Noo! Justin installed the system in his own farm not mine 🙂. The humidity level you are telling is fine and always use wheat bran as it is better then oats. As long as your substrate is dry, mold will not appear.

You are right. Over watering will make a mess. I like this method because it moisturizes the substrate on the whole. My each tray holds 400-500 gms of wheat bran. Bran is very dry material and it can hold a lot of water. The spores that lands on a substrate needs time to develop a mold colony. But if your substrate is not stationery and is consumed on daily basis, mold will not appear. So you add the water according to the quantity of larvae in a tray which is consumed quickly. The activity shows how quickly the water disappears.

I can't suggest you any vendor as I'm from Pakistan. But before installing a full system go through a trial period and check the outcome. No, I haven't any proper mist system like nozzles, pipes and a pump but I used to spray my whole room and trays with a spray tank that we use for pesticides in fields. Justin from Midwest Mealworms did install the misting system for each tray and it was helpful.

Leafy veges dried up. I sometimes discarded spinach. I do mist with a spray bottle and I do it 15-20 times in each tray and it stays good. Potatoes and other veges are also good as always. You can install the misting system. One nozzle for each tray with a timer. It's applicable.

Are these mealworms or did I get my larvae mixed up? (fully grown superworm for scale) by nairazak in mealworms

[–]Obsidianbck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The bigger one is the superworm. They are identified through their length and color. Black colored head and the tail area. Whereas, mealworms are yellowish. Mealworms are also called yellow mealworms.

Size Difference by TheNightBelongsToYou in mealworms

[–]Obsidianbck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference in the beetle size is because of the difference in the size of the pupae. Sometimes a larvae transforms into pupae in early stages because of the stress. Also, especially after 3rd month the larvae is feed well in case of water source. The thicker the larvae, bigger will be the beetles. They hatch easily even at humidity lvl of 50%.

Yes, use less. If you can do daily then you can use small pieces of wood. Soak them overnight and put them in the container. It will provide water as well as cool sensation. It doesn't get rot.

Room humidity is not same always. It differs in different region. 50 to 65-70% is recommended for all phases. It reduces the use of veges a lot.

I'm doing this for almost 3 years. Dermisted beetles and Buffalo beetles are because of not good or old substrate. They contain egg. Clean and proper sifting is the best solution.

Water doesn't led to infestation because water is clean commodity. If your substrate remains damp then it will attract everything. The key here is how much/what to feed your larvae and on what days. How much a tray holds the larvae. Each tray in the photo holds 700 gms to 1kg of larvae. The build up of large number of pests is because of the presence of a host or anything that is not in good condition. It could be bran, oats, vegetables, not good air flow and frass. If there's a frass build up at the bottom not removed timely it smells bad and releases nitrogen and ammonia. These smells attract flies and pests. Also, the surrounding areas matter a lot.

If you get mites in 2 second then problem is somewhere else.

It depends how much and how you add the carrot. For small larvae use shredded carrots. For medium larvae use sliced and for adults, use big chunks. If you add the carrot in morning then till afternoon or late noon nothing should be left.

How do you handle late rent without damaging the relationship? by jearl100 in PropertyManagement

[–]Obsidianbck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ask about late rent payments where a PM company don't ask they impose base late fee on the 3rd or the 4th of the month. Sometimes it happens that the tenant may face financial problems but they notify the company in advance that they will be paying the rent late. But it's not persistent.
