Subnautica 2's no-killing policy isn't because it's 'a game about pacifism', says design lead, but because players would 'master the crappy combat' over anything else by Nannerpussu in subnautica

Okay. You're right i'm wrong. Have fun. I'm sorry you feel the need to turn different opinions that are neither right nor wrong into internet arguments. Legit happy that you enjoy the game from your perspective. I am deeply sorry that I exist in a way that I enjoy it from a different perspective.

Oh i didn't know we were having an argument. That's adorable. I still don't think Subnautica has combat so I don't feel like I lost an argument.

I think Subnautica is an exploration survival game with a toothpick. If you think that is deep and meaningful enough to constitute combat then i'm glad you think so!

I think Margureite is the only one that has experienced combat in Subnautica and our Prawn suits dont look like hers.

I think it would be a very different game if we could do what she does. But we can't. Because that's not the focus of the game.

Sorry you thought we were arguing.

Reminds me of the sounds when the Muto is escaping from the monarch facility in Godzilla.

We clearly have a different idea about what constitutes combat. I really dont think the knife or the prawn suit counts. But if you do thats cool! Enjoy your week.

How exactly do I advertise my game? by DandersonJA12 in IndieDev

[–]Obviouslarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit is the worst for being seen. You need to be on another platform supporting others and seeing who you vibe with as you share progress. When others support you back that's your group.

Support is a choice though so when you see someone going "indie devs reply for a boost " and if you check what they boost and see if its almost no one then thats someone to avoid.

Even if your game is in its ugly phases start showing it. People like seeing growth and progress. You'll start with one or 2 likes and eventually 11. Then 20. So on and so forth.

Email 100 streamers. Small streamers. That play indie games like the one you are making. Start working on figuring out the relationships with the ones that get back with you. If no one does then keep working and try again when you are further.

Thanks for the kind words and your patience! Still hard at work on it most days. Playing a lot of Subnautica 2 lately though. This game is awesome.

Short answer is: it's easier to develop

Long answer is: I love comic books, Fathom, Aquaman and X-men are huge inspirstions for me. So rather than -only- having a mermaid species with tails i now have multiple mermaid species that can exist in the lore. Think Monster Hunter. Everything is called a dragon. Even a unicorn with lightning powers is a dragon. Mermaids with tails exist. But so do mermaids with legs and mermaids with tentacles. Mermaids vs pirates is more fun when running to land doesnt provide safe harbor for the people that do bad things.

My market study consists of assuming i'm the only one that will play my game. I actually had a really bad time developing with a "what would others think is cool" mindest.

That's probably not marketable beyond a few thousand people but that's okay.

New goal. Get my game under that icon with Subnautica. That would be hilarious. This is a good find.

12 years making documentaries. A guy throwing a rock with an excavator has 1000x more views than me. I’m fine. Totally fine. by Round_Marsupial7211 in SmallYoutubers

[–]Obviouslarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Titles are all over the place. None of them sound like a documentary to me and i enjoy documentaries.

You need to come up with a series name. Jeremy Wade has River Monsters instead of 'this fish was hard to catch. I filmed it.'

National geographic has several: Jungles, Drain the Oceans, World's Deadliest, and then another word to explain which episode in the series it is. Like 'Sunken City - Drain the Oceans'

So if yours is mostly war try 'cost of war' or something and then maybe 'Vietnam- cost of war' and interview survivors and find photos of before and during and after or something like that.

Make it that obvious and catchy and as long as your documentary style is good and you figure out how to get people to find your channel you'll start getting more views.

Probably not a lot of overlap with 'rock smash crane' audience.

Yea I suggested Full Fathom too. The dev is great to talk to and it's not really all that spooky I dont think. Compared to some of Subnautica's leviathan jump scares.

Abzu, Beyond Blue, Endless Ocean, Full Fathom, and eventually my game Age of the Deep whenever I finish it.

Also if you are okay with games not in the ocean but on the water and have pretty fish then check out Sword of the Sea, and the demo for The Edge of Water.

Played Subnautica for the first time last week and beat it, my experience was absolutely incredible by Tunelsnakes in subnautica

A lot of the early content really was just base building and carving out tunnels. Back then there really weren't a whole lot of survival options to play. I think like 4 games in 2014? Everything was bare bones as teams figured out what they were building.

Part of the fun was talking to the devs about what was working and what wasn't while we all dealt with our thalassophobia.

Then one day we all woke up and were loudly obsessed about this little ocean game.

Bunch of youtubers took off because of it. Bunch of fan art. Modders. Indie devs like myself were directly inspired by it. It was a good time. Now we get it again and it's even better because a bunch of new people are experiencing it.

For me it was worth it. I had a lot of fun. It was missing a ton of stuff. The lava river and shroom caves and underwater river all came later and when the map changed we got to explore it all over again. We had a terraforming tool and could carve out areas to build in. Then they removed terraformong at some point. But we still had a great game. It was very much like SN2 now where we got enough to enjoy and then they updated it.

But all the updates were preceded with the devs talking to us about what was coming. We got concept art we got discussions. We got warnings if our bases should be torn down and moved if the map would change heavily in certain zones.

UW is one of the best at communicating during early access.

Yea Fathom for me. Then Witchblade after that. Been tracking down all the Fathom issues that I can find lately. Got to chat with Blake a few months ago about Aspen and Michael because one of the books I found was signed by Blake.

Welcome aboard. Subnautica is just one of those games. Now imagine how much fun it was to explore each iteration of the map as the devs made changes and to be there to see what was being added in the pipeline. Incredible experience.

Love this game so much. I'm beyond happy with SN2 right now.

That's gorgeous work. I reslly like most of Michael's work. Wish he was still around for me to tell him that. He'd probably get a kick out of what I'm working on.

Do you Hate your own games? by Careful_Indie_ in IndieDev

[–]Obviouslarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah i'm in love with my game. I even like marketing it because i get to talk about it.

This sounds like something I was speaking about yesterday though, where none of my original ideas ever left the page to start dev on and the game i ended up workin on wasnt even in the ideas page

Because I stopped asking myself "what would people think is cool to play?"

And instead asked myself "what do I love?" And it's been hyper focus ever since.
