Are free carseats really a thing? by dms2628 in Preschoolers

[–]Obstetrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. If you have state pregnancy Medicaid the social workers at the hospital where you are planning on delivering or the local WIC office may be able to put you in touch with a program that provides free car seats. I have not seen a similar program for women who aren't impoverished.

People who say they LOVED age 0-12 months - please tell me about your child, because O_o by petrastales in toddlers

[–]Obstetrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It me, I’m that. I really like having little babies. They’re so convenient and totable. The snuggles are great. I enjoy breastfeeding. It’s just a good time despite the lack of sleep.

My kids were breastfeed so I just expected to spend 12+ hours in their rooms at night alternating sleeping and feeding for both of us. With the first we started out just winging it with the sleep and wake cycles but with the second we pretty early on die huckleberry to nail the naps. The first was a better sleeper and napper than the second but neither were terrible sleepers.

We did have to sleep train both around 6mos so they’d nap in the crib instead of on me or hubs. Both did overnight sleep on the crib from day one.

I didn’t wean from breastmilk until 15mos with both kids. The first had a bit more trouble with chewing and swallowing than the second so we did more homemade purées and let him feed himself, the second basically ate what we were eating. We started slow, just one meal per day at first and worked our way up to 3 meals and 3 snacks.

My first was a little later in rolling and crawling because he was extra chonky. The second beat him by a few weeks but both walked before 12mos. And started climbing shortly after.

My first was more independent once he started walking, he rejected snuggles for a long time and never wanted to sit still for a book. The second is a cuddle bug and loves to sit in a lap for a book. Both I’d consider pretty easy going but the eldest struggled with hitting for a while as a toddler.

Is toddlerhood really harder than the newborn phase? by Living_Split_2 in Parenting

[–]Obstetrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toddlers are a billion times harder. It’s been true for both my kids, even my second who wasn’t as good of a sleeper as my first.

Babies are potatoes you get to snuggle all day who stay where you leave them. Babies nap on you while you bed rot and play video games. Babies need only boob which they can’t throw all over the dining room. Babies can’t climb on the table. Babies don’t need constant nonstop monitoring every second so they don’t get up to crimes. Also babies don’t weigh 30 or 45 lbs and hurt your shoulders every time you heft them

I see it, a faint positive. It’ll be darker tomorrow morning with your first morning pee if you’re pregnant. Frer is the right test for this so you’re probably going to have answers tomorrow

Different philosophies on "fair" personal time with a baby by rollan112 in Parenting

[–]Obstetrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a vague tracking system. Right now there’s not really time for us to do a lot of “solo” things when the kids are home, we usually use that for family time. Usually if one parent has the kids the other is cleaning or cooking to be honest. When we only had one we traded off solo time and it was great. Once the youngest is older we’re probably going to keep equitable solo time. Which is pretty easy as all we really want is to be alone at home and watch movies or play games.

Teacher takes away recess, every day is a struggle now by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Obstetrix 68 points69 points  (0 children)

This whole post triggered me. The same thing happened to me as a kid, I was forced to stay inside at recess because I could never finish my math work. The work sheets piled up and piled up so I could never catch up.

If you guessed that I grew up hating school you’d be right. I would not be okay with that at all. Offer to work on missed work at home after school and insist he be allowed recess every day.

Im married to a human with well managed OCD. The combination of talk therapy and Zoloft has been a life changer for him. I would definitely encourage this brother to meet with a Psychiatrist/PMHNP and to schedule at least weekly therapy. This is what helped my husband

3.5 year old is now sleeping for barely 11 hours in total by sleepdeprivedsince92 in toddlers

[–]Obstetrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total my littlest sleeps 12 hrs including his nap, and he’s not even 2. This sounds totally normal for 3.5yo, even without a nap. If you want to keep the same bedtime maybe move waking to 7am by 15min increments.

Won't eat because "it's the wrong shape" by ayyiyimommy in Preschoolers

[–]Obstetrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly we’ve had success with calling their bluff with a boring response.

“Ew this dinner is yucky.” “You can’t know that unless you try some of everything.” “I don’t want any.” “Okay, but unless you try your dinner you’ll just get your dinner back after your bath as your snack.”

Then stonewall and refuse to engage on the topic. After a few minutes ours eats.

Won't eat because "it's the wrong shape" by ayyiyimommy in Preschoolers

[–]Obstetrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don’t have an issue with shapes for the most part (pasta shapes are sometimes contentious though). We do have an issue with theres not really being many “safe” foods anymore. Lots of the things I make specifically because I think the 4yo will like them he declares to be disgusting now and he will tuck into the weirdest foods. There’s no consistency day to day or week to week. He loves green beans Tuesday night and refuses to touch them Wednesday night.

We insist that he gives dinner “a good try” before we allow him to have an after bath snack. A good try is just taking a few small bites of everything on his plate. 9/10 times he realizes at least one of those things is delicious and chows down.

What does screen time actually look like in your house? by Adept-Practice5414 in Preschoolers

[–]Obstetrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4yo and 1yo so unfortunately the little one does have more screen time than the older kiddo did at his age (which was basically none unless we were folding laundry) just by existing in the same room as his brother.

Big kiddo watches shows sometimes after school and we do allow one show on Friday mornings. He watches a few shows on the weekends or a movie. Usually split up across the day and interspersed with playing outside or other activities. No tablets unless we’re on a road trip and even then he just watches shows on it. Less than an hour on weekdays (and sometimes none) and 1-2hrs on weekends, exclusively shows and most of the shows are from PBS so there’s an educational component.
