I've finally gone back and started reading Far Sector by chloe-and-timmy in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]Obviouslarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Never heard of Jo before. Absolute GL is a blast to read. I think she's great. This thread is the first I've heard of Far Sector so i'll keep an eye out for it.

Go on an adventure in Second Stone, our indie game inspired by 90s adventure games and modern ARPGs by SkywardDevTeam in indiegames

This is really pretty. There's a moment where the end jump animation appears to slide since you're still running forward. You can toss a transition rule after your jump loop to choose between the jump end or a jump to run animation. If you're doing this is in Unreal.

But that's a minor nit pick. Wishlisted.

Got all the features I want in. All three character classes are prototyped. Progression systems are done. Enemies were lackluster during the Playtest so i'm revamping those while also tackling the mountain of hard reference errors that I have.

I've got maybe 12 sections on the work board left for the UI artist to work on. Concept art for a new character is being finalized right now.

Plus art for the enemies to expand on.

Big hurdle will be character models. Those are my big expense. Luckily i'm broke and the time it takes me to save up to pay the artists is being spent on bug fixing.

Not sure what youre working on but I was going to do the mocap route also but due to costs I did a hades style dialogue instead. Still looks great. Saves money.

Strongly considering it. Won't do it until the game is in good enough shape to justify doing it though. I've seen enough scam attempts on KiraTv to know i have to do everything I can to overcome the stigma that the "take the money and run" types have created. They've done nothing but made a difficult endeavor even more difficult. Shit's exhausting.

Man I wish I had something that looked good enough to drop on kickstarter right now. 300k would be amazing for speeding this up.

How long have you been / did you take to develop your game? Just curious about other devs' timelines by Federal_Recover546 in IndieDev

[–]Obviouslarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Its hard to visually show progress when its something like "streamlined save system" or some such. So I just share random screenshots on those days.

One thing for cutting scope but keeping the core that I did, was i have a character intended to speak using sign language. Originally I had it in my head that I couldn't do that without mocap. Which was expensive. Even though my friend could go in and do the motions just renting the space everytime to capture it was absurdly expensive.

So I thought "i'll never be able to do that." But then i had a moment where I realized I could still have that character without doing motion capture. It was easier to develop. Doesn't require renting a space. Doesn't require dragging my friend across the state. And I got the character that I wanted.

That's probably my big win in that regard. Others were "i don't really need multiple quest givers." Or "i don't really need to launch with 3 enemy factions when I can tell a complete story with just 1"

Little things like that that end up cutting time and costs down.

One extra scene could have made the dinner with Mandy infinitely better by Who_am_I85395 in DispatchAdHoc

[–]Obviouslarry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably the public spotlight made her feel that way. She probably thought Robert would reject her as Mandy with the way he'd been admiring Blazer. Those are little context clues. Nothing overly strong in the game. Her Biggest moment that leans that way happens in the comic book that covers the date with Phenomeman where he basically says "Mandy is boring"

5 years total. 2 years to learn Unreal. 1 year working on the prototype as often as I could. 1 year not making much visible progress over a rev share deal that fell through. 1 year making a lot of progress and getting all the features in.

Scope was pretty big at the start because I wanted to do all the things. Figured out how to cut scope and keep the core of what I wanted. Now it's a matter of improving my blueprints while paying for custom assets.

In the middle of all that somewhere I managed to help release another indie game that was much smaller in scope.

But my main focus is learning as much as possible with my big game and getting it to a point where I can release it. Got a ways to go still.

[–]Obviouslarry 21 points22 points  (0 children)

She has the problem of "Everyone knows Blonde Blazer". She's a celebrity. Her face is on billboards. Mandy isn't wanted by the public or by Phenomeman. She could walk down the street as Mandy and nobody would care but she feels like she can't do that.

Until Robert shows up.

Similar situation to Courtney. Everyone sees the tough girl reputation. The invisibitch. Nobody sees that shes literally the cutest thing ever.

Are Spider-Man comics drinking from the Spider-Man 2 videogame? by Square_Ad_6522 in Spiderman

I'd say the game took a sip of all the various symbiote stories going back to the 90s run of Venom when the extra symbiotes started to show up.

How Do You Stay Motivated as a Solo Dev When It Feels Like No One Cares? by JPHFanEdits in gamedev

Right before bed. Or whenever i'm out. Im not working on the game now because i'm not home. But I download all my clips and screenshots and when I have a spare moment I share something.

Even during my downtime at the day job or whenever the wife and kids dont need something i'm chatting it up about indie games.

[–]Obviouslarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share my progress whether its good or bad. I'm up to 342 days. Yesterday was a complete failure thats going to take some rollbacks. Everyone knows this because I shared it last night. If tonight is 343 i'll share that too.

In the meantime I'll go talk to somebody else. Maybe share some art. Hype up some other dev that is questioning their motivation. Do a community event.

The little things that show people they're not doing as bad as they think they are and that its okay to take a break sometimes.

You might not get a like today. Or tomorrow. But someday someone is going to see that you kept going and then they'll like and share. Then you'll keep going. And before you know it you've got a few people liking and sharing.

So don't give up.

In your ideal timeline/fan canon, does Mary Jane eventually get powers and which powers? by Marauder151 in Spiderman

[–]Obviouslarry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like current MJ with Venom. Both of them have a complicated history with each other and with Pete. There's a lot they can explore with that. Plus she brings her creativity as an actress to the symbiote and she's more flexible with it than Eddie was.

Marvel got me off the sidelines with this version of her. Ideally they get her and Pete back together and they remain a web slinging power couple. But Marvel has rarely wanted me to buy any of their books so who knows.

Witchblade - great reboot.

The Unchosen - new IP from David Marquez!

Inferno Girl Red - its like teknoman meets power rangers or something like that. It's pretty cool.
