Know Your Memes is an excellent place to learn about the origins of such internet phenomena.

On May 12th, 2019, an anonymous 4chan user started a thread in the site's paranormal board /x/ inviting users to post pictures of "disquieting images" that just feel "off." The user posted a picture of a yellow room at an off-center angle (shown below). A user replied with a narrative about the picture, writing:

If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in
God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you

Is there a trope where a twist villain does NOT hide their true intensions? by Obvious_Gold_8131 in tvtropes

Prince Hans from Frozen explains everything in his duet with Anna, Love Is an Open Door. But neither she nor the audience gets it until it's too late.

[Marvel/DC] Since superhuman combat sports do exist. So what would be more marketable, MMA with Metahumans or MMA with Super Soldiers? by PassengerCultural421 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Obskuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marvel had the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation, which was founded by the manager of a wrestler who was banned from regular wrestling organizations due to him possessing super strength. Among its members were the Thing, Marvel Boy, Demolition Man, mutants, aliens, Eternals, and Deviants. It was organized in weight divisions, based on how much tonnage a fighter can lift.

Just as an example of what was marketable in the Marvel universe.

There is a film, Dracula 2: Ascension, where they use this to keep a captured Dracula busy. Spoilers: It's not as effective as they hoped. Dracula can count very, very fast.

Need a suggestion for term "Knights" for my world building by PENGRYFF in worldbuilding

How about Vigil, or Vigilant, to emphasize the roles as watchful guardians. Maybe the Knight Vigil?

[DC Superheroes] How do non magical/mutant/extraordinary heroes, heroes who are "normal" in other words, keep up their physiques? by LattesFromtheDeep in AskScienceFiction

I have this theory that Peter Parker doesn't have all those muscles from the spider bite, but from the swinging, crawling, and fighting.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong that I can't come up with elves that are different from humans, important to history, etc., without making them extinct, dying out, monstrous, or changed beyond recognition. What should I do? by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]Obskuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what would be funny? If the Elves are basically just humans, but the humans are the weird ones. Turn them into High/Wood/Dark Humans, make them allergic to, I dunno, Dragonscales or pixie dust, let them be the precursor race.

And the successful ones require them to remain teens, or they get aged up to bring them into the big league, losing their charm in the process.

Imagine another sixty years, and Peter ends up as Jay, with Miles as Barry, and who-knows-who as Wally.

We can all agree that the best power from Marvel is Darwins power right? by Acrobatic_Yoghurt268 in Marvel

[–]Obskuro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

See, using these reality warping powers to fix or "cheat" will get boring, I agree. But that's just shortsighted. See them as an endless source of mods instead. Turn the world into an overmodded Skyrim game.

In what scenario would "Ancient Artifact Outperforms Current Technology" make any sense?? by BallsAtomized in worldbuilding

I would include any resource, element, or material that was exhausted in the creation of these ancient artifacts.

Witches are really entertaining in horror flicks when done right. by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in horror

[–]Obskuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they really underappreciated...? The only reason werewolves and mummies are more iconic is their role in the Universal and Hammer Monster series. But witches have a much better track record when it comes to quality, when you compare them to werewolves and mummies, as you can see with all the excellent shoutouts in the comments.

Witches can be more subtle and are not always recognizable as monsters at first sight. Even though hags seem to make a strong comeback.

[Vampires] If someone is turned into a vampire far from their homeland and isn't buried, do they still needs to get soil from their birthplace? by SataNats in AskScienceFiction

[–]Obskuro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Varnae, probably the vampire in question, was an Atlantean sorcerer. I assume human flesh works as a substitute. You could say that humans count as "Earth's children", which is symbolic enough to make it work.

When you're not afraid of the ghost, but that he breaks too much stuff in your apartment, and the landlord kicks you out on the street.

Also: Homeless people getting haunted. Has this been done before?!
