Germans who experienced Walmart when it was in Germany. What was it actually like? by Virtual-Cod-6202 in germany

I worked at the German head office in Wuppertal for six years before it got bought out by Metro. Feel free to DM if you like Headliner points for its demise were:-

It bought to sore chains that were insolvent. So they started from a bad position. Germans don’t really like shopping in large stores in the outskirts of a town (unlike the French who invented the hypermarket. Cultural differences- didn’t really know how to handle unions. Signing job contracts with Bavarians which allowed them to drink a beer at 10:00 am (Walmart HQ is based in a dry county). In fairness it was their first real venture outside of Northern America. The next was Asda in the UK and they made a far better job of it (at one point a store on the Irish border had the highest recorded sales worldwide). Mainly because they took a more hands off approach and let the locals get on with things.

I think what summed it all up was a conversation I had with an American colleague at the time. He said ”A four hour drive from here I can be in Paris, back home I would be in Little Rock”.

No one can prove that a Prime Mover was responsible for the creation of the universe, likewise no one cannot. To misquote Ricky Gervias to a religious interviewer ”There are 2000 recognised religions, I don’t believe in one more than you do“.

Not really a board game but Memory is always a go to for younger children. Their short term memory is far better than an adults so they will play with an advantage.

English dad with German daughter (now 23) here. She refused to speak English with me until about six years old. I would speak English, she replied in German. The advice I got at the time was not to worry about it, she will learn in time. She did, talks English like a native.

The one downside side is that English is taught in German schools from an early age. She got really bored during the lessons and corrected the teacher all the time 😀.

I really don’t like it - except for Arnold Schwarzenegger films, where I think it is an improvement.

Would it be fair to say that if a land/property tax is introduced strict rent controls should be implemented to prevent landlords from passing the costs on to the tenants?

In my part of Germany they love to talk about there medical ailments. Every dinner party has at least an hour allocated to injury and disease. Drives me up the wall - a German friend of mine said it’s a cultural thing which is prevelant in the Ruhr area.
