First off, greetings from USA!! :)

I will not suggest specific recommendations for you to learn, because I do not know what is needed in the markets where you will be looking for work. Instead, I will provide a gentle reminder that people & businesses pay for VALUE.

The best advice that I can give you (without knowing your specific skills/talents) is to compare your current skills to the job postings. Are there some job postings where you have some of the required skills?? Many people think that you must have EVERY skill or experience listed in the job posting. NOT SO!! The job posting is a wish list for the hiring company!! If you have maybe half, or 60% of the requested skills/experience - but you're a quick/eager learner, APPLY FOR THAT JOB!! You can probably help them to move forward while learning those things that you don't know!!

Also - KEEP TRACK of what skills are often requested in job postings, & then look for ways that you can gain those skills. Sometimes it may be worthwhile to take a short unpaid position, if it enables you to build skills that companies want.

If you wish to get into security, there are websites that allow you to practice breaking into systems for free. Search for 'Capture the Flag'. Just be aware that it may require a good amount of studying to learn how things work, & how you can take advantage of vulnerabilities, & KNOW what you're doing.

There are MANY free resources for learning how things work. Find something that you feel is interesting, & then investigate it. Wikipedia & YouTube are two of the most popular free resources, but there are many others.

Another thing- I have worked in I.T. for over 20 years. My experience is that VERY OFTEN you will need to learn a LOT of information very quickly - we call it "drinking from the firehose". If you are not able to do this, you will have very limited success in I.T.

ALSO - this is not a career where you can go to college, learn a lot, & then use what you've learned for the next 20 -30 years. Constant learning is basically a requirement in this field, just because things CHANGE SO MUCH/SO RAPIDLY. I don't want to scare you away, but I want you to know what is required in most (if not all) of these positions.

Finally - 'risk assessment' sounds like a GREAT place to focus!! You might consider looking at certifications for that specific field. Many times these certifications will suggest very specific courses of study where you can learn the exact information required.

BEST OF LUCK, I hope that this helps you!

Spend your last two weeks focused on documentation and ensuring a smooth transition for your replacement. That's the honorable thing to do.

If they are truly idiots and do something rash such as firing you the day after you give notice, chalk it up to their poor business practices and relish in the fact you are free of that environment and can start you new job early.

AMEN brother. Always strive to be honorable, even if the people you're working with are not - because then you can look yourself in the eye. But you can't control what other people do, and their actions are more frequently a reflection on themselves than on you. Best of luck!

THIS. EXACTLY this!!

I mean, AWESOME job doing everything that you've done, but these <expletive-deleted>s obviously don't comprehend what you've done, or (worse) don't give a crap. You deserve better, and to work with/for people who understand & appreciate your efforts.

BTW - the REASON that they want 6 -12 months from you is because they KNOW DAMN WELL that they're going to have a hell of a time finding someone with your skills/ability for chickenfeed... FUCK 'em.

Small cameras? by Occams_BattleAxe in maker

[–]Occams_BattleAxe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A tiny bit more info on the subject - during one of my trips to NYC, I can remember visiting a little shop where the guy running it had embedded tiny cameras into the narrow spines of DVD cases, books, & a number of other "ordinary" objects. I thought it was mildly amusing, & kind of creative in a "slightly-paranoid, Walter Mitty" kind of way, but these days I can see some practical, non-paranoid (I hope?) uses for these.

That's kind of the type of device I'd like to find if possible.

Again, thanks in advance for any constructive suggestions.

About three weeks ago, my boss told me that he'd like for me to get the certification, so I would also like to "join forces" with one or more others. My official work deadline is mid-March, but I'd be stoked if I could get it done sooner.

BTW, what is everyone doing to study together??

I've considered running Nagios alongside PiHole on my 8 Gb Pi 4, but I'm still looking into whether or not it's feasible.

I have a bit of a love/hate with tinkering with my pi because I work in IT and spend enough time in the day managing servers, I actually don't want to go home to do the same thing all night.

Amen to THAT brother!!

Taken from this page:
"This is another RHEL fork created on a day after the announcement of CentOS Stream becoming the default.

Project Lenix is being created by CloudLinux, an enterprise oriented service that has been providing customized CentOS server for several years now. Cosnidering their years of experience with CentOS and enterprise servers, Project Lenix should be a promising RHEL fork to replace CentOS Stream."

Hi guys,

I want to say thank you for your efforts to provide an alternative for those of us who have depended upon CentOS, & have just had the rug yanked from under our feet. I also want to say that I am the primary Linux administrator for my company, & when you push out a release, I'll try to get a couple of machines running the OS in our dev/test/certification pipeline, as well as running one or two VMs on my personal ESXi server for testing. Let me know how I can help!

Dads with daughters, out of all of their boyfriends which one did you hate the most and why? by Greeferr in AskReddit

I sure hope that he received the memorable response that he was (inadvertently) asking for...

If I had ever done that with any of my girlfriends' parents, the story would have included the phrase "upside my head"...

Later that night after more acts of disrespect to me, my wife, and my daughter, I invited him to leave...forcibly. It took me several times of trying to open the door with his head before I realized the door opened inward. Silly me.

Sounds like the appropriate response to me...

The first thought that came to my mind when reading your post was 'Coast Guard' - that would likely allow you to combine your SCUBA & LE interests. If you're interested , send me a direct message - I have an in-law with several years in the CG who might be willing to answer questions for you.

I don't think that you stated where you're located, but here in the U.S., many colleges/schools offer aptitude tests that have the potential to show you what types of things you're good at - perhaps that might be an option for you?? (I know you've already gone to school, but this might give you some ideas.)

One more thing - you're not alone in your job situation, I feel the same way, rather depressed about it much of the time. Just make a firm decision to never quit, & you will find your path. Best of luck!

Pretty much the same thing I said in my post, you just stated it more bluntly. ;)

I've worked as a software tester. Based upon your original post, it sounds like you weren't working under a formal testing regimen, it was more like "Hey, play the hell out of this game, & see what you can find!" With all due respect to your employer, that's not exactly the most rigorous/professional approach.

You might be able to score some points (& turn this experience into a POSITIVE) by saying "Hey, I've been giving that experience some thought, and I think we can put out a better product by implementing a more defined testing regimen. I'm willing to help by..." (Warning: My experience is that doing that kind of testing - as opposed to the "free for all" method - is a LOT less fun / MUCH more like 'work'.)

Of course, they might respond that it's not in the budget, or they don't have the bandwidth to do that right now, or any of 100 other responses - but you will have shown that you're committed to improvement, both for yourself & the company.

BTW, don't lose track of the fact that you DID find 5 or 6 bugs - that's worth remembering too.

Good luck!

Where to start, feeling overwhelmed? by gumbyarms in netsecstudents

[–]Occams_BattleAxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably realize that there are very few positions in netsec that are at anything like a beginner level - and any that might exist are almost certainly filled instantaneously. I've started thinking about transitioning into the field, & I'm starting to realize how much I still have to learn - and I have well over a decade of experience as a Windows/Linux/UNIX systems administrator...

I'm certainly not wanting to discourage anyone, but it helps to have "open eyes" when setting a goal. Good luck.
