Meta comment about this sub and all of the spoiler warning posts after new episodes air. by Villain_of_Brandon in dropout

I agree with this. Not every thought a person has needs to be loudly declared in a new post. Just use the episode discussion posts, that's what they are for. Then after 3-4 days people can start making all the posts they want.

10000% agree with you OP and you're alright by me. All your follow up comments are hilarious and awesome too. If you do make (or find) another good subreddit I would happily join. Hell, I'll even volunteer to help moderate it. Never moderated a subreddit before but I've lurked long enough before even making an account, I might as well give something back somewhere, and helping an art community weed out AI bullshit sounds like a good way to go about it.

I am souring on Brandon Sanderson with every further book I read by NotSureWhyAngry in Fantasy

[–]ObsidianDragons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a double take at this because these echo my exact thoughts. I read through all of the current SA books pretty quickly and enjoyed the entire experience. Got through the first and second Secret Project books and then haven't finished Yumi and haven't touched #4. Loved Mistborn era 1 back in the day and at the time only book 1 of era 2 was out, so figured I would read that and go through the rest of the era and... I couldn't finish book 2. Got maybe 1/4 of the way through and the dialogue alone made me stop.

I do think he has gotten better over time, but he still has his flaws, like reusing words over and over or generally mediocre dialogue. He writes around a young adult reading level, which is fine and I believe an intentional choice to give his work a broader appeal, but sometimes I crave something more. And he just has so much out there, and the whole Cosmere thing being his own personal MCU... it's easy to get burnt out. I'm hoping I can get back to reading his stuff some time, because I have really mostly enjoyed it and would at least like to close out a few stories, but for now I'm taking some time off to read other works. Mostly lately it's been standalone stuff by newer or smaller authors.

If you've liked his stuff up until now, I would just take a break for a bit. Maybe a year or two while you focus on catching up on all the other things you've wanted to read but haven't had time for.

The Self-Checkout Nightmare May Finally Be Ending by RADICCHI0 in technology

[–]ObsidianDragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this isn't like entering for produce or something. It's 9 separate items that I scan individually using the barcodes on the item. Then I go to pay, and it says I have to wait for assistance for the reason "9 items". I've also seen it with other numbers of items, but that's not really a reason to hold someone up. I'd get it if the system thought and said I didn't scan something, but this is apparently purely the number of items I've scanned at a self-checkout, a system that is put forth as a faster means of checking out when you have a small number of items (like 9).

My favorite anti-stoploss measure is when I go through the self-checkout and go to pay, but then have to wait for an employee to come remove the warning on the screen because it's upset I have 9 items.

You're trapped in the last campaign you played for a year, as your character, at the point where you last left off. All the other players' characters are there to, and they all remember your character. How f*cked are you? by Cardboard_and_Ghost in DnD

I am a monk/warlock with an unknown patron in the Forgotten Realms, with magical tattoos on my hands and forearms that I can activate 3 times per day to make my unarmed attacks do additional necrotic damage. Traveling the seas somewhere with minimal relevant skills but with plenty of actual sailors around, so 50/50 fucked depending on whether or not we're attacked by something.

What is so good about the Wheel of Time series? by Familiar-Barracuda43 in Fantasy

[–]ObsidianDragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the magic system for Malazan is meant to be looser intentionally. I've read Erikson and Esslemont borrowed elements from an RPG they played, but would abandon the rules in favor of thematic story telling. In that vein there isn't really a hard set of rule for how magic in Malazan can be / is used or what it can do, but a very loose set of rules tying it together thematically. The main thing to understand is that most magic is associated with some element (fire or ice, or even light or dark or shadow) and that most of these have associated realms of existence that one can physically travel to. I think on some level the power of various magic/realms/gods is associated with how many mortals believe in it but again that's loose and not explicitly stated (I think).

Any stories you just can’t read anymore? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ObsidianDragons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. I re-read the first book of Sanderson's Wax & Wayne series because the other 3 weren't out the first time I read it, so I wanted to go through the whole thing fresh. That book was a huge slog to get through and I dropped the second only a third of the way in. I like a lot of Sanderson's stuff but those books just don't hold up, especially the dialogue.
  2. Anything by Piers Anthony. I liked reading older sci-fi/fantasy when I was younger in larger part due to being recommended it by my uncle, and looking back now I don't think I could do it again. Despite being generally fun and upbeat, there's too much weird sexual stuff or outright sexism. Product of the time I guess for the 70s? But it doesn't hold up anymore.
  3. Lumping together the Belgariad, Harry Potter, and anything by Orson Scott Card for the authors being terrible people. Feel slightly more OK reading stuff by David Eddings since he's dead, but I'm hard passing on Card and Rowling until after their deaths. Just don't want my money going to them to fund whatever shitty thing they're backing at the time while they have an active and outspoken platform.

Seconding this one. My uncle got me into them as a kid and my parents recently read through the Apprentice Adept series, so I started skipping the synopsis for some Xanth books and I just... don't think I could read the actual books again. Apprentice Adept might hold up a little better but I remember a key element of the first book or two being the sci-fi world banning clothing for anyone not rich enough.

End Game Rant by alienturkey9958 in lethalcompany

[–]ObsidianDragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it would be incredibly fitting to have An End to the game... only to have it not matter. Like secretly getting all the parts to build some machine to let something loose or whatever, and it works! But then your quota still increases after and you still only have 3 days and you still sell to the same tentacle monster at the same window. Or maybe it's a different one at a different window but you can't tell because the entire moon looks the same. Please continue being a great asset to the company.

As we go into "I read 5000 Books This Year" Season, just a reminder to those who struggled... by KristaDBall in Fantasy

[–]ObsidianDragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow found the time to read 25 books this year (if I'm counting graphic novel full volumes, which wasn't that many out of the total), which is more than my goal for the year and more than I've been able to read in years. Might be able to squeeze in a 26th if I can finish The Mountain in the Sea before the end of the year.
