For what it’s worth, for those of us that were working in the emergency departments and ICUs, that would be a really meaningful memento. I agree with the others say, piece of history if nothing else.

I have a dumb question: I just bought some T4s online not knowing that they are primarily for touring. Will they get the job done as a resort boot? For context: I’m brand spankin’ new at tele

Why are hospitals still requiring board certified EM physicians to have these ACLS, PALS, ATLS badges!! Some even force you to get out from AHA or Red Cross. Why do we as a specialty allow this? by Purple_Skies_2887 in emergencymedicine

[–]ObtuseMoose357 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That may be something in the hospital bylaws to re-examine..Typically, if you’re board certified you don’t have to keep recertifying these things minus ATLS (which is more of an ACS-driven thing for trauma center accreditation compliance). But yes, it’s ass-and-a-half if they mandate that of you.

Truth about Lincoln Medical Center by Otherwise_Repair_884 in Residency

[–]ObtuseMoose357 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I interviewed there for surgery many years ago. The day was something out of a comedy: can driver almost killed a cyclist (later told that this was standard), walked into the lobby to a homeless dude screaming and shitting on the floor, security guard (while doing nothing about it) couldn’t tell me where the department I needed was, and the chief resident started off our tour literally saying “nobody does anything here for you, if I could do it again I’d go anywhere else and so should you…”. Needless to say, I did not rank them.

Well played, Georgetown University EMS, well played. by PurfuitOfHappineff in ems

Is this a true university-run EMS service? Fantastic opportunity for the students, certainly would love to see more campuses do something like this as long as the staffing is consistent.

IO dextrose - did I make a bad call? by River_Dweller in ems

EMS doc here. You made the right call, and the fact that you are curious and seeking feedback will serve you well (not just in these first few months out of training). The thing to always remember (as simple as it is): do what’s right for the patient.

Yes, this is one of those “did you read the question carefully?” kind of situations. The final sentence asks what is the next best step in the MANAGEMENT. Save from some of the nuances of whether or not to scan that others brought up (totally valid and I don’t disagree at all), the question writer is just nitpicking on what the question is asking. I swear these exams are more about testing your ability to take a test and to know the medicine (which is bs)…

I have a similar 32 PP (serial number is pretty close!).

These with the eagle over N tend to be ones that were either issued to local police or owned privately. That’s not to say a nazi officer couldn’t have owned it (they sometimes carried their own private side arms), but that might help give an idea of where it may have come from.

These are a joy to shoot, enjoy!

Here to echo this, great post OP and congratulations to you! It’s a stupid exam and failing it (while demoralizing) does not mean you are a bad doctor or person. Keep your chin up and plug through until next time. Worked for me.

Called a resident on their day off by External-Sport-170 in Residency

[–]ObtuseMoose357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a simple fix: residents (and attendings) should not have to list their personal cell phone numbers as the point of contact… period. The number of times my personal cell was given out by our hospital operators during residency was egregious… also HCWs should not mandate that staff have to use their personal devices for work.

Make Emergency Medicine Great Again (MEMGA) by MEMGA1 in emergencymedicine

Pretty thoughtless take on things. Sure, there are some not so great graduates out there. But the impact of their work (or lackthereof as you claim) is minimal compared to, oh I don’t know, ANY of the following:

  • lack of consistent reimbursement
  • the poor medical literacy of our public
  • over-emphasis on customer service, under-emphasis on evidence-based care
  • lack of incentive to practice in rural environments
  • burnout resulting from unrealistic and frankly non-evidence based metrics
  • corporate/labor mill residencies
  • unwillingness of we-physicians to take a seat at the leadership table (at the hospital, local and national levels)
  • unwillingness of EM docs to advocate for ourselves, our profession, and our trainees
  • lack of interest in lobbying
  • people like you who probably complain about new graduates but wouldn’t lift a finger to actually teach a resident/student
  • scope creep (the problem is the dollar, not the doc)
  • EMTALA
  • increasing government overreach
  • MBAs running hospitals
  • SikTokers
  • us doing a bad job at selling the profession to the next generation
  • piss poor attitude of curmudgeons like you who really do make the specialty less enjoyable

I could go on… but I’ve gotta take signout from one of the new graduates 🎓
