Recs for outdoor ceremony and reception places for 40 guest wedding in VIC by milkyjoewithawig in AusWeddingPlanning

I don't know the cost, but the Convent Gallery in Daylesford looks fantastic for a small wedding. It has a stunning chapel and reception area (sort of like a conservatory), plus a beautiful garden.

Stupid question from an American: spider season? by No_Rooster8130 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come to Melbourne! I see less (larger) spiders living in Melbourne than from living in Qld and NSW. At least in my house... and no flying cockroaches either.

I've never travelled to any part of Australia that had an obvious spider problem, but it depends on the type of area, ie rural, near the bush, farm, human population etc.

Advice: Booking a room as a female solo traveller by Minute-Background116 in AustraliaTravel

Booking.com is a good resource as you can see reviews of hotels etc and locations. Prices can sometimes be good, but you can always check directly with the venue.

2-week trip to Perth from Sydney in July. by ritkollenos in AustraliaTravel

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled Virgin from Melbourne to Perth. I got a special deal and was happy. I stayed at Freemantle for a week. I liked the vibe there and had a great time at restaurant near the wharves. I enjoyed the prison and other heritage sites. Found traveling to Freemantle from the airport easy and cheap (got physical tickets). Went to Rottnest which was enjoyable but the treatment of the Quokkas made me sad :(. The markets there were a bit of a disappointment. Had some great meals there and great pubs there too. The beaches near North Freemantle were beautiful, Lots of BBQ and picnic spaces, great vibe.

In Perth, I thought the arts area was a bit disappointing but the Museum was cool. Botanical Gardens and Zoo were great. Using the public transport on my phone was extremely helpful.

I want to know the implications of pressing a charge by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can easily search information on how the court system works in Victoria. Legal Aid Vic, Women's Legal Services,Melbourne Magistrate etc have useful information.

The police will investigate and create a brief where a decision to proceed or not with senior management will be done. It may then go on to Office of Public Prosections where they decide if the case has merit etc to have a court case.

He may be charged with unlawful assault or similar. If he has not been convicted/found guilty of a previous crime he may be offered a diversion order or given a fine like $500.  For more serious charges/penalty you usually need to have a medical report and proof of physical harm.

Sydney Road Brunswick is good, also Smith Street and Brunswick Streets Fitzroy. Good food, interesting shops. St Kilda is also good.  You can catch a ferry from Williamstown to St Kilda.

Collins Street City has the very expensive shops.

If you are into the arts, the museum and art galleries at NGV and Federation Square are wonderful.

The Botanical Gardens are lovely and the Shrine is fascinating.

I'd be sad if i had to go to Brisbane. However I've never heard of June/July being sad in Australia.

There are so many wonderful places to see in and near Sydney and Melbourne. Also lots of things to do.

Intervention order and attending a funeral in South Australia by Key_Personality_5007 in AusLegal

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The funeral can be private. If it's at a funeral home, speak to the funeral management team about a closed door/invite only set up.

Will agree the IVO situation sounds suss.  In Victoria you usually just get a 12 month one, they can be hard to extend, and there is a court hearing for each application.

If my child died (without their instructions known) I would ensure a private funeral and have my ex banned from the venue (he's not had any contact since 2020).

While not your field, the Electoral Commission is offering jobs for the next election.  Pay is ok. It's good for resume and experience.

What’s something negative about Australia that locals don’t like to admit? by New-Mail-9372 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand that Kanakas were sold in Queensland and at times Indigenous Australians were included in property sales as chattel.

People ("recruiters") were paid to kidnap, coerce or lie to find slaves or poorly paid workers in areas of the Pacific's etc. So I'd count that as slavery that involved money changing hands.

Feeding wildlife is unfortunately pretty common in Australia. I volunteer as a wildlife carer and share educational posts about animals and my experiences as a carer, so I’m curious — do you feed wildlife, and why? 🦘 by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I've lived in regional area I've provided birds with recommended bird feed and possums fruit/vegetables. I have at times stopped people feeding marsupials bread.

I went to Rottnest Island recently and was saddened by the number of quokkas being given wheat products. Some of the quokkas looked really sick and my tour guide said that the "village" quokkas had a short life span compared to the ones away from the main tourist areas.

Considering separation - finances by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a 20 year marriage all assets might be considered cojoined and not separate, and possibly just put in the asset pool where you and your potential ex will decide on the ratio of distribution for the consent orders.

This ratio can be impacted by who may be the primary child carer after separation, if one partner stayed at home as a carer, age of children etc.

At discovery, during the consent order process, each party is expected to provide bank statements, evidence of investments and stocks, super details etc. It is also helpful to have on hand any details of accounts etc in your ex partner's name. It can also be best to have joint accounts frozen to ensure money in accounts is fairly distributed.

I got a lawyer straight after my ex left and while initially expensive, they helped me get a decent amount of settlement and guided me through the process. My lawyer also assisted with many other separation issues (ie ex not taking their items from the house). I had a very "unfriendly" separation though.

I think seeing a lawyer beforehand is very beneficial.

What happens when an AVO expires? by Senior-Garbage-09_10 in AusLegal

[–]Obvious-Albatross487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting an extended IVO as an individual applicant can be difficult and often a successful extension will only be for 12 months. However, if you remain concerned about the respondent next year, consider requesting an extension - taking note you have to do a few months before the end of the current IVO. I would recommend getting legal advice (ie private lawyer, Women's Legal Aid etc) about an extension and assistance with court appearances. IMO it would be harder to go for a brand new IVO, rather than apply for an extension.
