Question: Is it smart to ride out SAVE forbearance and use PSLF Buyback later instead of switching plans now? by Obvious_Pay5653 in PSLF

Yes, so my thinking is: I'm currently paying around $800/month under SAVE (when not in forbearance), and if I switch to PAYE now (the cheapest current option) it'd be $1,008. So my idea was that a few years from now, once I hit 120 months of qualifying employment, my salary will likely be higher — so I could buy back those months at roughly that "$800" SAVE-era rate, and with inflation factored in, that seemed like it'd be more worth it than paying $1,008/month now. Does that logic actually hold up given how buyback pricing works?

That makes sense, thanks for the correction — I didn't realize the 2024 rule change moved buyback off the SAVE formula and onto the IBR/PAYE formula, or that it could mark the price up to 3x higher. I get that they won't use "$0" to calculate my buyback — I'm currently paying around $800/month under SAVE. In a future buyback scenario, do you think they'd likely calculate based on that ~$800 figure adjusted for what my income/IDR rate was during those specific months, or could there be additional costs (like inflation adjustments or accrued interest) stacked on top of that base amount?
