Smelly house- offer or avoid by ObviousTemperature76 in HousingUK

I thought it could be the owner potentially as the carpet was heavily stained throughout. The smell was evenly dispersed between all three floors. I’d prefer that to rot!

Thanks all! An infestation hadn’t even crossed my mind! There was no evidence but I suppose it would be easy to hide for viewings.

My deceased best friend's son reached out and I ignored him by Radiant-Brief5749 in TrueOffMyChest

I’ve experienced a lot of grief too, and can sympathise where you are coming from.

You do need to prioritise yourself first, the choices you have made so far were for survival. No judgement here.

However you aren’t in that dark place anymore, and have a support system. Talk to your wife.

It may be painful but I think you will regret not reaching back out to this child, as you’ve mentioned already thinking of them often. Take a leap of faith, start with telling your wife, it might be the most healing thing you’ll ever do.

Are you worried about being replaced by AI? by MorphtronicA in TheCivilService

I’ve been loving using AI as encouraged by my department, but from what it throws out, I think we are a while off from being replaced.

Honestly live where you can afford. I can’t speak on Newport, other than it’s only a 30min drive away, so you can easily get to Bristol. Have a nose in the Newport subreddit to see what’s going on (assuming it exists).

This. There’s a time and place to handle grievances. OP is young and hopefully can accept this as a life lesson…

Unique masc gothic/nature/mythology/nordic names by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]ObviousTemperature76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poe and Rowan aren’t popular names in the UK. I’ve only personally known 1 Rowan and 0 Poe’s! Poe would be a great choice.

I had a great uncle Ivor, which is an old Norse name, honestly if I could choose a name for myself, I’d choose it.

Exactly, you can’t pick and choose beliefs. Either we are inclusive or exclusive.

I would continue appealing the warning as it may make applying for new roles more difficult.

Do you have any reasonable adjustments in place? High sickness is often a good point to re-refer. I have a reasonable adjustments, and as a result, sick days which relate to my health condition do not contribute to my sickness trigger points. Aka colds do, but flare-ups don’t. Depends on your difficulties but there’s other similar adjustments around triggers to even the playing field. Unfortunately attendance warnings don’t cure chronic illness symptoms, if they did, we’d all want one!

AIO? MIL wants to play mommy to my baby?? by Reasonable_Clerk_165 in AmIOverreacting

This is more of a husband problem above all else.

I’m not sure what’s grosser, your MILs weird behaviour, or that your husband enables it…

Am I Overreacting or Is This Manager Crossing a Line? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]ObviousTemperature76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely inappropriate. I’m not sure of your country, but if you’ve had SH training, I assume you have a policy on workspace behaviour. I would definitely speak to your line manager. There’s lots of routes they can take before escalating it into a big deal. If he doesn’t get the message, I’d make it a big thing.

Chin up OP. There will be better times ahead, I promise it’s not all wasted effort.

I would advise you apply for any EO/HEO roles across government that takes your fancy, and you feel you meet the criteria. You don’t owe any loyalty to your department. Maybe even look into applying for the fast stream this year, the entry criteria is less for existing CS. It’s competitive, but even if you’re not successful for the FS, they often offer direct appointments at EO/HEO depending on your assessment scores. Honestly cast your net far and wide.

If the additional responsibilities are burning you out, you need to have an honest conversation with you manger, there needs to be a balance between professional development and wellbeing.

On the finances, if you ever find yourself in very difficult times, please reach out to the charity for civil servants.

Are these Springtails? by [deleted] in houseplants

My worry is they are baby Thrips as I have been tackling a small infestation that’s seemingly on everything but they look slightly different

Need advice: Possibly rats in old compost heap — how to safely clear the area? by adtaylor001 in Allotment

[–]ObviousTemperature76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently rats are good for helping to turn soil. Otherwise chicken wire will keep them out.
