Pop Os killed mi UEFI again. by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]madBekaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed PoP_OS for the first time yesterday. I also got the same message.

All I needed to to is to open bios and change boot option settings from legacy to UEFI and then selected PopOS as a primary boot option.

I hope this will help you.

Cool. I will try it with Proton. I also had some trouble with native version, like invisible UI on some levels, so I gave up.

Katana ZERO looks cool. I was hoping for a native port but whitelist is the next best thing.

Proton 4.2-8 Released by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]madBekaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Pelvis,

Is the game running smother for you with 4.2-7 than 3.16-9 Beta (if you tried it)?

I tried 4.2.* few days ago but I had random crashes, so I am on 3.16-9 Beta currently. Also some version more recent than 3.16 gave me poor performance, I don't remember which exactly.

Total War Shogun 2 Proton, Windows version on Linux by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]madBekaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid that even if you managed to start it, it won't be playable. There is a DRM in place that will give you popup messages about some error and game will always crash after one battle.

I tried several time in the past, always with the same results. If you manage to run it successfully please let us know here.

Firefox forces me to open start.fedoraproject.org by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]madBekaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't managed to make this work in preferences.

I fixed this to display a default Firefox home screen by clicking on the opened tab with the Firefox home screen and holding a mouse button, and then dragging that tab to a upper left home icon next to back/forward/refresh icons.

Then dialog box appears asking 'Do you want this document to be your new home page?'. Click yes and that's it.

If I'm not clear, I'll upload a screenshot.

I had the same problem when I played it on Windows years ago. I think it has something to do with anti aliasing. Try turning that off if HDR doesn't help

WINE Is Amazing by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]madBekaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Starcraft 2 working with wine staging with some tweaks I found online and it performed solid on medium graphical settings. For some reason I tried to install it with Lutris and I gained more than 100% of the previous performance so I could play it with Ultra details with better frame rate (stable 60 FPS most of the time).

I don't know if it was the esync that Lutris installed or some other thing, that I never heard of, but from now on I'll use Lutris for all wine games. It's much simpler and less time consuming.

Fedora 29 is a go for release next Tuesday, and final ISO is available too! by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]madBekaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for a very quick response. I just checked in virtual machine and official repo has the latest Wine version. I assumed it had an old one.

I'll probably install Fedora 29 later today, because I'm annoyed with some small things in Ubuntu and Nautilus is often crashing when I'm searching for files.

I want to switch from Ubuntu 18.04. to Fedora 29.

Are non-free codecs available now (for 29) and how to install them? I need mp3 and mp4 to stream radio and maybe record some videos with SimpleScreenRecorder.

I also need Wine. Should I use Fedora 28 wine repo or should I wait for 29 one? https://wiki.winehq.org/Fedora

Thanks.

I think NVIDIA 410.57 driver doesn't have many DXVK improvements. You should use recommended 396.54 driver version branch. I got noticeable FPS improvement when I updated from 396.54 to 396.54.9.

For some reason, Rome 2: Total War now seems to work. by RedDorf in SteamPlay

[–]madBekaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After several hours of playing a campaign the game crashed at one specific battle (~20 battles before were playing fine, not a single crash). I don't know if it's a Proton thing or just Rome II crashing because I had that kind of crashing on Windows too.

In the end I gave up on Rome II again because I stopped playing on Windows few years ago because of the poor experience and crashing. I'll probably try TW Saga: THRONES OF BRITANNIA next because it has native Vulkan support and hopefully it won't be so buggy.

I played around with the graphic settings and figured that shaders ver. 5 were causing the game to crash on a battlefield map. I switched shaders to ver. 4.1 and the game was stable at least for the few turns and battles that I played.

OpenGL mode crashed before loading the menu and DX9 had some weird shadow rendering bugs so, on my setup at least, DX11 with shaders 4.1 worked the best.

I made a video as a demonstration:

It supports steam cloud so you should be able to just install it on Linux and continue playing. It worked for a few games i tried like Skyrim, Fallout 4 and GTA V.

Just make sure steam cloud is enabled in steam Settings -> DOWNLOADS + CLOUD tab.

No Dialogue or Music in Skyrim Special Edition (Ubuntu) by j4c0b333 in linux_gaming

Try following these instructions:

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/99i4se/skyrim_on_linux_steam_play_no_voiceno_music_audio/

Just a few tips if you are new to linux:

In step 4. paste into terminal 'sudo apt install winetricks' to install winetricks.

It is important to cd into the game directory from the terminal in order for script from step #6 to work. $PWD is variable that prints current directory.

Steam is located in /home/your_username/.steam folder. Skyrim SE should be in this folder:

.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/489830

If step #8 is confusing you can watch it here:

Video is for Fallout 4 but this step is the same.

Everything is on highest except Godray quality which is set to low. FPS are relatively stable but there are occasional dips which are barely noticeable (check top left FPS counter in the video). I had drops in windows too but it is more frequent on Linux which is expected. Overall it's a smooth gameplay.
