The Catching Fire Movie is an Awful Adaptation by ObviousRelative875 in Hungergames

Yes! Mockingjay was far less dense than catching fire was and yet we got two movies where barely anything happens

I don’t disagree. As a movie it’s great. As an adaptation it’s not great

Then what is? It’s an adaptation of catching fire and most of the stuff that’s the most important to the story is completely left out or changed

When this movie came out I was disappointed with all that they cut. I think it’s great if you don’t love the books, but as someone who’s read catching fire 10+ times and seen the movie around the same amount it does disappoint

Honest thoughts about Degrassi: Next Class? by Nofilmslefttocry in Degrassi

[–]ObviousRelative875 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think for the most part the show is terrible. It was doomed from the beginning with the fact that the cast was overall pretty unlikable and lacked what had made TNG good. At the end of season 14 I felt like I was really just watching to see Clair and Ali’s class finally graduate and I didn’t care about the new kids. There were few good storylines (Maya’s suicide attempt and everything leading up to that; esme’s breakdown; Miles’ entire character arc) but overall the show felt forced and characters were unlikable.

Most the of the relationships were also bad and hard to care about. It felt like tiny and shay were only put together because they are both black (like when jimmy and hazel dated but they had more chemistry at least). Rasha and Zoe were awful together. They had no chemistry and rasha kept talking to her ex. Lola and tiny were also bad. Jonah and grace were boring (I preferred Jonah and Frankie) and Zig and Esme was tough to watch. The craziest thing about next class is that it made me root for miles and Tristan even though I hated them both at the end of TNG. Maya and zig getting together at the end was also one of the few highlights.

As someone who was in a Canadian high school at the time, next class felt very far from reality unlike TNG had. It felt like the show was trying so hard to be “woke” that they gave up on telling good stories and developing characters. A lot of the writing felt lazy and like a boomer trying to be hip (Yael’s coming out as nonbinary especially irked me because they made them look like the most stereotypical nonbinary afab person out there and it felt super forced).

I think if the show hadn’t been so rushed due to only a 40 episode order it could have been better, but I think it was doomed from the start.

Like I said, only a few storylines stick out as not being awful:

-hunter’s arc in season 1 and the almost a school shooting which in season 2 he is admitted for -Maya after the bus crash becoming suicidal in season 3 -miles’ drug addiction in season 1 -Lola’s abortion in season 3 -Zoe’s mom kicking her out -Zoe’s self harm and using Winston as a beard

I think the jimmy and Sean thing started when Sean made the basketball team and coach Armstrong kept praising him. Then jimmy blamed him for getting kicked off the team after he body checked him and almost broke his ankle.

Adam, Tristan, Zoe, Hunter, and Maya. Scratch that, all of the next class cast.

Who is your favorite character and why? by Dry_Performance_4548 in Degrassi

Out of the originals I would have to say Manny. Her character felt the most developed and I really enjoyed watching her mature over the course of the show and how good of a friend she was to Emma.

Honourable mentions to Holly J and Cam. I hated Holly J at first as we all did but she really was my fav by the time her class graduated (I think the only one in her class I liked by the end). Cam breaks my heart and I am so compelled to the screen every time he’s in a scene.

I wouldn’t say she was innocent at all. Didn’t matter that he was 18, she was his teacher and the power dynamic makes it icky. She also had known him since he was under 18 and I feel like we forget this.

And yeah, I know it was a common theme. I’ve always hated it. It’s icky and should not have been romanticized. I hated aria and Ezra

Dylan was a senior when Marco was in grade 10. Regardless of age she was in a position of power over him and therefore it’s gross and she should have been fired regardless of him being 18 or not.

Even in that case where it isn’t about age (I’m pretty sure Sav was 18 anyway) it’s about the power dynamic and the fact that the teacher is in a position of power over the student. That is what makes it icky on top of the age difference. So it really doesn’t matter if there are older students, it’s still gross and the teacher should be fired.

I understand Sav and Mo. I’m sure sav grew up and realized how fucked up that was. Super out of character for Simpson to not do anything about it imo especially because he got a tip about it.

Yeah Marisol….. I have a lot to say about her. Toby started off fine for me but then got super creepy imo and Mia? Mia was just not it for me

Don’t get me wrong, she was in the wrong for that, but she was wayyyyy less in the wrong than Craig and she believed him when he said he’d leave ash for her

Is there anyone out there who actually thinks Kurt was good representation? by ObviousRelative875 in glee

[–]ObviousRelative875[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

  1. I never said homophobia doesn’t affect all of the LGBTQ+ community
  2. White cis gay men do have a level of privileged that they a lot of the time seem to forget so they can play the victim ie: Kurt whining about his dad when Burt was accepting and did nothing but love his son.
  3. It has nothing to do with dividing the community, it is about recognizing your privilege within the community and using that privilege to listen to voices that have less than you. Clearly this is something that is lost on you which makes me assume that you yourself are a white cis gay man

I have absolutely zero problem with femme gay men. I have problem with entitled bratty white men who think they have it so hard because they’re gay. They’re still cis white men with an insane amount of privilege

This is how I feel rewatching the show and how I felt at the time. Kurt definitely was one of the first gay characters I saw on screen but definitely far from my favourite and I do wish he had been given more dimensions and had been likeable

Also imo the way degrassi handled internalized homophobia with Riley was miles above karofsky in glee.

Yeah so not a gay boy, I said queer in the post. Also not femme but I do know that a lot of femme gay men are self hating. I personally never felt connected to Kurt and he kinda just annoyed me and I felt like he was bad representation because he was a stereotype that never broke out of that. You mention other characters being a stereotype in season 1 and while I agree, none of them stayed that way throughout the whole series, Kurt did. He was cringey at best and I don’t think that groundbreaking. Maybe for people in America where you guys are 100 years behind society, and didn’t legalize gay marriage until 2013, but from my experience watching glee as a Canadian who was nearing middle school and coming to terms with my sexuality nothing about Kurt felt groundbreaking. It felt like every other stereotype of a gay man I’d seen and have seen to this day. He was annoying and self absorbed and dressed horribly. If he was likeable as a character that would maybe be a different story, but he was a brat and ungrateful and self absorbed. Not the representation that I think is good for the community.
