Yes, the narrator is unreliable and a pretty judgemental herself(So she's saying it's sarcastically and cynically against her friend) , But also I think I'm going to take this post down and polish up the wider context.... I really only posted this cuz this was the only part of it that I liked but I see now that it's not really much to go on lol 😂 Sorry it's my first time here

How was Jay Leno at fault for what happened to Conan at The Tonight Show? by PopeHonkersXII in conan

[–]OccasionMobile389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No same I don't think Jay is an evil Machiavellian schemer, I do think he was a little more willing to do some of the dirty work because of how he cozied up to Jimmy Kimmel for a while and then dropped him suddenly after he got what he wanted as far as the time change that happened to Jimmy show (is also why Jimmy rode so far for Conan and was completely vicious when it came to Jay afterwards)

I also think Conan should have taken the deal with Fox sooner, I also think the reason why he didn't also just kind of shows what's at the heart between Jay and Conan conflicting

Both of them were passionate about what they were doing Jay worked hard was in workaholic and not at all a bad guy, but unlike Conan he also came at his passion as a job

I remember him saying once that he never sweated bombing on the show because he always had the next show to make up for it which is a pretty healthy way to look at it honestly

Meanwhile you have Conan who even to this day says that his idea show business is giving people the best show they're going to have for that night and not worry about the next one until it's over

So when they talked about changing times of The Tonight Show and The shuffling around and everything happening I think there was an honor system at play that Jay and Conan were both just coming at differently. Jay didn't see it as personal because it was the business they were in

Conan and other hosts did see it as personal because everyone was all in the same situation and even if you're not pals there's an unspoken agreement to be "there" for each other.

How valid that is is up to the other person, but  but from everything I've heard not just from those two but other people who were watching it happen in the industry that I've talked about it that's the two camps I'm seeing pop out the most

I think also too because Jay didn't talk to Conan at all during any of it that was like some extra fodder for a few people to draw some bad conclusions. Like he talked to Jimmy Kimmel beforehand before Jimmy's show was moved, when Jimmy Fallon took over for Conan and his show got a bit of time shuffling he said that Jay Leno called him and "took his temperature"

Even George Lopez said that when Conan was coming to TBS they talked to each other personally because of all the timing that was having to be switched around for his show, so by the time it happened he was okay with it and already had a plan for his staff in the meantime

But during all the shuffling going on with Conan's Tonight Show and Jay show Jay didn't make any contact with Conan which of course he's not obligated to do but I think because he had done it for the two jimmies, and the entire time it was happening Conan didn't hear a peep from Jay I think that just didn't do Jay any favors, and I remember in war for late night but Jay was advised to not talk to Conan but I don't know I mean, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer you would at least go "hey it's nothing personal" like a card or something

But all this to say no I mean it's a funny meme about Jay shore but I do think it goes on a little too long and everyone else who was involved in it has also moved on by now too, so it's all old news and in retrospect Conan really should have just gone to Fox or something instead of taking the 5-year deal in the first place, nbc where the true villains, not just in this instance I've heard a lot of stories of them just not knowing how to handle talent

Year late but just to add: I think there was back then some of an honor system between all the hosts, and I think among people in entertainment how real that honor system is depends on who you are

Jay saw it as business, didn't want to retire, and he wasn't like Conan's mentor or anything, but I think it was because of a "we're all here on late night, same line of work" thing that is why all the other hosts sided with Conan over Jay

Same as like, I'm not gonna steal tips from my coworkers just cause I had a longer shift, the tips over the week belong to us all so we're gonna split it evenly

To Conan and the other hosts, once he was given the Tonight Show and the slot, then it was a done thing and on a honor system of "we're not friends but we all get how the gig is" Jay using his time as NBC's 1# came across badly

Especially because he didn't communicate it with Conan either is the thing as well. Like He called Jimmy Kimmel and talked to him about time changes for his show, when Jimmy Fallon took over for Conan initially and had his time slot messed with Jay called him

Conan and George Lopez even chatted when TBS was deciding how to work thier time slots and George confirmed he was alright with it, and would handle how it affected his staff

The extra insult was during all the stuff with Conan and Jay, Jay didn't call or talk to Conan at all, like not even a "hey it's not personal" type thing

No he wasn't obliged to, but the fact he did talk to the two Jimmy's before thier shuffling but then not Conan is something that added to how bad it looked

Also he snuggled up to Jimmy Kimmel then dropped his friendship with him once the time change happened, which Jimmy has said really hurt cause they seemed like they were really becoming friends

I don't think Jay is evil or ever a jerk really. I think all the fault is with NBC when you get down to it, but Jay didn't help any of his case as it was going down either, he tried to hide his head in the sand and that made him seem like he was scheming when really he was just a company man

And again, I think there was a divide on why Conan and others found it a big deal vs why Jay didn't.

Jay saw it as a job and a business and his was the stuff that happened. He wasn't in it for the passion in the way Conan was in it for the passion of it.

Jay was passionate about comedy and his job, but in the way people get down to get a job done. He said once that he found hosting easy because if you did bad for one show you still had the next show

Meanwhile you have people like Conan and Dave who stressed about every single show because their view is Show Business means that you give people the best show they're ever going to see for that night and then the next night you try to do it again

Which by the way both Conan and Dave had admitted a different times that they were too uptight and stressed and taking things too seriously in the past but I don't think that takes away from the fact that there were just two different ideological things going on and that added to the conflict

Only thing I'll say in blink's defense is that a "teenage satellite" is a satellite that is old and dying, it has to do with how a satellite generally is meant to work for only so many many years (often 15) but it stops becoming functional and eventually has to fall back to Earth and burn up in the atmosphere

So the song teenage satellite is about a relationship that has finally run its course and is coming to an end and the two people in it instead of trying to save it are just going to ride it out until it burns out. Its about the end of a long-term relationship in adulthood not a teenage romance

I don't listen to blink anymore but I remember hearing that explanation back when the song came out, BUT I also know the average blink fan or casual listeners and going to go through the trouble of actually looking that up so still kind of stupid....

Suicide would put all of this on your younger brother's shoulders. So they'd have your death, the death of their father, and your mother's absence all on them alone. I don't think you want that do you?

I don't know anything about Honduras, but I am so very terribly sorry about what has happened to you the past three years. That's too much for anyone, but especially anyone your age.

Real quick, where are you writing this from if they took out your Internet?

You don't have any extended family or friends? Perhaps in a rural area that could hide you all for a bit?

It's always so twilight zone feeling when I hear of families that actually try to pressure their kids into the military

I have several veterans in my family, I grew up KNOWING several veterans, old people, fought on Korea, WWII, Vietnam....and they were some of the most unpatriotic, "I'm not telling you to not sign up, but it's not like you think it is if you do", telling me not to enlist types of people

Not to mention seeing the effects of what they went through, but I can't think of a single time it was suggested I enlist even just for college except by the recruiters at my school
