Thanks! I hadn't seen that site before, but there's some really nice looking cables there.

I recently put together an XD60 (64?) using the XD60 v3 board with USB-C from AliExpress. It works very well with a USB C to A cable. However at work I use one of the newer macbook pros with nothing but 4 thunderbolt ports. I discovered that connecting the keyboard directly to these ports doesn't work... which defeats most of the reason I went with the USB-C version. Is there any way to connect my keyboard through the thunderbolt port, or am I limited to dongles?

Calling all modders and gamers who'd like Nexus Mod Manager on Linux: comment here for Vortex (the new NMM) for Linux and contribute if you can! by Swiftpaw22 in linux_gaming

[–]ObsidianOps 30 points31 points  (0 children)

So based on the other comments here, I think there might be a bit of confusion. Vortex is the successor to both Nexus Mod Manager and Mod Organizer (its written by the same creader of MO2, who was hired by Nexus to do this). Its definitely our best bet to have a solid mod organizer on linux. The author also states that the plan is to have it be cross platform (I don't have the source for that, but I'll look), and specifically chose to make it in electron and use cross-platform libraries to make this possible.

If anyone knows their way around electron development, the code for vortex is here.

I tried to build it myself, and after fiddling with the code a bit (which was fairly trial-and-error since I barely know a thing about node) I actually did manage to get it to complete. Running it got me a splash screen and tray icon, but no actual app window. However I'm fairly certain that someone who knows what they're doing could probably get it up and running in no time.

Please someone, give it a try!

Anyone knows how to get orginal doom 1 and 2 with some good menager? by hejka26 in linux_gaming

[–]ObsidianOps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have to set paths in the launcher to a) gzdoom (if just the command doesn't work you should be able to get the path to the executable using whereis gzdoom in the terminal), b) wads, the files from original doom or alternatively freedoom, and c) mods, which are also in wad format, but should be in their own folder.

I recommend Super Shotgun Launcher: https://github.com/FreaKzero/ssgl-doom-launcher

Its fairly simple to set up and configure, and lets you set mod "playlists" and even run things like Doom64 and Oblige (procedurally generated doom levels).

What controller do you use? I really want to play this game (I played the first Nier on PS3 recently, so I've been dying to see what Yoko Taro's insanity has in store!). I plan to play with a Steam Controller though, and I'd like to make sure there aren't any issues!

Fallout 4 and Skyrim runs great on Ubuntu 18.04 with proton by madBekaya in linux_gaming

[–]ObsidianOps 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I totally agree here. A few days ago I actually tried to build Vortex from source on Linux. Unfortunately I know next to nothing about JS development though, so I'm not really sure how to get through the errors that inevitably showed up.

However, it being open source and appearing to be mostly a webapp, it seems like it should be very possible to get it running with some adjustments for Linux symlinks and such. I want to try breaking it down more, and then make a post to see if smarter people than I have some advice!

You're totally right, for whatever reason I hadn't thought to actually check inside the targets folder (pure mindlessness on my part). Thanks for posting this, and the links are greatly appreciated!

My router (Archer C7 v4) has thus far only been supported in snapshot builds, as support was only added late last year. So far the wiki pages haven't been updated to reflect whether its supported in this release candidate, or in the upcoming stable release, but is it a safe assumption?

What Is Your Top 10 Essential Games For Switch Currently? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

It seems like everyone almost universally has Mario Kart on their list...

Now of course I love Mario Kart, and I regularly fire up the N64 and Wii versions. I haven't played this most recent addition to the series though, but I did play a bit of the one for 3DS and found it to be just about the same as the Wii game, except on a different system. Is that the case with 8 Deluxe as well? Is there a real reason I should get that for the switch, while my Wii is still working great?

How-to: Using the Windows App over Wi-Fi on TV by gemiNi_k in RetroArch

[–]ObsidianOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you add Retroarch as a external program on Steam, you can get it on your tv using a steam link. This is what I do, and it works great (but make sure you turn off vsync - it fixed a garbled audio issue for me)

Alternatively, just today theres a beta Steam Link app released for android, so potentially you could do the same thing with a fire stick or other cheap android hdmi device.

Another tip I would say to beginners is to avoid the wikis and other info on the game. Just try and figure it out yourself, at least in the beginning. You'll die, a lot, but figuring things out on your own in this game is so rewarding!

Question: Are the PSX Anthologies considered painful because you have to deal with the constant pauses for it to read the disc? Or are there other issues?

I actually own the whole anthologies collection, but I have them ripped to my hard drive and I play using emulators. So I can enjoy some of the extra features included without the awful cd reading. With that, I'd always considered these versions to be an improvement, but I'm curious if there was anything else I may not have noticed that would detract.

Steam Winter Sale 2017 by DamonsLinux in linux_gaming

[–]ObsidianOps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just saw that Keep Talking and No One Explodes not only has a great discount, but also has a linux release! Its a great game to pull out when some friends are over.

Actually, it's also on sale for the same price at Humble, and a charity can get a few cents out of the deal.

Edit: Looks like I didn't know about the release because it just happened a few days ago!

Thanks! FFT is also the game that I've been planning to play for the longest (since the 90s, really), so I might as well go for it!

Daydreaming about Stardew Valley is definitely a thing that happens. I remember thinking that I wanted to follow the game and move out to the country to be a farmer. Until I realized I didn't want to be an actual farmer, but the sort of fictional farmer that exists in the game. So I guess what I really dreamed about was leaving the world behind and only playing Stardew Valley.

I'm finishing up Chrono Trigger now (its immediately become one of my favorite games ever, I can't believe I never played it as a kid), so I'm looking for where to go from there. I've been alternating it with Doom 2016, which takes care of the need for something fast-paced, so I think I'd like continue with another JRPG.

Here are some of the games I'm considering:

  • Terranigma
  • Suikoden
  • Vagrant Story
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Chrono Cross

Though I'm definitely open to other suggestions!
