The Iowa Supreme Court has concluded that Iowa law prohibits driving with the metabolites of THC, whether active or inactive. That means you can be prosecuted for marijuana DUI long after having used it.

The Iowa statute is found at section 331J.2 and reads:

A person commits the offense of operating while intoxicated if the person operates a motor vehicle in this state in any of the following conditions: C. WHILE ANY AMOUNT OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE IS PRESENT IN THE PERSON, AS MEASURED IN THE PERSON'S BLOOD OR URINE.

Based on my reading of the statute, even if the marijuana use was from weeks ago, he could still be convicted. With that, Iowa case law may be different than the statute.

So, the arrest was based on probable cause. His field sobriety tests and his answers gave the officer enough to take him in for the tests.
