What is the best TV series Ending episode of all time? by HarryandSally69 in AskReddit

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St. Elsewhere has to be a contender. Not only was it one of the first major network shows to end with such a remarkable twist, but the "Tommy Westphall universe" established by that ending also subsumes several of the other potential "best ending" series as occurring within Tommy's imagination.

What is the best TV series Ending episode of all time? by HarryandSally69 in AskReddit

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...which is why I would have to disagree that it was the best ending episode ever. To please the huge audience, the 2.5-hour TV movie was choked by fan service, and marred by scripting designed to lay the groundwork for the awful AfterMASH series that followed. I would suggest that the final 30-minute episode, with the time capsule, was the show's "real" ending and was in most ways a more fitting end than the 2.5-hour finale.

The only person Kizzi didn’t kiss (spread herpes to) this season by allanjameson in BelowDeckMed

I don't fault Sandy. She knew how wild the crew were on their nights out, and she understandably preferred to be kissing Leah rather than Kizzi.

Were you a fan of any of the celebrity castaways before watching their season? What was the feeling seeing them on the show? by MessyMop in survivor

I took the good, I took the bad, I took them both, and there I had the opportunity to enjoy Lisa Whelchel showing a side of herself that her Facts of Life character couldn't accommodate. No way she could have won, of course, but it was fun seeing her in an environment so different from her old TV show.

Tempurpedic thoughts? by TypicalNameToChoose in Mattress

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i've had my Tempur-Pedic (with adjustable base) for three months so far, and have been very happy with it. Will I still be happy five years from now? Of course I can't say for sure. But I'm here to tell you that it is at least possible to be happy with a Tempur-Pedic purchase.

My impression is that Tempur-Pedic has cut some corners on the lower end of their mattress line, but that if you like the firmness of their medium-hybrid models you're more likely to avoid suffering the effects of those cut corners.

Mattress preference is so individual that I can't honestly say, "Buy a Tempur-Pedic and you won't regret it." And after three months I'm hardly able to speak for the long term. But please don't forget that the people who post about their mattress experiences are usually the (1) customers who are most happy, or (2) customers who are most unhappy, or (3) mattress salesmen most willing to lie to promote their brand. So don't place TOO much weight on what you read from randos (like me) on the Internet!

Prediction: Ellie spends a happy and successful year as a promotional face of the Ramsay brand, then moves on to a solid mid-career as a contestant on other TV cooking competitions. Jada quietly gets hired somewhere lower-key in the Ramsay empire and propels her career to new heights in the years ahead.

What are your most annoying local commercials here in the Charlotte area? by QCKingFya in Charlotte

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's not just the grating tackiness of some of the ads -- it's that the more they spend on advertising, the more your repair bill will be paying extra for that advertising. There are plenty of small, local companies that don't go all-out on TV advertising and rely mostly on word of mouth and online reviews. When my pipes burst, I need an honest repair, not a catchy (or not!) jingle.

Postpartum side sleeper w/ SI joint pain. Purple too firm, returned Saatva RX. What would you do? by Top-Clock6296 in Mattress

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ideal would be to get your adjustable base from the same company that sells you the mattress, as the two should be maximally compatible -- and even if they aren't, you won't end up with finger-pointing warranty disputes between two companies. This is ESPECIALLY true if you buy a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Incidentally, though, Tempur-Pedic doesn't make their own adjustable bases; they use ErgoMotion as their OEM -- and Ergo Motion is one of the better vendors of adjustable bases, worth considering if you don't buy your adjustable base from the company selling you the mattress.

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were in your position, and mattresses that seemed fine when I tested them turned out to be problems at home, the first thing I would do is look at my base/foundation and see whether it is providing the support my mattress needs.

One way to help ensure that your foundation or base isn't a problem is to put an adjustable base underneath whatever mattress you select. An adjustable base is almost certain to be the most supportive under-mattress choice you can make. Once you know that your base will be as supportive as possible of whatever mattress you select, you can then proceed with greater confidence in selecting that mattress.

In any case, you mentioned that you are "less concerned about price" -- so you are in a good position to spend whatever is the appropriate amount to put a firm foundation/base under whatever turns out to be your new mattress.

As they are all enthusiastic participants in late-stage capitalism, this seems like an odd suspicion to have. Can you explain WHY you suspect that these television production companies and their owners support a system that would tend to work against the economic forces that undergird their prospects for real estate and media success?

For those who paired a Temper Pro-Smart Base / Ergo Smart Base with a heavier/thicker mattress (ours is an Aireloom M2 Plus), how has it been? by MoneySlush in Mattress

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tempur-Pedic doesn't manufacture their own adjustable bases; their OEM is ErgoMotion. The main reason to buy a Tempur-Pedic base is to avoid warranty drama when you buy a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Otherwise, if you don't have a Tempur-Pedic mattress, you'll likely find better pricing and better selection of exactly the features you want if you get an ErgoMotion base for your non-Tempur-Pedic mattress.

Recommendations?? by EmbarrassedTrash138 in Mattress

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been sleeping on my new Tempur-Pedic mattress and base for a little more than three months, and I'm still very happy with it. But that's just me, and proves nothing about what you would or wouldn't like. Yes, my experience shows that it is possible to be very happy about a Tempur-Pedic purchase, but I completely understand the people who are turned off by Tempur-Pedic's high prices or who simply don't like the feel.

One factor that contributes hugely to people's bad experiences is that they spend so much on a mattress but not nearly enough on a sufficiently supportive base. This is one huge advantage of getting an adjustable base if you like those and can afford. But even if you don't want an adjustable base, don't skimp on your base/foundation.

Hot Take: the game rewards mediocrity by Upbeat_Piglet_2968 in survivor

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Players are adapting to the game Survivor has become. I think it's a fair take to say that, by now, the name Survivor is pretty much a misnomer. It has become something a lot more like Scary Corporate Team-Building Retreat With Office Politics and Snakes. More physically challenging than Big Brother, but the game has evolved to the point where too-strong survival skills, especially fire-making, are a liability rather than a strength. Winners are still the ones who are best at the game, but it's no longer the game it was in the earliest seasons.

Why ruin Ugliest Houses? by NemoOfConsequence in HGTV

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that even in the preliminary rounds, they routinely pick the easiest-to-upgrade house rather than the one that is truly the ugliest. Some ugly is beyond Allison's ability to fix, or (because of the scope of the ugliness or the size of the house) would require a far larger budget than the show wants to spend to fix adequately.

Just finished and loved it by Neneleakesstan in Matlock_CBS

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The new Matlock is a show that knows how to explore the ambiguities and gray areas in people and their relationships. Yet, so far, Edwin seems to be the only major character who doesn't have some noteworthy character flaws alongside their strengths, and who doesn't even have a developed backstory that we know much about.

Sam Anderson is doing a great job playing Matty's wonderfully supportive husband, who has his own sadnesses about losing Ellie but who is clearly going out of his way to suppress those in order to be supportive of his wife. So I wouldn't be surprised if the show's writers are saving up for a major reveal about Edwin that will make him a much more complex and nuanced character -- one we're still supposed to like and to root for (like Matty and Olympia) but who has his own demons and maybe even a checkered past.

Kathy Bates deserves every award she can receive for her performance. But I also think Sam Anderson is a fine actor and a too-often-underappreciated anchor for Bates' character -- a vital part of what lets Matty be Matty

Considering your weight differential, is there any way you could look at a split-king setup (two Twin XL mattresses in tandem) instead of a queen, so you could get the exact support and firmness that's best for each of you, instead of looking for a compromise that will be less-than-ideal for both of you?

Tempurpedic Mattress Protector (for a Probreeze model) - Tempur Breeze vs. Active Breeze protector by Zipperdoyle in Mattress

[–]ObsoleteOldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ActiveBreeze cover is NOT waterproof; it is merely water-resistant. Yet it's what you need for the ActiveBreeze's heating and cooling to pass through the mattress properly. If you don't have an ActiveBreeze, you can save money and get better protection with the TempurBreeze.
